dd was watching a DVD this mornig. the movie froze in the middle of a scene and would not advance. she started the DVD over again and it played well, then froze in the exact same spot.

any ideas what's causing it? and can I fix it?

If you only have one DVD player in the house, then you can't try it on another to see if it's the DVD itself, or the player.

But it sounds like there could be a surface defect on the DVD. Try to clean it with an appropriate DVD cleaner.

That would be my guess too.
If you try to wipe it off, make sure you go from the center to the edge.
If it's a rental a little tiny bit of soap and water works wonders but make sure you don't scratch it.
If you own it there are DVD scratch removers and cleaners available.

sometimes our dvd player (getting older now, LOL) will freeze in the spot where it shifts over to the second "layer" or whatever it's called. we need to get a new one, but we're saving up money for vacation right now, LOL. :p i don't know if anything can be done to fix this.

Probably a speck of something on the disc. It may even be a fingerprint. Get a moist soft cloth and GENTLY clean the disc from the center to the outer edge. It will probably play just fine.
