Tell me about Stucco, Please!

Hi! Having gotten so many positive responses about concrete block & stucco construction, I'm not wondering about the stucco itself as an exterior. What are the pros & cons? How often does it have to be painted? Does it mildew? (We'll be in FL). What kind of upkeep does it require, and what kinds of problems do you have with it?

90 percent of the homes in my area are stucco. In Florida, wood siding doesn't hold up well. What we've found is that stucco develops hairline cracks. That is because it is really just a thin layer of a cement like substance. When the cracks appear, they have to be caulked and then painted. At first, I was afraid it was just a problem with my builder, but I see it all over the place in the Orlando area. Other than that, I don't know of other problems. Of course, I've only been in my home for a year and a half.
