Tent Camping In August (Am I nuts?)

I am contemplating camping in a tent with my 7 yr old DS during the last week of August at FW. We were there last August in a cabin and I remember the heavy rains and high humidity. So, will it be unbearable in a tent or should I just go for it? The alternative is to stay in either an All Star or outside Disney. It will only be for two nights. Any advice would be welcomed.

We tent camped last August in the heavy rains and high humidity and it was fine. Had a fan in our tent, which kept us reasonably cool at night. It was fine and I would do it again without giving it a second thought.

Thanks for the input. I think for two nights I can put up with anything. Do all the sites have electricity? Also, how far away are the bathrooms and are they clean?

We did it. But we were well prepared. We set the tent up under an oversized canopy for extra shade and rain protection. We had a dinning canopy over the picnic table so we had a dry place to eat. We are from the south and have lived in central Florida for 19 years so we are as used to the heat as you can get. We had box fans for outside the tent and a 16" oscillating fan for in the tent. However, the only thing that made it not be miserable for sleeping was the 5000 Btu A/C I rigged up for the tent. It did not do much in the day but at night it was great and by morning we were fighting for cover. Otherwise I know I would not get much sleep and everything in the tent would feel wet. We have camped in summer with only fans in the tent. Air at 85 deg temps and 95% humidity just does not have much cooling power even at 50 mph. Kind of like being in one of the infomercial cookers with cyclonic cooking. But like you say its only 2 days.

Yes, most sites are very close to a comfort station and you will be delighted to know they are air-conditioned and cleaned very well everyday. If you should ever find one that is not there is a white house phone in front of the comfort station that you can call housekeeping and they will come and take care of any problems.

I could not do it! The longest night of my life was when we tent camped July 4 weekend at Gulf State Park/Gulf Shores Alabama.
High temps for that week were between 95-100, with about the same humidity. I swear we could HEAR ourself sweat at night, as we lay there praying for even a wisper of a hint of a breeze. All this while listening to the hum of the air conditioners on the rv's parked around us.

If you decide to go, you could always sleep in the bathrooms...at least they're air conditioned.;)

I think all of the sites have electricity, so bring an extension cord with you that is rated for the outdoors.

We were a short walk from our comfort station and there was more than one in our loop. Am happy to report that the comfort station was clean for the three days we were there. I did wear flip flops in the shower, so they aren't so spotless that you shouldn't take precautions, but they aren't disgusting either. Plenty of hot water and I only had to wait for a shower once.

There are two things I don't like about Florida...July/August. Hot and humid. My advice would be to bring a good fan and drink plenty of water. Good luck and have fun. FW is a blast regardless of how you camp.

We have reservations at FW for spring break and Christmas/New Years. Usually go several times a year. Maybe we'll go there in July/August and tough it out with ya:cool:
