Has anyone traveled with a temporary license? We are heading down to the World in 18 days and DH just had to renew is license. In the state of NH, they now issue you a paper temporary licesnse until the new one is mailed to you. They told him it could take up to 60 days.

Has anyone ever had an issue with this and the TSA? or a Car Rental Agency?

TIA

You will have a problem with both. Airlines will not let you fly with a temp ID. I would call your airline and ask them if they would accept the expired plastic ID and the new paper ID. I haven't tried renting a car with a paper ID but I would do the same for them.

You shouldn't have to worry about it. I would take both the expired and new temp ID and show both together. Just be prepared for doing the extra search at security.

For the PP that said you are not allowed to fly with it - not so. We live in the United States of America It is still not illegal in this country to travel internally without documents - a passport law for domestic travel has not been passed yet. Ask anyone who has had an ID stolen, while on vacation. It does mean that you are flagged for additional searches. As long as you are aware of that, you are good.

I would definitely ask the airline what you can do to make things smoother.

The airline staff may give you issues. I flew last year 2 months before my license expired. I was stopped by the airline and told to make sure and get my license renewed. I was totally confused because it was still 2 months away. He explained that you WILL have problems at the airport if you have a paper ID and try to fly. So he suggested that since I fly frequently to update my license early so that I wouldn't have a paper ID before my old license expired. So while, yes, they will let you on the plane, it will be a hassle. And on a family vacation, I think we would all like to avoid the hassle ;)

IDK, i kind of disagree with the PP. I think you'll have a problem. you'll need to get in touch with the airline, ASAP.

BTW, i work in a bar, and if you came in with the temp and the paper i.d, you wouldnt be getting alcohol. We dont consider either to be valid i.d., i would assume the airlines would feel the same.

Thank you all.

I just called, and they said it is accepted. He just needs to have something else issued in his name with him. They said most travlers just show a credit card.

They said the expired licsense is actually not considered valid, but we will bring with us anyways. I'll just pray that it doesn't take the full 60 days to be issued and we get it sooner.
