Why does it feel colder inside when it's colder outside?

I know that sounds dumb, but my inside temperature is constant. So why does an inside temperature of 64º feel warmer when it's 45º outside than when it's 5º outside?

Shouldn't 64º be 64º?

I'm not complaining... I love this weather. I just can't wrap my brain around why its like that.

The amount of humidity in the air changes. The colder it is, the less humidity there is.

The Temperature is only 64 at the thermostat. The rest of the house will have a temperature gradient from the outside temperature to the temperature at the thermostat.

This temperature gradient eventually lowers the temperature at the thermostat below the set-point (64) causing the heat to come on.

If it is warm outside, the temperature gradient is less and you will feel warmer.

You keep your inside temperature at 64!?! :scared1: Brrrrrrr! And people say I'm bad keeping it at 68!

Haha, yeah :)

Those explanations make sense. It just seemed weird to me!

My thoughts, and to add to it, a thermostat and efficient heater doesn't maintain 64 degrees, most have a range of +/- X number of degrees, where X can sometimes be modified by the user (ie. +/- 2 degrees from the set temperature). The larger the range, the less often the furnace or in summer months, the A/C will come on, the smaller the more often.

Hi, during winter my home is very cold but then you get out and no matter the temperatute, it's always warmer. It beacause a closed place accumulates cold like a fridge does. the same occurs with heat (greenhouse effect)

:confused3

Well, first of all, cold can't "accumulate", second of all...never mind, I think it's probably a lost cause. ;)

I was thinking of a temperature question the other day. It is/was 68 degrees in our house and usually I am far from warm. I can go to bed and use flannel sheets and not break a sweat. However, in the summer if the low temps are 68 at night it is often too warm to use more than a sheet. I am guessing the answer here has to do with the humidity?
