We went to AKL for the first time two summers ago. It is a beautiful, grand resort. We experienced lots of Disney magic that trip. We had arrived to check in very early because we had just gotten off the
DCL. We were there at 9:15am or so. We thought we would check our bags and explore the hotel, or pop over to a park, but....... our room was ready! Not only was it ready, but we were upgraded for free without asking! We got a savannah view when we were going to be happy with a standard view. (after the cruise we weren't about to splurge on a view)
We found the lobby to be impressive. The halls, or trails as they are called had lookout windows every 30 or so feet to see animals and a glass enclosed display with different African artwork inside. Lots of nooks and crannies near the lobby to sit and talk in. The smells from Boma were enticing. We ate there and at the little food court-type place near the pool called the Mara. The food was very good. We didn't go to Jiko's.
Our room was smaller than the BWI (our favorite) but it was decorated beautifully and seeing the animals outside your balcony was incredible. The kids were at the window as soon as they woke up to see who else was awake out there!
We enjoyed the African storyteller at the fireplace nightly, and we did the tour of the Boma where we got to sample the food! Yum!
Overall, it is a beautiful, worthwhile resort to visit. We had no transportation problems. In fact, I think the fact that AKL does not share their bus with any other resort makes the trips to the parks faster than from other resorts that are a little closer to the parks. It is a deluxe resort, but due to the fact that you can't walk into a park like at the Epcot resorts or take a tram or boat, coupled with the smaller room size is why this deluxe is priced lower.
Hope you have a great time on your stay at AKL. Pixie dust to you so you get some Disney magic too!
