Tell me about the noise at the Poly

We are seriously considering buying at the Poly and the only thing I have read that concerns me is about the noise of the boats. We will mostly be staying standard view and from what I read problems are mostly reported in the Lake View rooms. Most reports that I have read are not real recent.

For those of you who own at the Poly... what is your experience with the boat noise?

Thanks for your help!

We stayed in a bungalow (close to the boat action) and I LOVED the boat horns. It was like ambient noise for me. I didn’t realize how nostalgic the boat horns made me feel until we stayed there. The boat horns are a Magic Kingdom noise to me. Didn’t bother my parents, husband or small children either. No sleep disrupted in our villa.

It does bother some people - it’s really a personal tolerance. I actually loved the boat horns :)

We stayed at Poly twice in 2019 (as recently as Nov). First time in Jan was first floor garden view at Moorea and don't recall noticing the noise at all. In Nov we were in Tokelau on the 3rd floor lake end of the building in the unit facing TTC. In that unit we did notice the boat horn more but to us it was still minimal and not at all bothersome. We were 2 adults so we weren't trying to sleep at 10pm, I guess for those with small children or if you were trying to get an early nights sleep on late park closing nights it could be an issue.

We don't own at the Poly but we stayed there (lake view) for the first time a couple of weeks ago. We loved the Poly!! We were quite close to the ferry boats and they did not disturb us at night. One night I was not feeling well and went to bed at 8:30. Never heard the ferry boats! The Electrical Water Pageant however.... that woke me up!

I have not had an issue with the boat noises but I have heard some complain.

I have more of an issue with the noise from room to room, for which Poly does have a reputation. Maybe its just been my luck, but I always thought it was worse than other hotels

If you plan to stay standard view then it's not really going to be an issue.

We've had the very end lakeview rooms next to the TTC Ferry dock and actually the boat noise did not bother any of us. It is going to vary person to person the tolerance for the different noises. The 7am leaf blower right outside our patio is what got me. However the grounds did look nice.

I don’t own there, but we stayed in a LV studio in Moorea. The boats were super loud at all hours. We went in the summer when the parks are open much longer. The horns went off early in the morning until late at night. We hated it and wouldn’t stay there again. You will definitely hear the boat horns in a LV studio. Whether or not that bothers you is a different matter entirely.

I know it would cost money, but I also recommend staying at Poly before you buy. Maybe the noise won’t bother you at all. Maybe it’s a deal breaker for you like it is for us. Only you can know that.

Didn't notice noise from other rooms at the Poly on either of our stays ......... now Boardwalk Villas is another story. Very loud, must have paper thin walls.

We're not the least bit bothered by the boat horns. They're just background noise and quite pleasant. As mentioned, if you're staying standard it's unlikely you'll even notice the horns. When we stay lake view, we always request third floor, east end (closest to the ferry).

If noise bothers you, make sure to book a standard view room. That's what I do since I can't sleep through the ferry horns and the early-morning beach rakes . A view overlooking the gardens is wonderful!

We stayed there one time. Stand view for 2 nights. We were in Tokelau and away from the water but it was still a very noisy resort. The heavy doors slam (neighbors) all hours. Kids run up and down hallways, also all hours. And anytime a neighbor's toilet flushes you can hear it loud and clear.

But the rooms are laid out really well. Love the 2 part bathroom so 2 peeps can be getting ready at same time. Love the theme. Beds are uncomfortable though. And the noisiness of the resort just makes it not be a fave of mine. However my twin DDs-21 really loved it and request it anytime they go (have them booked there in May).

I've stayed lake and standard view at Poly before. In both rooms, the boat horns can be heard. It is louder in the Lake View room.

In both cases, it was not loud enough to bother me, prevent me from falling asleep, or waking me up in the morning. I could understand if someone is a light sleeper, then the noise very likely could be bothersome. The boats definitely run from the early morning through late night.

If you think it might be bothersome, i'd recommend a white-noise app on your phone or packing a white-noise machine. A source of white-noise would definitely be enough to overcome the sound of the boat horns.

Just stayed 4 nights at Poly in Moorea in a SV studio. Didn’t hear noise at all.

There is not that much noise from the pools. If you stay in Tokelau next to the secondary pool it is not usually bothersome at all.

The ferry horns are heard most in Moorea, especially in the eastern half of the building and possibly on the North side which includes all of the lake view rooms at Poly. Staying at Pago Pago you are a bit farther from the horns though still fairly close. Tokelau is the DVC building that is farthest from the ferry horns. I think you would hardly notice them at all if you are on the western side of the building facing the secondary pool. Last time we stayed we were in the Eastern side of tokelau up close to the lake, which put us near the western corner of Moorea, and we heard the horns once in awhile but honestly it was not enough to bother anybody in our party or wake anybody from sleep and I even asked other members of the party several times, "Are you hearing ferry horns occasionally?" and many of them were saying that they were never hearing them at all. There were 14 people in our party including some babies and small children. Nobody was concerned with nose at all.

But, do be aware that the horns are Loud, and you will hear them most in Moorea

Our two Poly stays were in Moorea. Boat horns were not an issue.

Every resort has positives and negatives, I wouldn't let the noise from boat horns factor in much if at all.

If you think you'll love the Poly for the next 30+ (not sure when it expires, I'm out in 2042) years and it works for your family and your trips and your imagined trips, don't let the boat horns sway you.

We stayed in LV Moorea last September. My family can pretty much sleep through anything. At night time, it wasn't a problem. The problem comes when you have an hour before the alarm goes off and you wake to go to the bathroom. Trying to go back to sleep wasn't easy with the horns. :)

Thank you everyone for the wonderful responses. I do plan on staying there before we buy but since I cannot experience every room/location I wanted to get a wide variety of responses. This board is so great and has been super helpful.

You guys rock!
