Doctor put me on a medication primarily used for lower blodd pressure (Atenolol) for my migraines. I tend to get them a couple times a week, directly over my sinuses. He wants me to try this for 30 days. I would love some more information. I also tend to have palpatations and he said this medicine might make those go away :cloud9:

I take Atenelol for heart palpiations. Have taken it for years and no side effects that I know of. My Dr told me it should help with my migraines...I don't think it ever has.
I don't know much else about it to tell you. ;)

I hope things clear up for you. Migraines are the worst! IMO

I was spacey when I tried them for migraines. I also had an allergic reaction. I know my dad (an internist) thought they were one of the best drugs out there, though.

I took a beta blocker for migraine prevention. I'm not sure how much it helped since I had to go off of it--it made my low blood pressure too low. I was also very lightheaded.

My migraines are now worse than they've ever been and are driving me nuts--I've had one every day for the last week. I really just want to crawl in a hole, but my family might notice that I'm gone.

Awww! T&B I can't imagine every day! I get them 4 or 5 times a month, with a 2 dayer around "that" time. I surely hope it goes away soon!

I take the med for BP control......but my sister was taking one type for migrane control and it actually worked like a dream. She was very very sick with her migranes and this was a miracle.

I have been taking Atenolol for about 2 years for PVC (heart palpitations). I tried several different Beta Blockers that didn't work for me before the Dr. suggested the Atenolol. It has been a real life saver for me. My palpitations were so bad, I could barely function. Now I'm almost normal! The doctor told me that Atenolol is a drug that has been around for a very long time, it has very few side effects, and it's very cheap. The only problem with it, is if you have low blood pressure, then you can't have too high of a dosage or else your blood pressure drops too low. Overall, though, Atenolol is a great multi-purpose drug.

Good luck!

I wish you good luck and I hope it helps. :goodvibes

I'm not a candidate for shots, so tried many meds for years with my migraines, as I suffered with the 3 dayers w/vomiting. A few yrs ago my dr experimented by prescribing Atenolol. I take a half of the lowest dose daily as a preventive. I cannot begin to tell you what a miracle it has preformed! It has changed my life headache wise!!

Amanda. I have been taking Atenolol for quite a number of
years now. Took them for racing heart, it corrected this
and didn't realize but it also helped with my migraines.

Don't worry about side effects, it is a miracle pill. Hope
this helps. Shirley :sunny:

I have been on Tenormin (Atenolol) for about 7 years. I had borderline hypertension for many years and was having 2 migranes a month that were totally incapacitating, lasting 18 hours and leaving me feeling hungover. Once I started on the Tenormin my migranes completely disappeared. In the past couple of years I have had 2 or 3 headaches that had characteristics of my old migranes but weren't nearly as severe.

My blood pressure runs around 60 over 100 or so. My pulse is slow, around 50. I have not had any side effects from it other than on very hot days when I work outside, bend over, and stand up I tend to get lightheaded. Then I know it's too hot to work! They couldn't pry this drug out of my hands!
HTH, Amy

Thanks for all the great info. The doctors always thought these headaches were my sinuses swelling. This is the first time they have treated them as migraines. Any warnings? Can I still workout as normal? It sounds great, but I am still wondering what to worry about :rotfl:

I have been taking Atenolol for 3 years now.I was put on it for my BP.. I also get migraines..I was at the point that I was getting them 3 times a month. Now I get none...Unless I go without caffeine for a while

DD takes Atenolol and does not have any problems (she doesn't take it for migraines.) When she first started taking it she was really tired but that went away pretty quick. Her pediatric cardiologist assured us that it is a very safe medication and he says there are very few side effects. She is on a lot of other medications for other problems and this is the only one she has not had any problems with. I hope it works for you.

Beta Blockers will aggravate psoriasis. My physician put me on it several years ago in the winter and when spring came, no improvement in my psoriasis. It didn't take long to do a search to find out why. Another SE that I didn't care for was the "calming", almost lethargic feeling I had when taking Atenolol. I remember rushing through the mall, seeing a bench and feeling I could just lie down on it and go to sleep without regard to who walked by! He switched me to an Ace inhibitor but I found the little dry cough annoying. So far, I am doing fine on HCTZ.

I was on it for a year. migraines everyday, so they got worse. also I found out that if you have asthmsa you should not be on this one! can make it worse. so they just switched me. still have migraines thou,
it also gave me worse palpataions. I could not stand being on it.

I was on inderal for a few years for migraine suppression. It worked for quite awhile and then just didn't work as well as it used to. My neurologist switched me to neurontin. Bad choice. It didn't work at all. Now I am on topamax. It has been a great thing for me.
If you need migraine suppression you might want to try it.
It has sure given me my life back. Used to have migraines at least 2-3 times a week. Now it is less than once a month.... :cool1:
