Teppen edo- picky kid

Not saying that you shouldn't do it, but why is Disney different?
I guess in my mind, food is a big part of enjoying the vacation for us. We like to try various restaurants and most of the time we will pick places that please everyone. But if there’s someplace I really want to try, I’m not going to let a picky kid dictate that experience for everyone else. It’s not like we would spend the entire trip going to restaurants that he didn’t like.

Idk, maybe I’m in the wrong. He was 3 at the time. Now that he is a bit older at 7, I wouldn’t do it. He is old enough to understand he has to try something from the menu, even if it’s the just the bread basket and a side.

This is pretty much the answer. It's not al la carte dining, you are paying by the seat, so the OP will have to pay for a child meal at Teppan Edo, whether they eat it or not. Then feel free to bring in an outside dish, it's nothing that WDW restaurant employees haven't seen before. Maybe the child will like some teriyaki chicken or steak and rice (most kids do), but they have that outside food just in case.
Teppan Edo is not a prix fixe meal or character meal so does not require every patron to pay for a meal. It is not necessary to buy a kid's meal there for a child who will not eat it.

I took my picky autistic son here when he was 5 y/o. The chef was able to keep his meal simple, just hibachi chicken and steamed rice, we asked to skip the veggies for him and put the surplus on my plate. He ended up loving the chicken. Communicate your needs when you check-in and communicate with the chef before and during the cooking process, I found them to be flexible to our needs.

I will also say, one time when our kids were little, we were at WDW in the summer heat and we were all just done. Hot, tired, and starving. I sat down with the kids while my H waited in a very long QS line. When he finally came back to the table he had four adult meals and no kids meals. He hadn’t realized they messed the order up and he did not want to go back up there and wait longer, understandably. So we just put it in front of the kids and they ate without any complaints, lol. So we decided if we just exhausted everyone to the max everyday, maybe they won’t be so picky! (No, we did not really do it intentionally after that, for the record)

Let's call a spade a spade. We're talking about Disney options here, not scratch cooking. Their versions are junk, and that's what people are comfortable putting into their kids' mouths. At some point these kids are going to become obese, unhealthy teens, and by then it will likely be too late.
Wow, are you this rude in real life or does the Internet just give you courage

For those of you that answered kindly, thank you so much.

It’s clear some people never had their mama teach them manners, but I suppose that’s how the Internet goes. Bless their hearts.

Thanks again y’all

Love this reply. Everyone deserves kindness, and some people seem to be incapable of understanding situations outside of their own experience.

Our youngest son is autistic and it truly is impossible for him to eat food outside his comfort zone. He actually vomited just two days ago when he tried a bite of pasta in a lemony sauce at home (which we didn't force on him, he saw his older brothers eating and tried it but it was just too much for him--we always have something separate for him when we are eating a food he won't like). I'm sure the folks being rude in this thread would probably rather not be sitting at one of the communal tables at teppan edo next to him if he tried something new and threw up all over them.

We ate at teppan edo and they will prepare plain noodles in soy-based sauce with nothing else in them for him (no veggies, no meat), and plain white rice. Those are things he likes though so if you have a picky eater who won't eat those things, unfortunately it is probably not going to work out as they do not have "off menu" items for picky eaters. There are some places we just can't eat with him at WDW, but most places are good. Hope it works out for you.

To be clear, I wasn't saying you're wrong in bringing in food. Just curious as to thinking behind why it is okay at WDW but not elsewhere, that's all. Not wanting to skip a place just because of one picky kid, can happen anywhere.

For disclosure, I was a picky kid and my parents definitely didn't chose restaurants around me. I wasn't forced to eat what I didn't like (though my dad always offered a bite of his to try) and I might just eat salad and bread (I actually liked most vegetables and non-fish/seafood proteins, I just liked them plain) but we went where others wanted to go. I could follow up with more food when I got home or we could grab something on our way back to the hotel. There is the infamous trip to France when I was seven where I brought a jar of peanut butter and saltine crackers (though that was also because we were doing a lot of train travel and everyone else in my family seems to fall asleep the minute the train starts moving, but I don't and, from previous trips, knew I might want a snack while they slept).
