Teams 2010?

Maura - Love your description of the teams!!!

For those that commetn that things are a bit loose in January, I don't know how that will ever change. Manay/Most? of us have just accomplished our biggest goal of the year. We worked our tails off trianing and are now in a rest period. Some take longer to get bakc form WDW. Some need ot catch up on teh real world. It's just always been that way. For me, it's not going to change. It takes a while ot get back in the swing of things. Many of us aren't as focused as we are in reverse taper adn no races. I don't knwo how to amke it change without putting stress on those recovering from marathon.

As for all the things teams shoudl do. Wow, if I were told I had to do those things being on a team, that might scare me away. I like leaving it to teams for what they want to do.

Charities - This has been discussed before and feel free to try again if that's somehting burning in you. We found that we all have very personal reasons for the charities we support and that finiding a ocmmon one is hard. Putting energy into a charity that is not your passion is difficult. LIke I said, though, there may be a group more willing ot work on that now.

Team Ohana is planning to revive the Monday Mixer starting next Monday! The Mixer will have its own thread on the board this year and all are welcome, encouraged, possibly even urged to join us for a fun weekly question and socializing!

Bumping up with a question for consideration.....

Now that we have had a New Year's run on team requests (yeah for new WISHers!) We have 6 teams that each have 14-16 members. Does anyone think that there is a sixe that is "too big" and what would be a good way to start a new team in a way that would make it successful?

Thanks,

Maura

Maura - That is getting pretty large. I don't know of a magic size but, certainly less than 20 IMO. As for a good way to make a new team? Seems it owuld be best to get ~5 WISHers that have been around at least a year that agree to psot regularly to get things going. How to get thoe volunteers? Ask and hope soemone takes you up on it? Very good question. I hope someoen can come up with a good answer! Thansk so much for taking over the rosters!:goodvibes

I don't think teams could or should be limited to a certain number of people. If a WISHer comes to a team and asks to be included, are they to be turned away because the magical, arbitrary number has been reached?

Complestely agree, Connie. Didn't think of that. however, I think we should have a limit (use that term loosely) that tells us if we shoudl start a new team.

I just wanted to say that I liked the idea of the WISH 5K in January. It would be much more fun to run and hang out with WISHers. :)

A mentor system would be good, though. If there are some WISHers who would like to form a team, then it should be so. I think putting a new person in charge of team is not the best idea!

sorry, IMO and just my two cents and I do think we need a cap on team numbers. It does start to get too big at some point and then people feel bad not being able to keep up and post back to everyone, sorry and this just my own experience. So, yes I do think when enough of people start asking to be put on teams have them start a new team - maybe find one that has posted on dis or WISH and ask them to coordinate the new team. Ask for volunteers to post at the beginning, but as with all the teams, each one does have its own "feeling" and it takes a bit of time to get things rolling.

Why do we need a cap, specifically? People come and go on teams all the time. They leave if it's not a good fit. They leave because it was more work than they intended. They leave for emotional, financial, family problems. For every person that leaves a team, there is a unique reason. Are there caps on the bots or the phat girls or the leaners or the main thread?

Teams are a place IMO that people can go where they aren't overwhelmed by teh huge size that WISH has become. If they are comfortable in the large format, they will post in the monthly thread. The teams are supposed to supplement that and give people a small comfort zone or a smaller gorup to become closer with or to get their feet wet. While I would never want to turn anyoen away if they have a reason to want to be on a specific team, that's fine. However, to let a team get up to 40 people, it seems like it defeats the smaller format purpose.

There hasn't been a team that has reached that number, unless perhaps, you count all the people ever assigned or joined a team over the last two years. People come and go. As I recall, someone (I forget who) offered to chair another team. Why all the speculation and regulating? is it really necessary?

Seems to me, anyone is free to start a team. Are you volunteering?

And are you prepared to put a cap on the bots, the phat girls, the leaners or the main thread?

Maura did us a huge favor and took over the rosters. She is worried that teams are starting to get large and asked for opinions. If she's like me, she likes to have a plan and a solution in place instead of worrying about what to do or risking teams becomming too big and then losing members. Yeah, that would solve the team size problem, but not the outcome we want.

What's the problem in getting opinions?

There is no problem with getting opinions. There is NOT currently a problem with team size. That's my point. There is NO problem. Why does there have to be a solution to a problem that does not exist?

The teams will decide if they get too unweildy and they may well decide to form a second team, if it comes to that?? Which, is how group dynamics work, in the real world and in forums, too.

I understand that Maura is concerned. That gives her the option of asking if someone would like to captain a team. Easy. If no one steps forward, (you would be a great captain, Carrie) just let it ride. What else can you do anyway with a free public forum?

One more thing, if you limit "teams" are you also going to limit the numbers of people who can reply to every other thread?

And are you prepared to put a cap on the bots, the phat girls, the leaners or the main thread?

None of these were deisgned ot be a small group setting same as none of teh other threads were. Not sure why you are grouping all of these together.

Again, it'd be nice to have a plan to avoid future problems, unless the majority feels that's not in the best interest of teams.

Now, if there's no problem with getting opinions, why don't we step back and let others chime in?

I wasn't aware that WE were preventing anyone from chiming in.

We are grouping these altogether because Debra asked early in this thread if we want to continue the competition of Teams or wanted to be more like these other groups. If limitation is good for one group, why not all groups?

I genuinely would love to hear your answer. I feel that there are more questions on the table than answers and would LOVE to understand your particular reasoning. I do not wish to offend you.

In regards to the bolded - I think its good to put a limit on the team groups because then it defeat the smaller group idea. I don't think it should be a set in stone limit but I think it would be best to try and keep the team groups at a small managable number. If someone asks to be specifically put on a team and say that team has 20 members already then I don't think they should be turned away. I think the other group threads (i.e - the BOTS, race groups etc.) shouldn't be limited because they are a different type of group trying to fulfill a different need then the teams. :confused3 just my opinion

I for one was not very good about posting my miles to my team the last 2 years but I always felt a part of the Duck team as well as a member of the WISH team. Now I am trying to be more involved by being the team captain. I don't think this is something that is supposed to cause undue stress - its supposed to be something fun and motivating to help us all get to our goal to stay healthy.
