Tell me about iPods for a tween

My kids have the i-touch as well. One of my girls (13) uses it to do "face time" with her friend. As long as they have wi-fi they can chat with each other in live time and see each other just like a video telephone. You can also use it for texting and as just plain phone for free. You just have to download free apps for the minutes.

My daughter bought herself an itouch when she was 10 with her birthday money and a year and a half later its still perfectly fine and she takes that thing everyplace!! I just bought myself one for Christmas and I love it!

I have a touch, but got DS 14 a Nano. (Slightly older generation, not the itty bitty square one. The smaller one wouldn't play videos, I think it was, and he wanted that.)

I did not get a touch because of the wifi capabilities. I've heard conflicting reports on the ability to turn that off on a touch, but it's not a freedom I am willing to give.

He also tends to toss electronics in his bag/coat pocket/etc. He's already broken 2 camera screens- I didn't see a touch screen making it!

He's happy with it- plays music and videos and there are app games he can get for it as well.

DD10 has DH's old Nano.

The Itouch will serve her longer. I would go with that. We got our twins Nano's ? a few years ago, with the viewing screen. They use them ALL the time. DS16 wanted a Itouch for his birthday and LOVES it. He really wanted an IPhone but I told him he had to wait for that so the Itouch is a good option.

If she runs or wants it available for working out, many lines of workout clothing now come with media pockets so it really is a non-issue.

my kids are practical with electronic toys. They would rather have the simple iPods for their music, but they spend more time playing the Wii or Kinect. My son would rather save his money for the new DS3 then the latest iPod on the market. So for a kid like him, the Shuffle works fine for him.

We got our dds (11 and 8 at the time) iPod Touchs for Christmas and they have been great. They get used all the time. We got younger dd an alarm clock that used the Touch for her birthday which is great for her (older dd is slightly jealous - I know what we are getting her for her birthday now).

As long as you get a good screen protector and case they should be fine. The girls have taken theirs everywhere including bi-weekly ski trips where we try to be careful, but occassionally they get tossed around some, and are still in great condition.

My 7 and 10 year olds have nanos. They are the ones that take video so they like that but they use them mainly for music. They use their DSes for games. My 13 year old has a touch and has had it for a few years, she uses it for internet and games. Shestill uses her nano for music. For your dd's age, I would go with the touch, even if she doesn't use it for music she can still get alot of use out of it. If my dd wants to listen to music on hers, she just uses Pandora online (songs aren't censored FYI).

My DD wants an Ipod Nano for her 9th birthday. I don't like how small the newest one is. I will look into the refurbished touches, but not sure if she needs all that extra stuff yet. Is the 8G ok for her age?

I hate Apple's technology. Can't STAND running iTunes on any of our computers, and absolutly HATE how the iPod systems interface with the computers.

All of my kids have other-named MP3 players that have just as many applications and hold just as many songs/videos/etc, didn't cost nearly as much, and plug into the computer and use simple drag-and-drop technology. We buy our music from online retailers like Amazon or Walmart, and no one has to mess with the clunkiness of iTunes. Our music libraries are wonderfully portable, completely reorganizable, and very very easy to manage.

Just an alternate opinion to think about!!

Ok, I do agree with this, but our kids till have Ipods . We run Itunes on our old desktop because of this too . I wish, now that I have a Droid, that we didn't have Itunes and did what you did-but back then, there wasn't really an option.

My kids and I have been using iTunes for almost 5 years now. For us its very easy to operate as long as you have the correct updated software. Its very easy to sync. I just figured out how to transfer my iTunes to my Android. took minutes!

Buy the extended warranty if your afraid of breaking it. Did it at Office Depot and they promptly took care of my son's.
