I have been searching for inspiration on the internet and I keep seeing a technique I really love, but I don't know how they do it. I posted a link to explain what I mean, I hope that's acceptable.

How to you create very specific words in really cool fonts. Is this digital scraping or is there a way to do it non-digitally with stamps or other media? For example how did they create the "sweet dress" image in this layout:
http://twopeasinabucket.kaboose.com/pg.asp?cmd=display&layout_id=1091701

Would printing it on an 8 1/2 x 11 paper and then cropping and adhering it work? Wouldn't it waste a ton of paper?

If I'm printing on a color specific, I'll sometimes use painters tape and tape a scrap onto a larger sheet to print on, that way the size is closer :D Don't know if this would work for every printer though

That looks like either a rub-on or it was typed right on the paper.
There are several ways to get letters.

  • Rub-ons which you can buy at most Craft stores
  • Sizzix die cuts - this cuts out all the letters piece by piece (sizzix.com)
  • A die cut machine like Cricut, Wishblade, or Craft robo. The Cricut uses cartridges but the Wishblade and the Craftrobo uses any true type font on your computer. The machine does the cutting for you.
  • Printing via computer. Depending on the look you want, you can print directly on the paper, vellum, or clear transparencies.
  • Letter stamps

For the die cuts you would need a xyron sticker machine to make the letters sticky and then adhere them to the page.
For the paper, if I'm not using a full sheet, I will print on regular white paper and then use double sided tape to adhere the paper that I want to use say 3x5 sized and tape it to the white paper over the first printing. Then re print on the patterned paper. With vellum and the clear transparencies I use the whole sheet in the printer then cut it to size.
There are a ton of free font sites out there too so you don't have to spend a fortune on fonts. This is my favorite:

the font you are seeing in that title is a Rub on..by Heidi Swapp I do believe!

you can also print on smaller scraps of paper by using a piece of double-sided adhesive tape, stitcking it to a piece of paper and running it through your printer. Just print on a full-sized sheet first and then stick your paper onto that sheet where it printed

Digital is probably the easiest and most effective way to do this, then you can select just the right size and make the letters fit the space exactly. Some software can also adjust the spacing between the letters (kerning).

Dry transfer is probably your best bet for non-digital but that would require purchasing two sets of letters and you are still stuck with one color (usually black).

I agree with the poster who commented that those letters look like rub-ons (which I LOVE!), but it would be equally easy just to run the piece of patterned paper through your printer and then cut it to size. I do that A LOT. I do virtually all of my journaling on the computer and some of my titles. There are some incredibly cool fonts out there, available for free.

(Just don't let your DH buy a new computer and tell you that he is transferring all of your great fonts.... including some you paid money for.... onto a jump drive... and then he loses the jump drive!:sad2: Very frustrating!)

Good luck................P

It sounds like I really need to play with the computer fonts more.

I have used some fun fonts for paragraph type journaling, but nothing else. Thanks for the great ideas I'll have to try them out.
