My dd 13 has decided she really wants the iPod touch. I am clueless..it looks like there are two versions, one for $199 and one for $299.

Do you think the 8gb for $199 is good enough?

If we have wireless internet in our house, can she use it to access the internet?

Does it ever go on sale?

Thanks-I told you I was clueless!
:)

the touch is great. If she has a lot of CDs already, the 8gb one may not be enough: still it holds several thousand songs. But, with the any ipod now except the shuffle, you can also view video, which does eat up your storage.

She will be able to surf the internet at wi-fi spots and if you have a wireless network set up in your house.

Apple rarely goes on sale. You might find it 10-15 dollars cheaper during promotions on occasion (like Christmas, sometimes around graduation, or father's/mother's day). Target also occasionally offers it with a 15-20 dollar itune's gift card bundled. Finally, you could see if the apple site has a refurbished itouch. Those have been remade by apple and are really as good as new with a decent warranty and about a 25% reduction in price. (Currently, Apple has a 16gb refurbished Itouch for $199.00 http://store.apple.com/us/product/FB531?mco=MTM3NDY2NjY

With the new nanos, if they don't mind the wheel menu, you can get more memory for your buck. For example, you could get a 16gb nano for about the price of an 8gb touch. The nano still holds a ton of songs and videos, you just don't have the cool factor of the touch screen.

I'm sure other people can tell you more technical info...but I steal my dd13's ipod all the time for the fun little games. It's the gift that you keep on giving/buying to get all the apps, and oh yeah the music.

Depends on how much music she will store. Remember it should last her many years and she may get more into things.

Yes, although *I* have not been successful getting my iPod Touch or MAC laptop to have wireless access in my house. But I have a very old router and I think that is the problem.

No true sales but often Costco will have some type of "package" that gives you something else with it. The Apple Store will also sometimes have some sort of gift with it. I've also seen Target give a gift card back to you if you buy one.

Personally no I do not think the 8 gig is enough. You can spend about $80 more and get 4 times the memory and better hardware and features that are not included in the 8 gig which has not been updated at all.

This subject has been beat to death on the budget board let me link you to a few of the better threads, maybe they will help you out.

Also I started a thread for free apps that you can download now (some are only free for a limited time) to be ready, then DD can load the ones she likes later.

Thanks everyone for the replies! :)

Reading your responses I think we will try to get the 16gb. It does sound neat! Maybe she will let me borrow it...;)

Blue Fairy, I appreciate the link to the other posts. I guess I missed them because I wasn't thinking of getting the ipod touch at the time, kwim?

The list of the apps is also much appreciated! :thumbsup2

I love mine... BUT I will be taking it back for replacement for the third time this year.

My advice? Buy the warranty.

If yours goes in for service, you don't get "your" iTouch back... you get another refurb. I'm on my 2nd refurb, and it just "broke" again. It says it needs a "restore"... but the restore feature won't restore it.

Um you all do know you can delete and swap out songs on the Ipod right?

I personally have never felt that the need to have every single song ever made on my Ipod. Who has the time to listen to all that?

I have a classic 4GB video ipod. Its never completely filled. If I am going on a trip I go in and sway out songs or playlists or vids. Takes all of 10-20 minutes to do.

I say give her the smallerGB one and then give her Itunes cards.

Also as far as it going on sale....it has been rumored that Apple will be offering some type of discount on Black Friday...through their stores AND online. Just wait a few days to check it out.

Also on side note...DONT FORGET TO ROUTINELY BACK UP YOUR ITUNES LIBRARY. If your hard drive goes, you will lose your purchased songs and Itunes will not replace them.

The size should be something that she'll be able to live with for at least a few years. More than a couple of movies will eat up 8GB in a heartbeat, and that's not including music, apps, etc. Personally, I had a 16 GB Touch that I used at work (we were allowed to listen/watch movies while we worked...I always used movies that I had seen so many times I could just listen and enjoy them) and it drove me nuts to have to micromanage my library. Granted, my usage was far from typical, as I was using it 8+ hours a day, but still. I ended up getting a 32 GB iPhone when they were released this summer and love it. Of course, I now work from home so I can watch movies on the TV while I work, but such is life. :goodvibes
