Hi guys.

Well Well... Our UC Bearcats are going to the Sugar Bowl at the New Orleans Superdome on January 1. :woohoo: :cheer2::cheer2:

DH and my brother and his family are planning to head to New Orleans to attend the game. :thumbsup2 Can you guys tell us a little about the area? Where is the best place to stay etc...?

Thanks in advance!

There is a Marriott hotel on Canal Street that is in walking distance of both the Superdome and the French Quarter, IIRC. That would probably be an ideal place to stay.

The best place to stay is going to be wherever they can find/afford a room, LOL. A large part of the rooms available for the game have been gone for months now, because there are many people who always go to spend the holiday in NOLA and to see the SEC champion play, whoever it might happen to be.

Geographically, the Dome is located on the northwestern edge of the neighborhood known as the CBD, about a mile up Canal St. from the Riverfront, right at the confluence of I-10 and US90. There is a large Hyatt right next to it, but that won't be available, because the SEC always books the entire thing for the game sponsor and the press.- If they follow past practice, the Florida team will stay at the Hilton Riverwalk at the foot of Canal street -- this is a HUGE hotel that traditionally is one of the last ones to have rooms available, but your folks might want to avoid drowning in that sea of orange and blue. (Yep, I checked -- that's where Florida is staying.)

Any hotel in the French Quarter, the Central Business District (i.e., the CBD), or the Convention Center area will be close enough to take a cab from. There really isn't much to do in the CBD when businesses are closed, so if they want to be able to walk around and people-watch when they are not at the game, I'd recommend the Quarter first and the Riverfront/Convention Center area second. (Tell them that if they want to stay in the Quarter, read the TripAdvisor reviews before booking -- the Quarter has some hotels that are VERY run-down.)

If they are driving, parking on New Year's is always at a premium, so they will need to allow for that. The airport hotels are now in an iffy neighborhood, as Kenner has gone downhill badly in recent years. Metairie or Slidell will do if they are willing to commute, but avoid New Orleans East if possible.

Thanks! I know it will be hard to find a place, but I am sure I can find one somewhere. I just want to get it as close as possible.

Thanks for the heads up about where Florida is staying. LOL.

We stayed at the Drury fora concert once. Nice clean room. Walking distance from the Dome. Free GOOD breakfast with HOT FOOD and SODAS. Accepts pets. BEAUTIFUL lobby. Very secure...felt very safe there. Free *drinks* in the evening. VERY attentive staff.

Now, this was pre-Katrina, so it's been a while but I'm thinking that Hotels are trying even harder now that the $$$ is more scarce. ;)

Have also stayed at Hotel Le Cirque. VERY nice room, but a little further from the Dome and a more *deserted* feel to the area at night. Not bad if the streetcars are running that day/night, but if they aren't, it would be too far for me. (Of course, Taxis will be plentiful that day I'm sure...lol)

ETA: The Drury is also a short walking distance from Bourbon st and the street cars. And has gated parking lot.

I would definately try to book something now before everything books up for New Years Eve/New Years.

I don't believe that the Hyatt has been open for business since Katrina. It would be the closest to the Superdome. It was a great place to stay when it was open so I hope that it does reopen again someday.

There is a Homewood Suites on Poydras that is with in walking distance to the Superdome - We stayed there when I took my daughter and niece to see the Jonas Brothers - I felt very safe walking to and from the Arena (right next to the dome) and the Homewood Suites was nice. Here is a link for that one....

There is also the LePavillon on Poydras next to the Homewood. Here is alink for that one.........

There are also alot of nice places to stay in the French Quarter - you would prob need to catch a cab to the dome though if you opt to stay in the FQ. We like the French Quarter W they have the heavenly beds:cloud9:

Not planning on going but I'm so proud of our boys! I go to UC and it's great to have such a good team! Have fun!!!

We usually stay by the airport on Veterans (I think thats the name of the street) during Mardi Gras and its always been a decent price. (under $100 p night) It's about a 15 minute commute from the Dome. I'm pretty sure that parking will be expensive so I would count on at least $20 for parking each time.:)
