Last year we ended up banking about * points (odd amount that we just couldn't use.) We will not be using any of our Disney points this year and obviously we have to do something with those banked points that we will ultimately "lose" in (date).

I'm a real idiot when it comes to the whole renting of points scenario and I trust NO ONE. (This was recently reinforced when my ATM card number was stolen and someone ended up buying $3,000 in merchandise in less than 24 hours.) I know, I know. Thousands of people buy, rent and trade points all the time with no problems. You just have to understand my remarkable track record with "Murphy's Law" when it comes to these type of things.

So, what do I do with those points:
A. Try to "rent" them If so, please explain how that can be done SAFELY and with minimum hassle.
B. Just let them die (it's not worth the hassle and "risk" of not actually getting your money for them.)
C. Other option, please explain

Sorry to be such a jaded, clueless wonder about this stuff. My thanks, in advance, for anyone who is patient enough to deal with my ignorance and paranoia in this matter.

Happy New Year!

There are risks with renting, but if you stick with another DVC member who has a long history on these boards that is about as safe as it gets. You need to post on the rent trade board if you want to do this.

Lots of poeple "fill out" a stay with a few extra points.

There's always Daddio's to rent for you, which I've never used but might consider ...

If you transfer the points to another member there's no risk involved, as whatever they do with the points at that time is under their membership, just get the money first; that I've done successfully. And somebody might need a small amount of points to finish off a reservation they have planned.

Another option is that rather than letting them expire you could always give them to friends or family that might be heading to WDW/DLR/wherever HHI/Vero Beach are, since that could get somebody a couple of nights in a studio or 1 night in a 1 bedroom to add on to whatever accommodations they already have.

I think we may be related, I do not think I would ever have the courage to rent our points ( if we ever found ourselves in a situation where we actually had surplus points instead of being in our perpetual state of borrowing :rotfl2: ). Unfortunately since the points are banked you cannot transfer them to another DVC member so renting seems to be your only option unless you can find a family member or friend who'd maybe like a studio for 3 nights or so. Only other option that may be possible (you'd have to check the member site or planner or MS for specifics on this) would be to use those with a RCI "days" properties that is a reasonable driving distance from your home.

Good luck :goodvibes

I would suggest you go to the Rent/Trade board and try to transfer the points to another DVC member. That way you will get something for them. I have do a couple of transfers with no problems at all.

What we did with points we could not use or bank was contact Give the Kids the World
http://www.gktw.org/
and told them we would like to donate a 2 night stay for a volunteer of their choosing. We booked a weekend stay at OKW and we got a very nice Thank you letter from both the organization and the volunteer.

Usually best route to go, but OP's points are

not transferable because they have been banked. :sad1:

ETA : To poster Bobbiwoz, what a beautiful idea ! I was not aware of doing this with

Give Kids The World and am glad I learned about it in your post :-)

I do not rent points. I would do one of the following:
Give out a stay to a friend/relative as a birthday/anniversary/etc gift.
Book a stay in your name, go to some organization, and donate the stay. They can sell or auction it off. All they would have to tell you is the name of the person. Tell the organization that the dates can not be changed, the person they sell it to will have to take the dates or loose it and you can only change the name once.
Good luck.

I think Bobbi's idea sounds great! And if I'm not mistaken, the risk would be for the renter, not you.

I'm pretty sure the OP has banked points, and you can't transfer banked or borrowed points.

From what I can tell from Daddios, if you have nearly a year before they expire, there's a good chance of renting them out through him.

Just a note: Merged duplicate threads since both had replies.

Outside of donating them to GKTW, you might see if friends, family or co-workers would like a WDW vacation. 30 points could get 3 week nights in an OKW studio in Adventure or Choice season, enough to nicely extend a planned trip for someone. That way you'd be dealing with someone you know, rather than a compete stranger.

You can NOT transfer banked points. The rule is that transfered points can be banked, but banked points can't be transfered.

Maybe you could donate them. Does anybody know if Disney has a "Make a Wish" donation site?

After 14 years of owning DVC, we had extra, expiring points for the first time this year.

I just booked a 3 night vacation for a dear friend at AKL. He's thrilled!

What about the Dave's DVC rentals? (Am I remembering that correctly?) He seems to have a reliable business, and he posts on here all the time. That's what I would do.

Rent or transfer or book a trip for a friend or family but dont let them expire.

We have four left over that are due to expire Jan 31st....But really, who would really want the four points? AM I crazy to let them expire?

I wouldn't worry about 4 points, of course it would have been better to have used or banked them. But you really can't rent them, as no unit requres only 4 points. Your only option would have been a transfer, but I'd transfer them to a friend's account for free rather than try to do anything else with them.

Bobbi, what a wonderful idea for giving back. I am going to keep the info, in case I have a few extra points that I won't be using. Thanks
