I know this has been posted before, but I'm having difficulty finding it. My question is...

My DS13 is a very picky eater. At the moment, one of his favorite things to eat is steak. He's not a big eater, but can usually finish an adult portion of steak. The thing is, although he's fine with seasonings, he doesn't like things to "touch" his main course: veggies on top, steak placed on top of mashed potatoes, or even garnish.

Is it possible to order the adult steak and just ask for it with no garnish and only fries on the side, or can you order the steak from the children's menu for a 13-year-old? (He's pretty embarrassed at the idea of doing that.) If you can order from the children's menu, do they charge you the adult price or the children's?

We are paying OOP, not on the DDP. We leave TOMORROW, so TIA!

I have a very picky tween dd - last summer she had no problem ordering off the children's menu - the only issue were the buffets, where she was charged as an adult. She doesn't like ordering off the kid's menu either. Hopefully since your child seems more adventerous they will be willing to do some adult entrees with modifications.

A couple of years ago, my 15-year-old nephew ordered off the kid's menu at several restaurants because he'll only eat chicken nuggets or a grilled cheese sandwich. He often ordered two children's meals. We paid OOP. We had no problems. I don't know if things have changed since then.

No guarantees, but they typically will allow this. Worst case, they'd charge an adult price for an adult portion of a child meal. So just be prepared for that and you'll be fine.

Our DD is also picky and we were able to order off the kids menus (also not on DDP) at all restaurants in March. We only did 2 buffets because she was an "adult". I don't think you will have any problems asking for the sides to be on separate plates, most of the restaurants are very accomodating.

They have steak on what kid's menu? I thought the standard was mac and cheese, chicken nuggets, spaghetti, pizza, that stuff. Where do they have steak?

I'm not sure of everywhere that they have steak on the children's menu, but we have ADRs at Le Cellier and Concourse Steakhouse, and they have children's steak at both of those.

At a buffet - any child over 9 will be charged adult prices - no matter what they select to eat.

At a restaurant with a menu - ala cart - yes. most places allow it. Our teen DS ate the adult shrimp coctail appetizer (no sauce), kids grilled chicken breast and the adult chocolate wave dessert.
Our tween DD never had a problem with the childrens menu.

And YES - any menu item can be modified - unless it's on a buffet- and as long it is somewhere on the menu, such as swapping a baked potato to french fries.

You can get salads without dressing, chicken without the sauce, no salt on items, have an appetizer as a main meal, have just soup and salad, and depending on the hour of the day, say you are only having dessert and coffee - no dining menu required.

Check out the menu's... http://www.allearsnet.com/din/dining.htm

Enjoy popcorn::

At a restaurant where you order off a menu, it is no problem. You can get a child's portion (and pay the child's price) or get an adult portion and pay about double the kid's price. I've done this as an adult--no problem.

That's nice to know! DD got a bit sick of mac and cheese and grilled cheese and the other standard kids menu stuff. She ended up ordering off the adult menu (not on a plan) things like salad, rice, etc.
