I got a quote today from AAA for trip insurance. Total cost would be $122 for our flights and Disney package.

I have heard that Disney insurance is not as good as third party carriers, and wondering if anyone has experience with it? Any info is appreciated!

Thanks!

Hello
I have purchased DIsney insurance and used insuremytrip dot com as well. The most important factor in the insurance is the exclusions IMHO. Any pre-existant condition is excluded Unless you purchase a policy that covers it or adds it. Disney does NOT cover ...Many do not realize that IF per say someone got ill while on trip and then got ill during the trip it would not be covered....it is the Look Back Date (how far they look back) so another example is...If say your FIL had a heart condition, then heaven forbid had an issue and you had to cancel, no, that too would not be covered unless it was added/waiver.
IF you are looking for just basic coverage, you can go Disney, IF you are looking for better/more specific coverage, the other carrier is very good, well respected and I have used them for cruising..issues and once for a claim that was in the thousands. The ins. covers what you pay OOp for, so if you get credit back for a part, that is also excluded.
Just want to mention that adding disney ins can be done until you make final payment but cannot be refunded...so many don't add it on up front. Using the outside source allows you to get various prices, various options AND you can literally purchase it on the day of departure (though not sure why someone would wait that long)...longer you wait costs a bit more...
Hope this helped a bit....many skip ins...But if you have any doubt about losing $$ for sickness or canceling it is worth it IMHO...been there and had to use it....Good Luck deciding!
Oh, just want to also mention that looking at that other site will explain insurance as well...take a peek may help you decide.
Have a great, safe, healthy trip!

Thanks for the info.

We want to get it mainly because it will be hurricane season (we lost everything to Katrina, so we are nervous like that!) and also traveling with a 2 year old, you never know what may happen last minute. So we will definitely get something, just debating between AAA and Disney.

We want to pay the balance soon, so that's why I got another quote today. AAA seemed to have a good policy, and you helped explain some of the exclusions I have heard about Disney's insurance. That's my whole thing, too. I don't want to have to cancel and then the reason is not covered. Thanks again.

Whoa! It must be based on the value of the trip. We stayed at a value for 7 nights last time...and the insurance was just for that...and if I remember correctly it was under $30!

Still, when you've layed out a small fortune for a vacation, it's good to know that if someone gets sick you can leave and get most of your money back!

$30 total, or per person? Who did you go through?

Ours was $58/person and dd is no charge since she is so young. We insured the flights and the package. We are staying at a moderate for 6 nights on a 30% off pin code and buying 2 day tickets since we have some leftover tickets. Plus the meal plan.

It was based on cost, she had a sliding scale and as the cost of the vacation went up, the cost of the insurance did as well.

You might also check travelguard.com

We owned a travel agency for years and Travel Guard was, by far, our favorite insurer. They are very fair and prompt with claims. You can also ask your "regular" insurance agent about coverage- you likely already have coverage for your belongings through your homeowner policy. You may be able to buy a cheap cancellation policy.

The cost with TG is based on your trip price and the age of the traveler(s). Tour operator insurance cost is based on their "pool", so it is a good deal if you are older with an expensive trip-- not so much if you are in your 20's and staying at a value!

Another issue with purchasing insurance from the tour operator is that in the case of financial default (probably not an issue with Disney!), you will be left out in the cold.
