Was going to try 1900 Park Faire for Sunday dinner on 8/12/07. Want to go to a second buffet that was at a resort on the the DDP. What did you eat and how was the service? Please-Please-Please only respond if you have tried personally!

We love Boma! Here is our review from a recent (November 2006) trip:

We also dined at Boma, which was FANTASTIC! Call me plebian, but I enjoyed the buffet more than the signature restaurant.

The tropical fruit salad is out of this world. Apple, mango, papaya, grapes, banana, pineapple, coconut slices, all swimming in a broth that tasted like Coco Loco. Yum, yum, yum... It was very sweet, and I went back for thirds - I actually had this for dessert.

The couscous was underwhelming, and we felt that it lacked flavor. The same was true of the mixed grilled veggies and the pap, which was like lumpy, under-seasoned grits.

If you eat fish, the salmon was out of this world. The fruity coconut sauce paired so well with the fish; it was definitely my second favorite, after the fruit salad.

The mashed potatoes were fabulous. I tend to like sweet dishes, and these were sweet & cinnamony. Yum, yum, yum. The macaroni and cheese was very creamy, and I enjoyed it very much.

There were 5 soups, 2 of which had meat (sausage & chicken), 2 of which had seafood (a crab soup & a seafood stew), and 1 of which was vegetarian (the butternut squash soup). The crab soup was delicious, very creamy and flavorful. My only complaint, and it's an extremely minor one, was that it was slightly over-peppered, with large chunks of black pepper that interfered with my enjoyment of the creamy consistency. I didn't care for the seafood stew, as I'm not a huge fan of curry. The butternut squash soup was, again, sweet, and I like it very much. It was creamy and delicous; my husband remarked that it tasted more like a dessert, since it was so sweet.

The falafel was very tiny, and I enjoyed it very much, especially with the dip.

I didn't have the various hummuses, but my husband did. He said that nothing really stood out for him. The olive hummus lacked flavor, he felt, and the dark-red hummus (not sure what flavor that was) had lots of cumin in it. It tasted like fajita seasoning, and he felt it was way over-seasoned.

For desserts, we tried several. The peach crisp was doused with nutmeg (I think it was nutmeg), so much so that I couldn't stand to eat more than 2 bites. Someone got very happy with the shaker back there. The banana cream cannolis were good; the pastry shell was crispy and faintly sweet, while the banana cream paired well with the chocolate shavings. The zebra domes were good, as always, very smooth, creamy, and sweet.

I wish that we had taken pictures, but it was so crowded that I didn't want to stand at the buffet, snapping photos, and by the time I put things on my plate, the presentation was somewhat lacking in artistic merit.

I was disappointed that Boma no longer had a drink that I'd really looked forward to. I can't remember what it was called, but I had it a few years ago when we went to Boma for the first time. It was a pale blue pina colada, and it was YUM! The drink suggested by my server as an alternative was nothing like it, and wasn't nearly as sweet as a pina colada.

Our server at Boma was somewhat lacking. He was slow to clear our plates, which presented problems at our small table-for-two, and he never refilled my husband's drink.

Boma is one of my top favorite places to eat in the World. There is "normal" everyday food and a great offering of exotic african food. The CM we had was SO nice and she was very attentive even though it was very crowded when we went. The buffet was kept well stocked and the food was warm, fresh and delicious.

Here are photos of what we had at Boma. I can't WAIT to go back!

Ok now I"m hungry. I'd do anything for a bowl of coconut curry soup.. *sigh*

We love, LOVE, LOVE Boma. It's our only absolutely must do restaurant, and has been for years and years. We usually try to get there twice during longer trips, because the menu changes during the week.

I'm a vegetarian, and I loved the soups (they usually have at least one vegetarian choice), salads (exotic dressings are out of this world), hummus, cousous and vegetables, fufu (mashed sweet potatoes), pap (with spicy sauce from the prime rib station), and, of course, that dessert bar.

My dh (the carnivore) loves the soups (especially the butternut squash), ribs, prime rib, potatoes with afritude, salmon and, of course, that dessert bar.

Even the kids are happy at Boma. They always try a bit of everything, but if it's not to their liking, they are comfortable at the kids' section with chicken strips, mac and cheese, fries, spaghetti and meatballs, fresh fruit, and, of course, that dessert bar.

The chefs are among the friendliest at WDW, IMHO. Because of the open kitchen, they are often right there to answer any questions and offer suggestions. This last trip, they were even walking around the dining room, asking guests about their meals and making recommendations.

I just can't recommend it highly enough.

CinRell,

Thanks for the pictures. I think I saw a "zebra dome"-was it black & white?

Yes in the last pic they are the 2 shiney black and white circles on my plate...

Honestly they didn't do much for me. I prefered some of the other desserts.. but it might be because they were talked up SO MUCH on these boards I was expecting something more...

Isn't there a link somewhere with the menu rotation? This might be helpful to the OP. I remember seeing it referenced, but I'm not sure if it was on this site or elsewhere.

How old are those Boma photos? The last time I went they had swapped out the mini chocolate mousse desserts for a big bowl of chocolate mush. Don't know how they figured that was an improvement.

I noticed that because I am not a zebra dome fan. They still had those.

Boma was by far, the best meal on our December trip! I HIGHLY recommend taking the free culinary tour before you eat - they explained everything on the buffet in detail (and free samples over in Jiko too!) The tour meets at 3:45 at the Jiko podium (you can just show up - no reservations necessary) - so make an ADR at Boma for 4:30 or later.

My kids, who are fussy eaters, had plenty of American kid foods to choose from - pasta, chicken fingers, mac & cheese, etc. My favorites from the Boma buffet were the Arican flavored flank steak, coconut encrusted salmon, mashed sweet potatoes, grilled vegetables, the different humuses (is that the right plural for humus??), Butternut Squash soup, banana cream cannolis & the rice pudding. I went back for 3rds of all of those.

The service was just ok, nothing great, and it was crowded when we were there, however we weren't right on top of other tables. The lighting is a bit dim, as is all of AKL, just be aware of this ahead of time. We never waited more than 30 seconds at the buffet for someone in front of us, and everything was kept hot, fresh & re-filled if needed.

We stayed at AKL but I would definitely travel from another resort just for Boma in the future.

Enjoy!

In December we didn't have the mini chocolate mousse desserts either like in the pics - it was a huge bowl of chocolate mousse that was heavily flavored with liquer - we didn't like it very much. The liquer flavor was overpowering. We all tried zebra domes & weren't impressed with those either - but they sure seem to be a fave with everyone on DIS! I forgot to mention also that the night we were there they had a fabulous fresh fruit assortment.

I went last May for dinner and while I'm not crazy about prime rib or salmon I would return again for the soups and salads. It on my list for our August trip.

We had breakfast and dinner at Boma.

At both meals, the food was just unbelievable. I tried so many different kinds of food! Tastes like you have never experienced.

My kids loved Boma too. They ate a lot of typical kid foods, and tried a fair amount of exotic stuff, too.

The service was basic when we had dinner, but our server at breakfast was super fun. He was a character. He noticed that all three of our boys had big cowboy cap guns they had purchased at MK the day before, and "borrowed" two for a while. He went around serving tables with our kids' buns sticking out of his pockets cowboy style. He, and the jungle juice, really made that breakfast memorable for all of us!

Give Boma a try! :thumbsup2

:ccat:

No, no, not our kids' buns..... our kids' guns.

He was not that kind of character........

My bad! :rolleyes1

I absolutely LOVE Boma for breakfast and dinner. Very unique flavors and plenty to choose from!

I ate there this past Friday and it was great!! I always get the same few items, but they are so good!! The caserole with the beef is my favorite and I love the pastat salad with the curry sauce. They had the butternut squash soup which is incredible! I also had prime rib, fufu (sweet potatoe mash) and some of the curried rice with golden raisins. I can honestly say that I don't care for everything on the buffet, but the things I do like are awesome!

As I stated in the beginning I'm not going until 8/07. But making ADRs in a few weeks. So I have a TS open. I'm not very adventurous when it comes to food. I'm a Texas-born, California-raised meat and 'taters kind of girl! So I'm still unsure about Boma for a SUNDAY DINNER?!

I know what the menus say. I want to know what y'all like about this place.

We love Boma because it provides us with flavors we don't experience on a daily basis. Favorite atmosphere of all the buffet style restaurants... and unique and tasty dishes.

Some of our favorites are the salmon (no matter which recipe!), the coconut tiramisu, the coconut seafood bisque, the watermelon tomato salad, the dry rub ribs, and of course the zebra domes!

We always enjoy Boma!

:cutie:

We ate dinner at Boma last week and we all really enjoyed it. I loved the curry seafood soup (I love coconut curry) and the squash soup. The prime rib was good, not overly exotic. That would be fine for a "meat and potatoes" gal! We do like more exotic food, but I think there was plenty there if some of the more unusual flavors didn't appeal to you. They had salmon the night we were there, which I don't like. I think I liked everything I tried. I didn't have the rotisserie chicken, but my mom, dh, and kids liked it. There was a great selection of salads and fruit. The pap was just like the cornmeal mush my Kentucky grandma used to make. Our server explained everything on the buffet to us and was very helpful. My dh and dd8 loved the jungle juice as well. They both had it again for breakfast yesterday when we went back to Boma to try the morning buffet.

I think it would be a great choice for Sunday dinner. There is enough "normal" food that even the pickiest eater would have plenty of choices and it is a great way to sample new things you might never have had. I say go for it!

I went in September of 05... maybe they have different offerings on different days? The mini chocolate mousse was DELICIOUS!

OP... my ex fiance who was with me ONLY EATS CHICKEN at home. No kidding ONLY chicken with a side. He is NOT adventurous whatsoever and while he ate mostly "americanized" foods there he did try other things... he thoroughly enjoyed his meal and this is the least adventurous eater I've ever met.

Even if you HATE all of the african foods... there is a HUGE selection of "normal" food to eat. You might be surprised at what you'll like though.. I sampled a tiny bit of everything that looked good to me.. didn't finish what i didnt like and got seconds on what I did. The meat was cooked perfectly.

It was my favorite meal of the trip. I cannot wait to go back even though for me the bus ride there was grueling.

I thought Boma was excellent - i am craving Muligatawny soup right now. Enevn my 10 year old picky eater liked it.

I will be trying Boma breakfast in March - can't wait.
