We have a new oddity on our computer. When we turn it on, our C Drive file page pops up in front of our desktop. We have to close it out to get to the desktop.

WHY????

We've run spyware and ad-aware looking for strange stuff. No dice.

We have a firewall and a virus scan. Haven't opened anything recently that looks suspicious.

Anyone have a clue as to how to stop this? It's more annoying than anything....but we are clueless as to why.....

Oh....and Windows 98 doesn't have a restore feature....so we can't do that.....

Thanks....

Haven't seen that, Gina, but I'll bump this up so more see it.

I've no idea either, but my opinon is computers are a big puzzle.

We just had to get this one seen to because it started doing dumb things.

I'll never understand computers, they are too technical & there is way too much invovled in learning about them. I take my hat of to computer techs..........they are wonderful:D

DH just sent me into Programs.....start up.

I have a listing for Microsoft find fast.

When I pull up find fast.....

I get....

Index for documents in and below (C: )

Status: update automatically

Last updated: April 11, 2004

Is this supposed to be here.....does anyone know?

Thank you, Dan. I'll be sending DH these links right now.....

I appreciate it.

Get Rid of the Unwanted Explorer Windows at Startup

Windows automatically loads any Explorer windows and Folders that were opened when Windows was last shut down. To stop this from happening, try the following:

Make sure you close all Explorer windows and Folders before shutting down.
You might not be shutting down completely; make sure you see the screen that says, "It is now safe to turn off..."

To stop Windows from saving Window locations (Windows 95/98/Me only):

Install and run the System Policy Editor (poledit.exe) - it's in the \tools\reskit\netadmin\poledit folder of the CD.
Select Open Registry from the File menu.
Double-click on the Local User icon.
Open Local_User\ Shell\ Restrictions.
Turn off Dont save settings at exit.
Click OK, and select Save from the File menu.
Click on the desktop, and press F5 to refresh the desktop so that this change will take effect.

Note: If you turn off this setting, Windows will not remember any of your window positions or settings (icon sizes, sort orders).

Note: This setting can also be changed with TweakUI.

Note: This might also be happening because of another program that's run when Windows is started. If that is the case then:

go to start--run-- and type: msconfig
then ok

go startup
uncheck all the boxes for the programs that start with windows

Uncheck ALL the boxes????

Coqui, does this also work with Windows98SE?

Also, we might just upgrade to XP. Is it worth it?

If you know that a certain program isn't causing it, then you can leave it unchecked. This is just stuff that starts up everytime you log in. It won't hurt the machine if you don't have it running.

Once you resolve the issue, you can re-check the boxes you want one at a time rebooting to find out if it comes back.

This will work with 98, 98 SE and XP only. 95, NT, and 2000 Do not have an msconfig utility.

Windows XP has much better memory resource handling and is in general a much more stable operating system. As to it being worth it, that would depend on the specs of your current machine.

Thanks, coqui. We have enough memory for XP. DH just checked the specs and we're fine.

We're (who am I kidding.....HE'S going to try) the procedure you outlined. We probably will buy XP ...... this is just giving him the extra push.....;)

Thank you all for your time.....let's hope some of this works....

BTW, Dan....he had me work on findfast....didn't do a thing, though it did have our C drive listed as being updated everyday. We deleted the C drive listing (actually I did it.....) Did nothing one way or the other....

Aren't a few needed, like systray and explorer?
