Tell me about AT&T U-Verse

Well, I'm thinking of ditching the cable TV for a package deal through AT&T. We already have internet and phone service through them and the package deal they have would upgrade my internet, give me VOiP phone service and the same amount of TV we currently have (plus HD, which we don't have) all while saving me $20-$30 a month for the first year. After the first year the service would save me around $10 a month.

I'm not technical in any way shape or form, so I'm wondering what the layman's nitty gritty of it is. Is U-verse reliable? Is the picture quality there? I've seen the cable commerical that proclaims with AT&T U-Verse you can't watch more than 2 HDTV channels at one time and that isn't a problem...we only have one HDTV anyway. Are there other issues I should be concerned about??

Thanks for any advice, help, etc. All the reviews I read online are WAY too technical for me.

Hmmm.

Well I can tell you they're pretty reliable. We have had U-Verse since the end of October.

At first we had a slight problem with the phone. It seemed that everything was farther away and you would have to turn up the volume (if you could) to get the sound better. It's now been solved. Although, if you have some older phones, they won't ring with U-verse service. You will still be able to get service in and out on those phones, but no ringing.

The cable works great. I don't know about the HDTV as we don't own one. But, you can record and/or watch up to 4 channel/tv's at once with the dvr.
I love being able to watch stuff recorded on the living room dvr in my bedroom. And, if you're in the middle of watching a recording and need to go to another room to do something else, you can stop the recording and turn on the receiver in the other room and continue right where you left off.

Can't finish right now. I have to leave work. I'll come back later.

It is OK.

We have a "master TV" where you do all the work of recording, erasing, etc...

Stinky part is you have to record something in order to be able to pause it on another tv. Good part is, you can watch anything recorded on any TV. We have 4 other TV's and the "master" TV.

I hated that at first but when I went to my sister's with her DISH you had to stop recording a show in order to watch another program. That I would hate more.

In our area, the TV program will freeze sometimes. And I cannot watch recordings on the TV in my computer room without it freezing.

Now I don't know if that is just our area or a common problem.

Also we don't own a HDTV so I have no idea about that issue.

Ours is being installed today as I type this - my DH got a wild hair, he was tired of me complaining about the internet speed when I was on Facebook and up and switched everything.

So wait, you can only pause recorded tv not live? Please elaborate....that would stink

We like ours so far. We've had it less than a month. We switched from Dish Network.
There are a few very small issues I have with it. First, the remote seems less user friendly than the one we had with Dish, but that's just my personal opinion.
Second, we have had some slight issues with the picture freezing or flickering. But we did read online about people who have problems like this for the first couple of weeks and then they seem to iron themselves out.
Lastly, it is somewhat annoying that you can only freeze live TV on the "main" TV. But it's not the end of the world. Generally, if I'm watching TV in any other room, it's recorded TV anyway.
Otherwise we love it! We didn't even choose the fastest option for the internet, and it's faster than the regular DSL we had before. It's lightning fast! We don't have the phone as part of our package. (We dropped our land line altogether to save $$.) So I can't speak on the phone portion.

But overall, we're happy with the switch! :thumbsup2

You'll have a "main" TV (probably the one in your living room or family room) where you can do everything; record, watch live TV, pause live TV, etc. But then on any "secondary" TV's (like the bedroom or office), you can not pause live TV. You can watch live TV and you can watch and pause/FF/REW recorded TV, but no pausing live TV.

Rats - thanks for the info

Can you rewind live tv in other rooms?

I don't really like it. You can't schedule recording on anything other than the master TV, you can't pause/rewind live TV besides the master TV. You can't just search for 'movies', you have to go through all the movie channels which is a pain. Our billing got wonky also, so we're switching back to our old provider.

One thing I like about it is the organization, the DVR is very organized. :)

Thanks for the replies so far. I really appreciate it.

How was the installation process? Any big issues?

Do any of you do your DVR programming while online or from your phone? Is it easy to do?

I don't know if you can do that? :confused3

I know that they are continuing to add to the service as it is new.

For the most part we like it. We have had it now for about a year and half. About 4 different times we had lots of problems with pixilation and the screen freezing up. And by 4 times I mean 4 different periods of time lasting atleast a week or so. They always sent someone out and they would finally be able to fix the problem.

One time it was really bad and I had 4 techs out in a 1 week period. One was here for atleast 5 hours and told me he didn't have a clue as to what the issue was. Another one just left :confused3 But I finally got someone who knew what they were doing and it has worked well since then (that was several months back).

We hope it stays okay. I hate Directv and would never go back to them.

You can pause, fast foward and rewind live tv on the actual dvr and not the receivers.

You can schedule and delete recordings online from your computer. I believe there is also a way to do it from your cell phone. I use the computer all the time for my recordings. I just checked my book. You can program the dvr from a wireless phone from AT&T.
Go to: http://att.my.yahoo.com and log in to schedule your recordings online.

You can also set parental lockings on your dvr and receivers. There's also free games and the yellow pages on the tv. And you can upload personal photos to show on your tv.

Each dvr and receiver will allow you to go through and set up a favorites menu so you don't have to go through all the channels that you will never watch to find shows.

They did a complete installation of the main tv with dvr and 4 receivers in a house that's never had cable or satellite within 3 hours. We have a crawlspace. So he drilled a discreet hole in the floor behind each tv to run the wire (which filled the hole completely) under the house.

About a week after installation, we lost the cable. I called in that day and within 2 days (very busy at the time) there was a tech here to find that the connector went bad. It was replaced in no time and we were back up and running. A couple months ago, our dvr died suddenly. They had a tech here the very next day to replace it. Unfortunately, it couldn't be fixed, so I did lose all my recordings. :( But I think I've replaced all but about 5 of them now.

See above answer regarding scheduling.

There have been a couple times when the reception froze, but it came back within a minute or two. It's very rare to happen. As said, it happens a few times within the first couple weeks. But has happened only a couple times since. Usually only if there is really bad storms. But it's only a couple minutes tops.
I have had no problems with outages only with the receiver in the computer room.

They also provide a battery backup for your computer for the phone. It allows for up to 4 hours of backup. That's really the only drawback with the VOIP. If you lose power for a longer time, you will lose phone service. We haven't had that happen yet.

You can also listen to phone messages and set up voice mailbox as well as delete messages online. You can also set up certain numbers you want blocked, set up call forwarding and many other features online. Also, there is on tv screen caller ID.

One thing to note about the DVR's capacity, it will record 133 hours of standard def programming and only 37 hours of High Def programming. :( I wish it were more. Maybe that's something they are working on improving.

Just saw in the book that they are working on (or they were in October) having two streams of HD programming. So I guess you can only do two HDTV channels at once. :confused3

Anymore questions? :)

Dh and I love Uverse. I don't see a big problem with the fact that you can only pause and rewind from the master tv. I usually just record the program while watching, if I know I will be pausing it. Most of the time I don't watch live tv, because I hate commercials.

DH loves it for many reasons, but especially because he can set the dvr. He is out of town right now and made some changes to his recordings from there. The service has been excellent, no service interruptions in 1 year that we've had the service.
