Temporary full-time or stay part-time

Opinions needed - I currently work part-time (4 hours per day) at a decent job with minimal benefits, but good atmosphere. I have a degree in Communications and am not really using it in this job as Office Manager of a small non-profit organization. There are several full-time TEMPORARY jobs opening in my field (communications) due to local National Guard soldiers being deployed. These jobs would be twice the pay as I make now (due to higher wage and full-time status). I would get some great exposure to the communications world, make some new connections and be able to put money away. But, I would be out of a job as soon as the deployed soldiers return (which in my heart I would hope to be soon - for their families' sake). What would you do? Stay at the semi-stable (it is a non-profit) part-time job, or go for it and jump into the world of temporary full-time? My kids' schedules and an increase in daycare is a consideration, but so is my exposure to new skills and people that will help me continue my career.

I know this is a very complicated issue and it may be hard for people to offer opinions, but I'm just looking for some thoughts, or help, in making my decision.

Has anyone ever worked a full-time, temporary position and what happened?

Thanks for any thoughts!

This is a tough decision particularly in today's job market. I would ask myself what I would do once the temporary job was over with. How is your job market nowadays? Do you need the part-time income or could you go for a while without any income once the temporary job is done? Could you possibly search for a full-time job in your field and remain at the part-time job until you find something? The exposure to your field is nice but do consider whether you can handle it, financially and emotionally. I personally have trouble with the stress of job hunting!

Good luck with whatever you decide.

That is a tough one. Can you make a list of pros and cons between the two - listing your current situation and what may be the possible future results? Do you think this will be the only time you will get a chance to get this type of experience and exposure? If you stay with your current job, will you regret not taking the risk/chance? Or, if you take the FT temp job, will you regret the loss of a perm PT job that works with your current life situation?

Good luck!!

Wow!! A blast from the past! Hi, Cameo!! Haven't heard from you in ages! I have no advice but I just wanted to say hello!

So - I bet your little boy is really growing - yours was one of the first threads I responded to - plus Kathleen's. I remember when we started your baby poll, trying to guess when you would give birth!

Please don't be a stranger here!

To add:
the temp job could open up new contacts and networking opportunities for you that just aren't going to happen if you continue in your current job.
Instead of looking at it like you'd automatically "lose" the job once the guard came back, look at it like you would be doing such a terrific job that they wouldn't want to ask you to leave.

In reading your post, I get a sense that you just aren't satisfied with your current situation. I say go for it--you will be surprised at how new worlds open up for you.

Well, everyone's thoughts are exactly like all the emotions I've been rolling around in my head. What a difficult situation! I am not totally satisfied with the career aspects of my current position, but it does work nicely with the kids. How hard it is to be a super mom and career woman!!

Hi Pam - Yep, my North turned three in February. The years fly by, don't they? I don't come to the Community Board very much. I'm mostly a roamer, but I felt this problem needed some DIS opinions!

Thanks all!
