Made our reservations at Teppan Edo. Can anyone tell me their experience there? Thanks

Hi
It is one of our "must go" to resturants. The food is great and the entetainment of the chef is almost always great. It does depend on your chef as to how entertaining he/she will be.
More specifically, what would you like to know?
If you are wondering if you made a good choice, imo, you did!:hippie:

I think it depends on your experience at Hibatchi restaurants. We have some great ones at home and we were not really impressed at Teppan Edo. The portions there were much smaller and it is quite expensive. The food is tasty, no complaints about taste. It's just that at our local Japanese places we leave stuffed and carrying leftovers. At TE we ate what we were served (except the giant pile of onions) and left ready to sample desserts at other countries.

If you have never tried it, it is worth a try I guess. However if you have experience at other Hibatchi restaurants you may be underwhelmed. Just MHO.

We enjoyed it. We've gone 2 or 3 times and the entertainment value definitely depends on the chef. The food is good, though, regardless.

If you want actual authentic Japanese Cuisine, you will be disappointed. the Japanese do not play with their food before eating it. the actual taste/ presentation is not Japanese at all, it's dumbed down for American palates.

if you want the cheesy show, it's perfectly fine and no better or worse than your local Hibachi place at home.

if you are looking for decently prepared food that you have a bit of control over in real time, you will be fine.

the sushi is better than your average US restaurant that serves it but of you have eaten at a sushi go round in Tokyo, prepare to dial down your expectations a smidge.

Okay so I am biased, but it is not my go to place if I need a fix while at WDW. I actually prefer the CS options.

Exactly how we felt about it!!

Actually that's by design. All teppanyaki restaurants serve western style Japanese food.

In Japan, Benihanas is called Benihanas of New York and is probably only there for the american tourists.

I tend to agree with earlier posts. Teppan Edo is decent food and fun show especially for kids but pales in comparison to almost all other Teppanyaki restaurants we've dined at around the country. Benihanas is a national chain and we find it far better. Near Downtown Disney is Kobes which is also excellent.

If you do not have a Teppanyaki style restaurant in your home town then Teppan Edo would be a good fun choice especially if you have young kids.

probably right. lord knows none of our Japanese friends would be caught dead in a benihana's. Dumb gai jin tourists have no idea what they are missing by skipping CoCo Curry or Mos Burger. or any all night beef bowl place.....

What gets me is that they won't serve fried rice because it not "Traditional Japanese". Well the whole teppanyaki concept is not traditional at all, the food style is only what 60 years old.

Thats like a blink of the eye for a culture that goes back over a 1,000 years. :thumbsup2

I guess they don't want to bring in another cuisine. Particularly another Asian culture.

for fried rice you need to go to Chinatown in Yokohama. preferably a street vendor. although there was this one hole in the wall place near Hinode-Cho station that served the BEST gyoza on the Kanto Plain. guy didn't speak a single word of American.

dammit but I miss Japan.... and DH PCSs out of Okinawa in 2 months so I can't even get my fix of CC lemon any more.

Hello there DisneyFor5!

Let me start off by saying two things ...

1. Regardless of what anyone says you must go with your gut and your leanings. There is no substitution for a personal experience because something that we may all hate you may love. So if you REALLY want to try something ... do it regardless of what anyone may say.

2. MinnieTink seems to hold the same beliefs that I do. I'm always relieved when I see others who have opinions that concur with my own. There are times when I feel like I am always the "heavy" ... but heavy or not I will always give my honest feelings on any given subject.

Sorry for the little rant ... onto your question!

Minnie is correct when she says that the food is very yummy and well prepared, however, I think there are better options to be had if you have the means. Disney doesn't have to work as hard because they, in a sense, have a somewhat captive audience where the Kobes and Benihanas have to do more work and try harder to get people to come to them.

I think that you can go off property and get a better show, larger portions, all for a cheaper price and, usually, that is what my family and I choose to do! Now, if you don't have a car to make it off property then this whole point is moot.

But here is the bottom line for you DisneyFor5 ... Teppan Edo IS a very nice restaurant with good food and a nice show. Will you be sorry you booked it? I don't think you will ... you MAY be a little disappointed with the amount of food you get but overall it is an experience you will enjoy!

I hope my review wasn't too confusing! :teacher: If you have ANY other questions or concerns I am more than happy to answer them!!!

Thank you all for the great information. We will be taking our kids so hopefully we have a "fun" chef  to make our experience a good one! :)

I really like the Teppan Edo dining experience! I also believe that a lot depends on your table-mates. We have been twice and last time we had an awesome group of people that made the meal memorable. I have both of my dining reviews in my signature if you care to see photos and read my opinion. :)

I think the kids would be entertained and like it as well.

We went for the first time last year and really enjoyed it. The chef was fun and made sure that the people who had allergy problems were well looked after.

Food is good, well cooked and its was fun to watch the show.

I had never been to a place like this before and I am aware that its not traditional style food that they aerve in Japan bur it was a nice meal and we will be going back again this year.

I say give it ago, if anything it will be a fun experience.

Its a fun show to watch, kids love it. The food is quite good. Its true that they dont serve nearly as much food as your local hibachi/teppanyaki place, but there is plenty of food nonetheless!!

I have to say, im actually quite surprised when I hear ppl say they wont go to Teppan Edo because they dont serve fried rice. Thats really a deal breaker????

I personally prefer the plain rice with a bit of soy sauce. Its quite good! The fried rice i tried at a couple of local teppanyaki places werent that great anyway.....the plain with soy tasted better!! if you mix it well, its kinda like fried rice. Your kid might not know the difference. :rolleyes1

I have seen a half dozen or so posts on people commenting on how they don't do fried rice at all. And for some it was a deal breaker. I guess because they may have lets say picky eaters and thats all they will eat.

We've had great experiences there. Granted, as others have said, it's the same thing that you would get st Japanese restaurants back home and we have wonderful ones near us, but it's still a nice experience. We have meet very nice people as you dine with others if you do not have a large enough party for a whole table. One time we meet a nice family, father and mother were both teachers and this started a conversation between us since my husband and daughter are both teachers. We saw them again at the AKL when we were going to Boma'a and we stopped and talked to them again! I think it's what you make it. We just love to try WDW restaurants!!

Enjoy The Magic!!

......we've been to WDW now 9 times in the past 8 years....and Teppan Edo (and also when it was called Teppanyki) has been a dinner destination each of those 9 times. The food is very good....and if you analyze it compared to other US hibachi restaurants...the food is more on the healthy side (no fried rice...much to the dismay of many)...a concentration on a larger portion of vegetables...and a reasonable portion of meat and or chicken or fish. The chef's have been great..and we were lucky enough to have the same chef in back-to-back years.

...we've also had the pleasure of having great table-mates on the occasions where we had less than 8 persons in our party.
