Interested in this tour but over half the time is travel.....what was your experience and your thoughts?? I also see where the price went up, so its very expensive. Just want to be sure before I settle on it.

I would do it again in a heartbeat. BUT....the getting there on the Ferry can be a bit unsettling if the seas are rough. It is a very long day, but I still would go back.

It's very good, it starts with a boats trip over to the mainland a coach on freeways to a Tulum, we had a break en route and they gave us a subway troll and drink, then in the ruins.

Guided tour of the large grounds very impressive, it's hot they gave us umbrellas for shade, we had free time to go down to the beach.

Then a return,

It's very good.

Thank you for the replies! What time was your departure? Return time? We have first dinning rotation. Just wondering how close to dinner you return since its such a long excursion. How much time did you get to swim at the Tulum beach after the tour?

It was early, meet time was just before port arrival time to get straight off onto the tenders to the mainland return by 5pm.

Not a lot of swim time circa 45 mins only.

We always are on main dinner and we were back in good time.

For those of you that went on it, how do you think it would be with children? I am considering this on our next trip to Cozumel. It isn't until April 2015, so my children will be quite a bit older by then. 13,12,7 & 7. Were their other children on the trips you went on? Thanks.

We just did it at Thanksgiving with 15 & 6 yr old. Very informative tour of the ruins. The 6 yr old was starting to get restless, but that happens daily :rotfl: Never felt rushed and the kids swam after guided tour ended, had plenty of time to shop at the little village and was still done before bus loaded back up. Can't give you "times", as we were on vacation and didn't wear watches :cool1: but I'm sure we were back well before first dinner seating. We thought it was well worth the cost.

Enjoy your cruise!

Great age for them to go, we had lots of children on our tour bus.

I feel it might be boring for children. Its more of an adult thing I think. There's nothing to do except look at ruins. The sights are impressive, especially the part overlooking the water but once you've seen it there's nothing else to do. We went on an excursion (not with DCL) and the kids were all cranky and crying. It's really hot and sunny and there is nowhere to hide in the shade during the guided tour. Dress comfortably and take an umbrella or a big hat or something because it gets really unbearable. I wouldn't swim in the ocean either. It doesn't seem convenient. There's not much time and I don't recall seeing anywhere where you could change or rinse off afterwards. There's like a gift shop area when you walk in and there are bathrooms and stuff but I think that's pretty much it. It's been a while though so maybe I'm not remembering correctly. Maybe someone who has been recently can correct me if I'm wrong. In the end it's up to you and your family to decide what's comfortable and what isn't. Personally I don't think the long ride back to the boat would be much fun in damp sandy clothes but that's just me. :confused3 Only you can know for sure what your kids would or wouldn't enjoy. Like I said though, I would recommend the trip for adults. The ruins by the beach is one of the prettiest sights I've seen. I'm just not sure if children would appreciate it.

A little off topic, but does your cruise stop at Costa Maya? If it does stop at Costa Maya, have you considered the Mayan ruins there? Cozumel has quite a few great opportunities: anything from a day at the beach to the Secret River. Costa Maya seems to have less things to do than Cozumel. Costa Maya does have beach time, and it does have a nice Mayan ruins tour that my daughters, 12 and 14, enjoyed.

Here are a few photos of Chaccoben Ruins at Costa Maya (not at all a comprehensive look at the site) and a couple photos of the Secret River (Rio Secreto) in Cozumel.

Were you able to tour any of the inside part of the ruins

I don't know about Tulum, but I can say that, typically, Mayan ruins have very little "inside" at all. The pyramids are pretty solid structures, with perhaps a burial chamber buried deep inside, no access, or perhaps one to three small rooms towards the top. At least, that has been my experience at Chaccoben and at Caracol, in Belize

There are some Mayan pyramids that have inside chambers, but I think those are mostly accessible only to archaeologists. We did get to go into a couple of small rooms in ruins at Caracol.

No, you cannot go inside any of them. Forgot to mention, there is no place to change if you want to swim. You'll want to wear your swimwear under your clothing. There are bathrooms back at entrance, where you can get out of wet suits. No showers though.

My Father is 72 with a heart condition. He is still mobile but are there places to sit at the ruins if he gets tired from the walking and heat? If not, can we bring a folding stool? I think he would really like this.

there are places to stop and sit

the walk from the parking to the ruins is LONG. There is a tram to ease this long walk - for an up charge, If you go in the summer it is HOT. DW got nauseous from the heat. (and after all that heat the box lunch on the way back was a tuna sandwich . . . ugh)

This is a great thread/question.... the Mayan ruins is all dh wants to do so I needed to start looking into it. These are all great answers and I'm going to have to follow this thread to see the continuing answers....plus anything I can do to help pass the time till our cruise in Oct I'll do!!! :-)
