No you are not out of your mind. I have tent camped in December many times. It's usually pretty dry in December.

Temperatures can vary though. Sometimes I've been in shorts the whole trip, other years, I've had to bundle up.

Snakes are not a problem.

The partial hookup sites run about $47 per night in early December. Try checking into AAA rates for a 20% discount.

Search through the forums, there are all kinds of posts about tent camping here.

I can speak to the December part...

We've been at FW the first 2-3 weeks of Dec the last 3 years. We've had very little rain. Last year we had just one day of heavy rain in the morning, with the sun coming out in the afternoon. The rest of the time was dry.

Carol's right though - temps all over the map. 2006 & 2007 it was generally 70s to low 80s in the day, and 50s-60s at night.

Last year was wacky. First week of Dec. was pretty cool - high 60s-70s. Evenings were quite cool, and a couple of nights it got to 40 and a bit below.

2nd and 3rd weeks were much more "normal" with temps reaching as high as 80-ish and evenings 50-60s.

I just wanted to post a quick note about kids. We have a 14 month old and we just tent camped at FW earlier this month. The bathrooms are really nice and in the handicap showers there have a handheld shower sprayer, which made it nice to be able to wash up our daughter versus the regular shower.
And since you have stayed at FW before I'm sure you know about the playgrounds and they have a great new water slide and splash zone.
Have a great time!
