TEN BUCKS A WEEK!

A few more things today...

8 cans chicken gravy
9 cans campbells soup (was supposed to be 10 but realized one was dented at checkout so left that one behind)
2 more boxes life cereal (we REALLY love Life cereal--I got two boxes of multigrain life for me)

Tomorrow I'm stocking up on two cases Kraft Dinner (12 pack) on at No Frills for $5.97 which is a savings of $10.52!!

Pasta and pasta sauce are also on sale for $0.97 each so I'll be getting at least a few of each of those. My red pasta sauce is completely gone and we are dangerously low on noodles, so the timing couldn't be better!

English muffins are also on for $1 a bag (6 pack) so at least 4 of those will be tossed into the freezer!

No Frills has a ground pork/beef blend on starting tomorrow for $2.75 a pound...so I'll see if my budget stretches to get us some of that. Would be great for meatballs especially.

And finally...the Superstore has whole chickens on sale for $1.77 a pound. I have one or two in the freezer already (going to try and do my monthly freezer inventory tomorrow) but I may get one or two more if the budget allows for it.
Thanks for the heads up. We need pasta and sauce, but not KD-still have a case, minus what we use tonight. We'll pick up some English muffins, too. And, it looks like a trip to RCSS is in order for a couple of chickens. I need to restock my green tea, and NF doesn't carry the big boxes.

Reading this I thought- wow they love the Life cereal! I've never actually tried it I don't think!

I usually wait until they go on for $2 a box and then get 10-12 boxes (or more) to last us for a bit but they haven't been on for that low in ages and we ran out months ago. Now the lowest I can find is $2.50 a box (454 g) so I cleaned out that store's tiny shelf (Shoppers). I went back today (same store) hoping they had restocked but alas...they had not. Apparently a 24 hour turnaround is not long enough.

Friday's shopping trip:

(I took pics with my phone but can't get them loaded to my laptop for some reason)

2 cases (12 boxes per case) KD
3 family size boxes of post cereal (alpha bits, shreddies, honeycomb)
8 (6's) english muffins
2 (8's) hot dog buns
2 (8's) hamburger buns
1 (18's) mini dinner rolls (these were on clearance for $1.50)
~6 lbs ground beef and pork (I split these into 3/4 lb portions)
2 whole chickens
1 jar butter chicken sauce
6 jars ragu pasta sauce
3 pkgs pasta (750 g bags=1.5 lbs each) spaghetti, rotini, penne

So this was a very big shop to take advantage of some really great sales.

My downstairs freezer is FULL! I could fit a little bit more into it but it's 9/10 of the way full. This makes me :goodvibes

I did an inventory after my big shopping trip:

2 pkgs hot dog buns
2 pkgs hamburger buns
10 pkgs english muffins
1 butter (NEED this to go on sale!)
naan
2 doz hot dogs
2 kg bag (4 lbs) crinkle cut fries
3 frozen pizzas (thin crust, 2 pepperoni, one margharita)
fudge bars (30 count)
2 bags homemade chicken stock
2 bags (9's) homemade twice baked potatoes
1 kg (2 lbs) thick cut bacon
3 hams (roughly 6 lbs each?)
2 turkeys (10 lbs each)
4 whole chickens
2 trays (2 lbs each) boneless, skinless chicken breasts
5 bags frozen broccoli
small box fish filets
800 g box (1.75 lbs?) chicken nuggets
800 g box (1.75 lbs?) chicken fingers
dinner rolls (18 small)
8 baggies ground pork and beef (3/4 lb each)
4 baggies x lean gd beef (half pound each)

So excited!!

I play a little game with myself that might make me a bit of a weirdo!

One thing I like to do to ensure that I am rotating my food properly is challenge myself to use up the food in the fridge freezer first. And I try to ensure that I completely clean it out each month (only metaphorically...I just ensure the ingredients are included on the meal plan) before refilling it with anything from downstairs.

That way I don't have something a little odd sitting in there for months on end until it becomes freezer burned and unusable and I get to clean, reorganize and rotate my freezers approx once a month!

Today, I pulled out a bag of tomatoes that I froze last month. I am going to make a chili with them in the crockpot tomorrow. It will use up the last of a bag of corn in there too.

I also freeze our bananas when they get too brown for eating so I can make banana bread with them. I haven't had the butter lately to spare for this baking endeavor, so I've got THIRTEEN bananas in there now! I need butter so I can whip up a huge batch of deliciousness.

I have two med freezer bags of cooked and sliced ham and a container of pork stew that I put away at the end of February. I'm giving the stew away to someone...I just haven't seem them in a couple of weeks!

I also have five or six creamsicles that no one in my house likes. We were given them ages ago (I keep them in the door so they keep getting missed) and they really need to go!

Most of the other things have been incorporated into the menu for the next two weeks. The ham has only been in there just over a week, so I've got time to ensure that it makes its way onto our meal plan for the second half of April.

Am I the only weirdo? Or does anyone else do something like this too?

I don't do anything like this (yet), but I LOVE this idea! I often end up with a container of soup or cilantro lime rice & beans getting lost in the back of the smaller freezer. Doing something like this will really help me find & use those things before they get freezer burned! Our housemate gets half of the fridge freezer & my husband & I use the other half, so I'll do this in our half of the fridge freezer.

I think that, once we return from our upcoming Disneyland trip, I'll aim to get our half of the freezer cycled through every month using this idea, with one exception: bananas. Like you, I freeze very ripe bananas (we use ours to make cheap & easy banana ice cream & smoothies), but aiming to use them all up within the month won't necessarily work for us. I mostly grocery shop either walking the mile each way to/from our natural foods store or taking the bus to our regular grocery store & walking the half mile home from the bus stop. I try to buy little to no delicate/easily bruised fruit on these trips and I stock up on bananas on one of the few times each quarter I can catch a ride with my husband or housemate. Sometimes our schedules don't mesh for 6 or 8 weeks or more, so I always try to keep a good solid stash in the freezer. I don't want us to run out, so I'll allow these to stay stockpiled in the freezer (but I will keep up my current system for them. I keep them in freezer ziplocks & I will keep dating the bags & will make sure they are used up within 6-8 weeks of the date).

Thank you for sharing this idea...I am totally excited to get started on this new system!

I totally do this!

We have a Big deep freeze, so things can (and DID) get lost! We are very very lucky that we get a lot of our meat from my inlaws- they have a farm and keep some animals for the family freezers- I just did a big organize last month as FIL got last years pigs and cows back- he has 2 big deep freezes but still needed to get some meat out so the very end of last years meat and some of this years meat arrived. This covers a couple of pork roasts, chops and ground pork, ground beef, stewing beef, steaks and couple beef roasts, some bacon (they keep most of the bacon- it's amazing!) and some breakfast sausage. I buy turkey/chickens/chicken parts, ribs, fish when on sale. I also freeze extra shepherds pie/lasagna/things like that.

Then there is frozen veg and frozen fruit- most given to us from various people's trees and gardens- this was my downfall last year- I recently picked up one those machines that turns frozen fruit etc into frozen yogurt/ice cream for like $4 on a facebook bidding page, so look forward to using the fruit up.
My problem was not keeping these things separate. Then there are bread products like wraps and english muffins...

My fridge freezer keeps things like frozen soup, chilli, veg, chocolate, ice cream- that sort of stuff.

Now that the deep freeze is actually organized, we haven't had anything go bad yet. :teeth:

wow they love the Life cereal

they would love the 13 hour cereal sales that happen at one of the stores near us does (about 2-3 times a year). not sure if it's a good price or not, but the 13 oz boxes of life run for about $1.89 (and less if you've got any coupons). I made the mistake of going in on a day it was held (we're not big cereal consumers so I didn't even realize it was going on) and was amazed at the amount that was being purchased.

Well, my shopping trip yesterday was a total fiasco! Apparently, No Frills had some download problem and none of the produce that was featured in their flyer was adjusted in their system...so everyone was charged the wrong price all morning.

It was a small shop for me...produce, cheese strings for the kids, conditioner and bar soap and then a couple of odds and ends (parchment paper, choc milk). I try really hard to watch as my stuff scans but at No Frills it's a bit tough to do. I had a really hard time doing it yesterday since I only had a few things (so she scanned them very quickly) and the guy in front of me took his sweet time tucking his change back into his wallet and moving out of the way.

I bagged up my stuff in a hurry (there was someone with a large purchase behind me) and moved out of the way to visually scan my receipt. I soon realized I was waaaaay overcharged for the grapes I bought. In Canada we are metric (kgs as opposed to lbs) so it is weighed and priced that way at checkout but the signage and the flyers are all Imperial prices and then has the Metric price in fine print. (So the grapes said $1.47 a pound and then written tiny was $3.28 a kg). I don't know why this is...it makes it really tough to catch mistakes as the checkout or be sure of them once you're looking at your receipt but anyway...

I went right to the service desk and got that adjusted. She just gave me cash back...they'd been open a little over an hour and I guess had been alerted to the fact that there was a scanning problem. So, I got the grapes for free. She was flustered, which made me flustered...not sure why and I forgot to double check the other produce items. So...it wasn't until I got home that I found that the bananas were wrong and the cucumbers were too!

DH was surprised (and a wee bit impatient) to find out I was going back to the store over the mistakes. He said it was a waste of time for thirty cents. I told him some of it should be free, so it would definitely be more than $0.30 (that was only the overcharge on the bananas anyway!)

I went back after my workout so it was around 11 am by this point. They had just fixed the problem but I went right up to the desk and explained and a different lady was there to assist me. She did a fancy refund on my card (and I had already made the payment before I found the mistake :scared: so that's going to be fun!) and I got the bananas and one of the three cucumbers I bought for free. My refund was $3.99 and the refund for the grapes was $7.50 (although the actual sale price should have been around $4) in cash, so it was a big fat mess for me.

I think I got it all squared away...although I'm still going to have overpaid my cc by $3.99...but WHAT a crazy morning!

On a happier note...we booked our Paris trip this week! party:

It was a few hundred more than I had managed to save up though, so to make up the difference I stole $400 from my savings account. I have to pay that back STAT, so I've cut my May grocery budget down to $200 and then I have $60 in rewards dollars.

It will cover the next 5 Fridays (Apr 29, May 6, 13, 20, 27) so it is going to be tight! But, my freezer is full...the pantry is well stocked and I took a few precautions this week in order to ensure we'd only need to buy milk, yogurt, eggs and produce (stuff I can't really stock up on...I call them-the basics) for those 5 weeks.

Precautions:

1. Life cereal was on sale at FreshCo last week for $1.97 a box...I've got 14 of them on my basement pantry shelves. I also used up the lone $5 in Walmart rewards dollars that I had on that credit card (I hardly shop there anymore, so I thought I'd use it up) to get two boxes of other flavours of cereal. So that should take us through at least three weeks and I'll watch for more sales to cover the rest of the month.

2. I had $85 in rewards at Shoppers Drug Mart. I used them up on Monday because there were some good things on sale last week. I got 3 gallons of milk, 2 dozen eggs, 3 large cans pea soup, butter, 2 frozen pizzas, 2 packages tortillas, honey, 2 frozen lasagnas and 2 boxes of wings. It practically killed me to do it...:rotfl2: $85 elsewhere would have gotten me so much more...but it is what it is. Anyway, that strategic shop helped to top up the freezer and will be helpful for dinners during May.

3. I also bought a 22 pound bag of flour so I can do some baking at home. I can make my own bread, buns, pancakes, waffles, pizza dough and pastries should the need arise. The honey from Shoppers was necessary for making homemade granola bars that the kids take to school in their lunches. I made two dozen of them yesterday so they are set for a couple of weeks...when they get low, I'll make more. I also stocked up yesterday on enough cheese strings to get them through the entire month.

4. DH's soda will be on sale Monday only for a good price, so I'll stock up for the month then.

5. I bought a bottle of syrup and one of ketchup so we should be good for a while.

6. I've got $100 in MISC money that can be accessed if absolutely necessary.

Basically, the only base not covered is butter. I have half a pound of butter in the fridge and that's it! I'm waiting for it to go on sale for $2.88 a pound (the lowest I can get around here) and then I'll stock up. I have access to other money, not included in the $200 should the sale happen during the next 5 weeks. In the meantime we are rationing, but if we need to buy a pound at a higher price...we will do it!

I generally spend about $35 weekly on the basics so I figure a budget of $40 a week will cover those things as well as a few extra bucks for anything we may run out of over the course of the month. My plan is to spend the $60 in rewards in $20 increments, so three weeks will see me buying stuff with $20 in rewards and the other $20 charged to my card. The other two weeks will see me straight up using the card. DH's soda will also be charged to the card. If I can keep to this plan, the $60 in rewards will be used up between Apr 29, May 6 and May 13, and about $80 of the cash should be gone by then too. If I only use $40 on my card for each of the final two weeks, I'll come in under budget...but I'll have $40 worth of wiggle room should I need to get something that would put me over the $40 a week budget (I have a suspicion that my dishwasher tabs will run out in two or three weeks and maybe our TP too).

Well, that was brutally long...but that's where I currently stand! I am still working on eating down the upstairs freezer. The bananas were all used but one (although I added two yesterday) and quite a bit has been cleared out over the last couple of weeks. I found a banana muffin recipe that called for oil instead of butter so I made 4 dozen of them and they worked great! I had a crazy busy week this week, so I let it slip a little bit but I'll get back to it on Monday and finish the job!!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Ugh. Huge dilemma. I have a very tiny budget for tomorrow and No Frills is have a Dollar sale.

:sad2:

I need to get 3 bags (gallons) milk for the week, which is $12.81 of my $30 allotment for tomorrow (spent some on produce today). I have to make the most of that $17 bucks and no matter what I do I can seem to shave the budget down without feeling deprived. :rotfl2:

Talk about first world problems!!

Whew! Almost a month since my last update...sorry about that.

As I reported, because we had to pay off the booking for the vacation, I was down to a bare bones budget for the month for food.

We survived and I still have a half full (maybe more) freezer with tons of storage still on the shelves.

I also went back to Friday shops last week. It's just easier and I like it and that's how it's going to be!

Anyway, this Friday is my first big shop in a while and I am chomping at the bit to get going. I am going to go back to the dedicated $10 food storage allotment because that worked really well, but I'm also going to stockpile certain items in larger quantities when possible.

For example,

I set aside $10 a week for fresh meat but when prices are good I often spend the full amount for the month to stock up when prices are low and toss all the "extras" in the freezer.

Skinless chicken breasts are on sale beginning Friday at No Frills for $2.47/lb. Pork loin is on sale at Food Basics beginning tomorrow for $1.44/lb (which I cut up for chops) and I am going to get more than $10 worth of these two items because these are good prices.

Eggs are on sale at Food basics for $1.99 a dozen, so I am going to buy a month's worth at that price and Jane's Pub style chicken fingers/nuggets are on there as well for $4.97 for an 800g box (a little less than 2 lbs).

I desperately need butter...so hopefully someone has that on soon but when they do, I'll stock up on that. I also need pasta pretty badly and I'm low on cereal also.

Anyway...after I've seen all the ads for the week, I'll pull my plan together and really get this thread going again!

sounds like a good plan.

my freezer is bursting at the seams-one of the local stores had a sale on a couple of items I couldn't resist last week. chicken leg/thigh quarters for 77 cents per pound, and racks of pork spareribs for 1.98 per pound. I grabbed 4 of the racks and just shy of 30 pounds of the chicken so thanks to the vacuum sealer we've now got 8 packages of ribs (half a rack each) and 18 packages of chicken (with 2 leg/thigh quarters each).

I think we are set for bbq season.

This thread is wonderful and y'all are motivating me to start stockpiling!! Our problem is a VERY serious lack of storage space. We do have a hall closet that we use a black shelf like the OP uses, for food storage and that's it for food storage space. So, I'm thinking of getting some large plastic containers that will fit under our beds, to store items there.

I also need some smaller containers on the shelf, as some of the boxes etc I use are so shallow I can't fit a lot in them. That will help a lot.

My grandmunchkins are SUPER picky. it makes meals difficult! My daughter and I are mostly vegetarian, so there's that too.

Final issue, the only freezer we have in in the sure by side frig/freezer, so it's difficult to buy in bulk ahead of time. So, if I can stock up ahead on non-perishables, at least ill be a tiny bit ahead.

Thank you for all the great tips!! StayhomeMom, I love your threads! They're so much fun!

Well thank you so much! Happy to inspire!

I'm still waiting on the No Frills ad so I can finalize my shopping list for the week, but it's going to be a doozy!

Today I went to Food Basics and got a 7 lb pork loin. It was just under $10. I decided against getting a second one when I realized I still had four whole chickens in the freezer that I hadn't remembered were down there. I still have a turkey or two as well as a couple of hams that I want to use up before I buy anything other than chicken breasts and ground beef. That's what happens when you focus on cleaning out the fridge freezer...most things in the chest freezer don't get used and you forget they are there!!

Anyway, I got that and a month's worth of english muffins, 2 month's worth of liquid laundry detergent, a month's worth of cereal as well as the Jane's chicken fingers/nuggets (I got one of each) that I mentioned in an earlier post.

Sales starting tomorrow:

RCSS (Real Canadian Superstore) has Delissio pizzas on sale for $2.98 each so I'm going to get 4 of them (they are thin crust, so that covers two meals for the whole fam), barilla pasta is on for $0.97 a package so I'll be getting four of those as well.

No Frills apparently has TP on sale, so a package of that will go in my cart, and of course the chicken breasts I mentioned...I've allocated $12 for that...should get me a tray or two depending on the size. I have to wait to see the flyer before I can decide anything else.

Sales starting Friday:

SDM (Shoppers Drug Mart) has the hubby's pop on sale $2.49 for a six pack of 710 ml (limit 4) and Lipton Sidekicks are on for $0.88 each (limit 4) so I'm getting the limit on each of those.

o.k.-what I did today was NOT what would be perceived as budget friendly short term, but I couldn't resist AND in the long run it will save us.

I think we can all agree beef prices are outrageous. I honestly haven't seen a decent steak selling for over a year lower than around $9.99 a pound so when one of our local national chains ran an ad that they were selling rib eyes for their club card members at $5.97 a pound I thought it had to be a misprint. these regularly go for $12.99 a pound!

no misprint-and apparently the meat department can't keep the display case stocked b/c so many people are snapping them up b/c I had to wait to get my supply while the butcher was packaging more.

so i ended up purchasing roughly 15 pounds of rib eyes which we will vacuum seal and freeze-total cost before discounts $197.45-after club member discount and additional club member offer of $7 off any purchases totaling over $70......................$83.75. :dancer::dancer: this is less than it would cost dh and i to go out for one rib eye steak dinner in our area-so we will effectively get 15 meals for the price of 1.

Cool! It's long term cost effective...which still counts. Although I felt the same way a couple of years ago when we bought our family zoo membership. I forked over $250 for the annual membership plus parking pass, which felt like anything BUT a deal, but averaged over the year it worked out to about $20 a month, which is a great deal for family entertainment.

I came in $10 under budget (woot!) and I even got a couple of things that weren't on my list. :cool1:

I managed to get two trays of chicken--which was 10 breasts total, so I was geeked about that. That's five meals because DS doesn't eat unbreaded chicken and DD and I share a portion as they are large chicken breasts.

I ended up getting two packages of the TP as it was such a great deal, and two lady speed stick deodorants...I had a coupon that made them $0.94 each, so that was awesome. I got grapes that were marked down (which my kids have already powered through half of) all at No Frills. I picked up some discounted monterey jack with jalapenos cheese slices, and DH acted like he'd just won the lottery. They were a decent price and it's nice to have a little luxury now and then. They will be great on our burgers tomorrow night and the rest can be used on my breakfast sandwiches. YUM!

I cut up the pork tenderloin today and got two roasts, a bag of stewing meat and 10 chops out of it. Easily 8 meals...maybe more.

I got everything on my list from RCSS as well as four cans of Heinz baked beans in various flavours. We will be having hot dogs and sausages on the BBQ a few times this summer, so those should be a nice addition to the bill of fare. Refried beans and baked beans are two things I have failed to make successfully. I get them to turn out all right, but they just don't quite taste like we prefer them and I'm tired of testing out recipes in search of a cheaper alternative to the canned stuff. I'm just going to buy the cans when I can get them on sale and eat the tasty beans we love.

Tomorrow I hit up SDM for the noodles and the pop and if I don't buy anything else there...I'll be $10 under for the week officially.

Just a flyer tip for you.. If you go to SmartCanucks and check their flyers forum, there are posters that get flyers early and scan them. Usually by Tuesday you can see NoFrills, Food Basics, RCSS and Shoppers Drug Mart.
