United tells me I will be flying "TED" out of Chicago to Orlando. Who is TED and does he offer any leg room? Or will I be stuck with SunCountry-type seating accommodations, where anyone over 5-10 is going to have leg room issues?

It's basically a re-branded wing of United. If you are a mileage plus member with premier status, you can bump up to economy plus which offers more leg room.

Also, when you check in, ask the attendant if anything is available in Economy Plus. If it's a low-capacity flight, you can probably get it.

Economy Plus is great...we flew Ted on 3 of 4 segments r/t Burbank to Orlando, and I sure appreciated the extra room. Dh is a Premier member with United's FF plan; that's how we got those seats.

Ted was fine, but I like both United and Song better. I'm not quite sure how to describe it, but "edgy" is the closest I can come. The flight attendents were helpful and friendly enough, but a bit on the sarcastic side. Same thing with cabin announcements (live ones). I would say they are aiming at the 25-45 y.o.'s, and definitely not families. I found this out when I wrote to express my concern with the episode of Scrubs that was shown on Tedvision (their in-flight entertainment, only one channel shown on overhead screens); it was a funny enough episode, but definitely not something I wanted my 9 and 6 y.o.'s watching. They replied that they aimed to please their primary customers...obviously not anyone with kids! So, service is fine, but I was left thinking I wouldn't choose to fly Ted again.

Hi Fargoman, We're flying Ted in November. Haven't yet.

Somewhere in this forum, someone posted a link to a 'seat mapper' website. You look up your airline and the type of plane and it told you about the seats. I was really disappointed to see that our plane, non economy plus, shown as being more uncomfortable than usual economy seating. YUCK!

Will definately try to get up to E+ but as they've already cancelled one Non stop (and I expect they'll further reduce) I would bet the flight is packed.

Good luck!

Ted is United's new low cost carrier. Same planes, new coat of paint, you pay for in-flight meals, and they took out 1st class to cram in more coach seats. Economy Plus is great if you can get it, otherwise your knees will say "howdy" to the back seat in front of you if you're over 5'5" tall.

The problem is that United gave several routes over to TED exclusivly, meaning that if you are a Milage Plus member and want to earn miles, you HAVE to fly Ted to certain cities. From Chicago, it's Phoenix, Orlando, and Las Vegas, the 3 cities I personally travel to the most. United itself no longer flies to these cities from Chicago. So no more free upgrades to 1st class! :( At least I quallify for Economy Plus.

That would be SeatGuru.
