Tell us your hotel horror stories!

Emmyfaye-

It sounds like you were in Emporia, VA. We stayed there on our way back nome from WDW, and just couldn't do the last couple of hours because it was so late.
We made the mistake of staying at the Days Inn, and barely got any sleep. Between the kids running up and down the walkways outside our room and the beer-bashes in the parking lot, we vowed that as soon as we could afford something better, we'd stay somewhere else.
We've since upgraded to the Holiday Inn Express/Select hotels. And they don't cost that much more than the miserable Days Inn room that we stayed in, way back when.

Oh I thought of another one. It's not a horror story, but it made me think I had lost my mind.

I was sent to Toronto for a week and was put up in a major hotel chain, I think it was Fairmont, but not sure. I had never been to Canada before, so everything was strange, but still exciting.

After getting a little lost I finally found it. The hotel was about 25 stories and had the chain name in this huge sign on the top of the building. You COULD NOT miss it. I checked in on a Sunday night and the room was really nice. The hotel had an indoor pool with a bridge over it and a nice slide into the pool. The hotel name was on everything - the shampoo, the towels, the bathrobe, all over the lobby, the elevator.

I had to be at my store at 6:45 am, so I got up early, had room service breakfast and drove to the store. I left the store about 5 pm and went to dinner. It was getting dusk when I drove back to the hotel.

I could not find it. I was so confused, I KNOW it was on "this" street. After driving past it about 5 times, I realized that the sign on top of the hotel was gone and that they had a crane up there. I figured they were getting a new sign.

When I walked in the lobby, I couldn't put my finger on it, but something looked different. I got on the elevator and I saw something about Delta.

When I opened the door to my room, I thought I had stepped into the Twilight Zone.

The whole room was different. Different bedspreads, different shower curtains, etc. The word Delta was all over everything - the towels, the shampoo, the bathrobe, the menus.

I thought I was losing my mind LOL. I called the front desk. Apparently Delta had bought out this chain, the buyout was effective midnight the night before, and they had 24 hours to change the WHOLE HOTEL over to the Delta name.

LOL.

One time on a baseball trip we found a booger on the shower curtain in the bathroom in a Comfort Suites...

DW, In laws and I went to a wedding in Michigan somewhere and had reserved two rooms at a Knights Inn, one that was on the 'reserved' list for the wedding. It was just a comedy of errors - A/C not working, toilet not working, bugs on sheets, rednecks in the parking lot having drinking parties, musty smelling rooms. You name it, everything that is listed on this thread we probably had wrong/go bad. the Inlaws moved 3 times and we moved twice. It was crazy.

When I was a kid (maybe 10), we were doing some traveling on vacation and were going to Mackinaw island somewhere. Dad had reserved us a house at the miltary base there somewhere and we drove around for what seems liked hours until we found it. The MPs at the front gate gave us the keys and we went to the house. The front screen door was locked, it was like 2am, and we were all tired. Dad broke in, and as we're dragging our stuff in, some other people came downstairs from the bedrooms. The MPs gave us keys to a house that was already occupied. That was a lot of fun. We probably scared the bejezus outta those poor people.

jipsy: You reminded me of my dad's hotel experience. He travels on business. He checked in one afternoon and is given room 412. He went to his room, spread out his stuff, worked on some sales quotes and went to dinner. When he returned, his room was completely empty--no work, no briefcase, no travel bag--NOTHING. He called the front desk, they called the police, combed the dumpsters, everything. Finally, dad went to bed, thoroughly ticked off (he had even called me to see if he could sue the hotel for their lack of @#$% security) planning on heading home the next day to replace all his items. The next morning, very early, he got a call from the front desk--we found your stuff. Dad was thrilled--"where did you find it" "In Room 312, directly below you" He had apparently gotten off the elevator on the wrong floor and somehow gotten into this room, then when he returned he went to the room he was actually checked in to--Boy was his face red!

On a drive south to Florida, we once stopped - late in the evening and without reservations - at a motel in a place called Emporia (I can't remember which state - and I think it was a Day's Inn) which had clean bedding but an atmosphere reminiscent of the Bate's Motel. EEEEK!! A quick couple of hours uneasy sleep and we were back on the road again, with a mental note never to stay at any place in Emporia, wherever it is.

Emporia, VA is off of the interstate. :)

I think we stayed at that Day's Inn in Emporia:eek:

We once made reservations for a Days Inn in Colorado Springs. Now Colorado Springs is a nice town and we didn't realize there were some not-so-nice areas. We checked in and there were some seedy looking characters in the "office" area, and everyone stopped talking and looked at us kind of funny. DS was about 2 years old, myself and DH. We went to the room and it just gave us the heebie jeebies for some reason, not necessarily dirty but very run down. We set out bags down and walked out to the pool area, the water was so grey it was almost black, and we noticed a few more creepy looking characters. We picked up the phone and called another hotel... a more upscale chain... they had a brand new hotel maybe two miles away but in a much nicer area, they had rooms available and we took it. Went to the office to check out and they acted like they were expecting us... to leave that is....

I think we did not meet the profile for their "normal" clientel... when we checked in at the new hotel we told them what happened and the manager was so nice, he told us we defn. made a smart move to get away from that place, then gave us a discount on our room to match the rate we had reserved the dump for.

Last August, I went to see Off Kilter play (surprise! :) ) in Euclid, Ohio. The hotel I stayed in used to be owned by Sheraton, and they eventually sold it to Days Inn, and after staying there that weekend, I can understand why.

The lobby was nice, and check-in was smooth. We had a one-bedroom suite (it was my mom and I, and being two women, we liked having two bathrooms). The problems started when we went to bed the first night. Firstly, my mom noticed a spring sticking out of the side of the bed mattress. Not a huge deal, just a minor problem. Secondly, the pull-out sofa I was sleeping on was the most uncomfortable thing I've ever slept on in my life; I was afraid the thing was going to fold up on me in the middle of the night. Again, an uncomfortable bed is not the worst thing in the world, so the stay continued.

Our first night there, we had went to dinner at a Pizza Hut. We brought the leftovers back to the room, and stored them in the mini bar/fridge (it was a half and half set up). The next day, when we went to get the leftover pizza for lunch, it was frozen solid. The cooling system in the minibar/fridge was way too cold, so everything in there was frozen. So much for leftover pizza! We were going to stop at the local supermarket and put some things in the fridge for the weekend, but that plan changed quickly.

Finally, and the worst part of the weekend, happened the night before we checked out. Mom and I were going through the room, double checking that we weren't leaving anything behind in the room. She opened the top drawer in the dresser (it was a small drawer, I'm assuming to be used to store jewelry, etc.), and what does she find? A smoked joint. We debated what to do; if we reported it, we were afraid that we'd be charged with drug possession, when the drugs weren't ours. But, if we didn't report it, and the next person rents the room discovers it, we might be charged with it anyhow, since we were the last people in the room. We finally called the front desk, and they sent somebody up. He looked at it, got a paper towel, picked it up, and flushed it down the toilet. We all laughed about it, we tipped him, and he left.

Needless to say, we won't be staying there again!

I just thought of another one, how could I forget.

I went to a meeting where about 15 co-workers from all over the country met. It was a nice hotel, but it was odd, ALL of my co-workers where in "tower" rooms, but somehow I got assigned a room in the older wing.. and older part of the hotel, more run down but decent.

I checked in late (probably why I got the bad room) and went to bed. When I got up in the morning, I sort of toss and turn alot at night, and the blankets where half off the bed. When I went to pull the blankets up off the floor, there was a NIGHTGOWN (not MINE) that was tucked in near the foot of the bed. Ewwww... I slept with somebody else's nightgown! I can only hope it somehow went through the laundry... but realistically, I think they hadn't changed the sheets... ewwwww....

Now I remember why I blocked it out before

This subject is right up my alley!
I stayed at a hotel in Detroit where the air conditioner temperature control knob was missing. It was so cold in the room that there was frost on the window. Called the front desk to have some one repair it, was told to get on my hands and knees to look for that "dad burned knob". They said they could not replace the knob so I asked if they had a pair of plyers to adjust the temperature. They told me that the maintenance guy had taken them home and never brought them back. Both of the floor lamps in the room were leaning to the right and the door would not lock. The bathroom was filthy-used towels and washcloths. Needless to say, I left that hotel ASAP.

Checked into my room at a hotel in Minneapolis-opened the door and was met with a rush of water-pipe burst in the bathroom.

My friend and I stayed at a hotel in Nashville. There was one regular bed and a Murphy bed. My friend weighs about 95 pounds and in the middle of the night the Murphy bed attempted to close while she was in it!

These posts have me LOL!!!! Since the news is on, I needed a laugh.

Pigeon Forge, The Clapton Inn or something like that, but we called it The Crapton Inn. No where else to stay, everything was booked. This was 10 or so years ago. Beds were as hard as a rock. Me and my neice went to the pool, where a bunch of toothless hillbillies grinned at us. We were so scared we booked it outta there.

catsrule, maybe those hillbillies were hired by the motel as an advertising ploy  BTW did you go to Hillbilly Golf when you were there?

ROTFLMAO!!

This thread cracks me up!

Mine is sort of mellow - my company would send its field reps up to MA for training at the company headquarters -I never minded traveling and staying in the hotels by myself, normally I felt safe and secure being a woman alone.

I checked in a Courtyard by Marriott - what a disaster! The door would not close - never mind lock. The window (I was on the ground floor) wouldn't lock and anyone could slide the screen out to get it, and the hair dryer on the wall was CRACKLING! It was shorting out! Needless to say I got a new room! And I was very vocal about it.

I have another funny hotel story... not a horror story.

A couple of years ago, I had to go to a conference in Atlanta that was at the Westin Peachtree. I was put on the 44th floor. I couldn't wait to get to my room to see the view. I'm not afraid of heights, but elevators give me the heebie jeebies. So, I get onto the elevator and I'm clutching the side walls. At the 16th floor, a maintenance man gets on and presses 30. When the door opened on the 30th floor, I asked him if he really needed to get off, or if he could ride to 44 with me. He rolled his eyes and chuckled. When we got to 44, he asked if I wanted him to walk me to my room. I told him that wouldn't be necessary. I wasn't afraid now that I was there, but I asked him if I could call him to ride down with me later.

Falling in the ToT really ruined elevators for me in a big way.

Last year my family and I took a trip to the Indiana Dunes. We had reservations at the Merriville Star something. It is suppose to be really great with headline entertainment. Well the pool was wonderful and DH and kids were having a wonderful time in it. I was reading in the room when I heard a loud crash. It was raw sewage coming up out of our bathroom sink and it caused the ceiling to fall through from above. I called the frond desk and after 15 mins they sent a maintance man up who took one look and the room and said you need to clear out of here NOW. Needless to say I was packed and in the hallway in 5 min. He met me with a key to a different room. We got to the new room that was so dirty and dusty even the kids complained, and there was a large hole in the bathroom wall. I tried to get another room but was told none were available. When I checked out the next morning I complained to the manager who comped me the night, but I would never stay again.

Our horror story was 11 years ago, My first and last trip off site. I and a girlfriend shared a room and took her 5 year ds and my 5 year old dd. I was an Howard Johnson's on Arlo Bronson Highway. Looked fine clean in the room good location.Put us on the second floor, no balcony, but a cat walk with a railing across front of the building, The room had a very flowery smell like the carpet refresher smell. The next am, we had ants, every where, all over the toothpaste, in our toothbrushes, Called to management, that feigned shock said they would take care of it toot sweet. Came back to room had a really heavy flower smell. Next morning more ants. called again. assured again. We are now on our 3rd day, we get ready to leave room, My friend goes out the door and is at the doorway with both 5 year olds on balconey. I say oh wait I forgot my whatever it was, and go back in the door, as I come back out I get the impression that my 5 year old dd is on the outside rail of the balconey. I do not want to yell and startle her, so I sprint ot the door and see she is indeed on the outside of the rail 2 stories up. I reach through the bnars and pull her into the rail by her ponytail. total elapsed time about a minute, My friend suddenly realizes and we all start freaking out. She had leaned on the rail and it was wide enough for her to slip through the rungs. Went to epcot, walked around for about and hour and called my dad who is an attorney and started crying. Got back to the room and there was a message that we were to come to the office we were being moved to another property. Packed the car went to the office, to turn in keys and get info. One more thing I forgot to mention, found a can of ant spray under sink, that smelled like flowers, so my friend took it to the office at this point it was 3-3o lots of people checking in, she handed in the keys, and very loudly said to the manager.HERE IS YOUR ANT SPRAY. turned around and said to about 50 people. IF YOUR ROOM SMELLS LIKE FLOWERS WATCH OUT IT IS ANT SPRAY< START RUNNING>. we were moved to another Hotel, comped the room for the rest of the week, given flowers, a gift basket of snacks, and free food in the hotel restaurant. Well thats an even trade for almost killing my kid isn't it? Long story short I called the building inspector in Kissamee, Armed with the to code specs for elevated walkways, and it seems this was not up to code as it had been grandfathered in under the old code. That translates to Tough on you, the consumer. Never again offsite.
