Ok, so what's with that? We were at a local hot dog place and a girl came in, maybe 15 or so, and she was sucking on a pacifier.

I thought I read once that they used them for drugs, but it's not as if she seemed 'high' or anything... I just thought it was very strange...

The candy one are really popular no matter the age... I saw some at Six Flags today doing the same thing...

I wonder if sucking on those things could warp their teeth. My youngest DS had to stop using his "nipsie" because his teeth were bowing outward and he was grinding the top teeth down. UGH it was awful to go through. Maybe this is just a fad.

pacifiers are actually the number 1 piece of paraphanalia for teens or others using ecstasy because it cuases the jaw to contract and people to grind their teeth so teens will use a pacifier or a blow pop to put between their teeth to keep form grinding. I don't necesarily think you would have been able to tell the teen was using ecstasy or not from what I undertsand they don't always react the same.

back when i was in high school (5 years ago) pacifiers were "cool". not for any drug related reasons but because they were "fashionable".

That's a new one on me! I really am not "with it." My kids didn't want them as babies, I hope they don't want them as teenagers. Lol. Of course, that would be my luck. ;)

It was a real one. I saw her take it out and then put it back in. I've got two small children (with one being an infant) so I think I can hopefully judge real versus fake...

I thought about it being a 'candy' one, but she never redipped it or anything. The cashier asked her why she was sucking on a pacifier and she ignored him.

And Yes, I thought the reason babies have to stop using them is because it over time will modify their palate and teeth just like a retainer of sorts.

Maybe I'm not just as hip lately.

Well, that makes 2 of us, because I think it just looks silly. Teenagers spend their entire lives trying to act older but then they stick a binky in their mouth?

It's popular with the Rave crowd, because of the side effects from XTC. I have never seen anyone in school sucking on them.

And yes, they will warp your teeth. I sucked my fingers until I was pretty old and had buck teeth as a result. I needed braces because of it.

Overall I would think it would be an advertisement to other teens, like I party with drugs. Now the teen may or may not party with drugs but I suppose it is like the "roach clips" we had back in my day.
If you want to meet up with kids that do drugs or just go to a party this is how you would do it.

My dd just returned from resident camp on Sat night and there was a girl that went up and last Monday when they left she was sucking on a pacifier. I believe it was because she was nervous and I forgot to ask dd if she used it all the rest of the time they were up there. She did not have it in her mouth when they returned Sat night.

Well it's been a fad for a number of years then. When I was at band camp in 7th and 8th grade, we bought pacifiers and sucked on them and also wore them around our necks. This was just a fun thing to do and no drugs involved. I am 52 years old and so this was around 1963-1964. We only did this while at band camp though.

When my son was a freshman in Band last year, his "big brother" a senior in the band gave him a binky also and a teething ring. (FYI, big brothers aren't your sibling but an upperclassman assigned to look after you.)

like wagamama, this was a trend when i was in high school, and it was not related to drug use.

I'd rather see them suck on pacifiers than their thumbs. I teach high school and had three different female thumb-suckers this year in three different classes.

I'm sitting here roaring! :teeth:

So .......... how is one supposed to react to a teenager standing in front of you who is sucking on a infant's pacifier? Are you supposed to act like they are NOT? Are you supposed to not notice it and let them do their thing? Is one supposed to treat them like the pacifier sucking toddlers they're immitating?

I'm so glad I'm not hip or cool if that is hip or cool! :p

If the teens really want to be on the cutting edge of cool, they'll pick up a couple of these...

I was in high school the same time as Wagamama and Caity, and it wasn't a trend in New Jersey! :p

I agree with the warped teeth - I sucked my thumb a good portion of my childhood, and I still have buck teeth that can't be corrected. :(

I saw a group at the mall sucking on binkys the other day. My son looked at them and then looked at me and said really loud "What's wrong with THEM"!
