Teams 2010?

Debra - I thought it was a virtual and real 5K - I keep remembering Erika's post - she posted about not being able to attend at the last minute (due to family trauma) and her last post mentioned she was determined to get out there and run "with us" where she was! That really touched my heart - I know there are many WISH'ers that cant go every year, but are supportive -

and having a 5K where its totally inclusive would be cool... (if not impossible! ;) )

A quick google gave me this:

http://www.crownawards.com/StoreFront/CM24WFRG.ALL.Medals-Dogtags.Winged_Foot_Medals.prod

for $2.29 + shipping and handling etc!! :)
Can you imagine? Seriously - if you can dream it....

http://www.justawardmedals.com/Custom_Die_Cast_Medals_s/170.htm

its so about the bling people!!

Ok, I am up for that.
Warriors will host the Turkey Trot 10K!!!
(of course I haven't asked them yet, but sure they are cool with it! hahaha :lmao:)

Maybe the Ducks could host the Valentine's Day Virtual 5K?

Oh, and I was thinking the same thing. Have people who can't do the WISH marathon weekend 5K on Friday (like Deb and I discussed, some of us are kinda over the $$ that Disney asks for the 5K), do their own virtual WISH 5K.
Medals are an option that can be discussed and I know its getting exciting, but LOTS of time to think about the details to come, whoo hoo!!:cool1:

Of the buzzies left I believe this list would like to continue on a team of some sort.

WDWFAN9 - Pat (Co-Captain) - Not sure
Duanerice – Duane
syko - Kirsite~Louise
aldisneygrl - Allie

Caseydilla may be interested, but I haven't seen her on here in a little while.

I think with our group being just a few left it may be best to just put everyone on the different teams.

I'm good with being placed wherever and am happy to just post on the main threads and bouncing around from team to team. (Till they tell me to get out) :rotfl2:

Me too! I am willing to be thrown in the pot, shook up, and thrown back out and see where I land......Kinda like the game of Boggle! :lmao:

You know me, I'll be fine wherever and with whatever. :goodvibes

As someone new to all of this, here are my thoughts on the teams based on what I've experienced over the past month....

I think having teams is generally a good idea. They seem to help provide a place for people to interact more personally and have a home, so to speak, without having to read and comment on every post on every thread. It sounds like the teams need something to focus their members and keep them active within the team and thus within WISH as a whole. It appears that the miles and minutes challenge done previously is falling out of favor, so why not have something else replace it? Why not have a contest to see which team can raise the most money for Haiti? Can donate the most old running shoes and clothes over the course of the year? Can have the most members running a virtual race on the same day?

Not being on a team, I find the board to be a bit less interesting now than it was when everyone was gearing up for marathon weekend. The threads then were very focused and gave us all a common goal and topic to talk about. Now, with people taking breaks and no common race to focus on, the discussions are mainly happening within the team threads. It's hard as a new person here to follow all of the various team topics and the general ones too, so I find myself skimming rather than reading. Maybe it's just me, but I think having teams and being on a team would keep people engaged and coming back to the board to interact more often and more regularly.

And like I said to you at the Up & Away 5K, a January, no-fee 5K rocks and I'm up for helping you organize it! I, for one, am not that enamored with the race fee for Disney's official 5K. Or the start time! (Right, Pat?)

:rolleyes1
There's a top secret running path from OKW to SSR where there could be an informal, no-fee, 3.1 mile group run/walk on the Friday morning of marathon weekend.

Mel, that sounds good and remind me of that when the time gets closer.:thumbsup2
I was also thinking of an area where it would be easy for everyone to get to, by bus, by car, by cab. Like meeting at one end of the DTD area parking lot or something.

See, for me, it's very important that the monthly thread continue (and I'd even like it to have enough activity to be weekly again). First, we have WISHers who do make that their "home." Second, people new to WISH can dive in there, get a feel for the place, and see whether they'd like to stay. Questions are asked there, but sometimes it's just chatty. Sometimes I just browse the monthly thread to see what people or up to, and will hopefully be a stronger presence there this year. Third, I think people will continue to post their questions as their own thread if that's what they want--I don't see the monthly thread competing with that.

Oh, and I don't see the race threads disappearing at all!

Deekay, you said what I'm feeling better than I could, methinks.

I have been around here a long, long time as well (since 2005, when we were just a weekly thread on the main WISH board before we got our own forum) and have really enjoyed the influx of new people and the evolution from a group focused solely on WDW Marathon weekend to a group committed to all sorts of endurance events all over the world (with of course, WDW Marathon Weekend).

I understood the team concept when it was launched, as it was a friendly competition and way to keep track of miles and such going forward and I don't think you saw the weekly thread suffer for it.

Now the weekly thread is now a monthly thread... and from the outside looking in... the teams are much more insular than they were. By removing the weekly/monthly miles challenge, the teams essentially become clique threads and are beginning to cause the problem they were intended to solve: creating groups of people that appear to newcomers to move too fast and be too insular for new people to join. There are people out there who feel they don't belong here because they are NOT members of teams...

It still makes me feel really good when someone new to the group posts a welcome and they are uniformly welcomed with open arms and tons of support. That's the real spirit of WISH... and it heartens me to still see it alive and well.

From the looks of things, it appears that some of the team threads will go on... in what form or fashion, who knows. But the monthly/weekly thread needs to stay. The "why bother having it" question? Where are members to go if they aren't members of, or wish not to participate in, a team clique thread? To me, that would be the ultimate affront to non-"team" members, old and new.

I love the idea of more virtual events. The 10K at Thanksgiving was a nice surprise and came off well. So going forward I would love to see those happen and will happily join in!! Thanks to Tracey for starting what I hope becomes a bigger part of the group. The individual race threads for non-WDW Marathon weekend stuff... love that too!

I know this was long-winded, but ultimately what I hope happens is that all the members of WISH get out of it what they need and what they put into it. This is a remarkable, supportive place that has helped me in many ways. I have met people who I sincerely hope are lifelong friends. They have encouraged me to do things I wasn't sure I was capable of.... and I hope everyone here, team or no, is able to have that same experience.

:earsboy:

Debra,

I will try to get together a WISH 5K for the Friday before the January Half and Full Marathons. It will be open to anyone who wants to join in. I will work on the details later and come up with ideas.

YAY!! Maura!! congrats!
-Tracy

This is the best idea that I have heard in respect to the WISH since I got here in '06. I WISH race on Friday - brilliant! I might come down for that even if I couldn't run the other races.

So as the new "Team Member Coordinator", I'd like to get moving. There are some people who have expressed an interest to be on teams, and we don't want to keep them all hanging. So I will post a new thread to send out a new call for team members. I will also ask Bill to update his welcome thread . In the welcome thread, I would also suggest we include something along the lines of...

"WISH Teams have been established for any WISH'er who is interested in interacting with a smaller group of people within the WISH environment. Teams have been helpful to some WISH'ers in providing additional resources, support, and camaraderie; and can be a good way for new WISH'ers to become an intergral part of the WISH family without feeling lost in the "big WISH forum".

WISH teams are not mandatory, are non-exclusive and are always welcoming to new members and to "visits" by any and all WISH'ers."

Anyway, to manage this, I need to know which teams are continuing, who the captains are and how many members you have. Here is what I think I know:

Super Goofs, Captain=suzannews (Suzanne),
Ohana, Captain=? (was deekaypee)
Walt's Warriors, Captain=disneyfan21 (Tracy)
Donald's Defiant Dashers, Captain =TnTsParty (Tricia)
Hakuna Matata, Captain = Steffwalks (Connie)

Buzz is disbanding
Rebel Alliance is ??

Maura

I wasn't the Ducks captain but since no one has stepped forward as of yet I will take on the role as acting captain - I just don't want to step on anyone's feet.

How secret is this path Mel? LOL.

I run it several times each trip. OKW, through the Lake Buena Vista golf course, then either left to SSR or right to Downtown Disney.

I can put this in, just let me know what you want for the final wording. Also if the teams have a central thread that people can go to, I will put a link in for that as well.

Rebel alliance is - drum roll - IN! Looks like we are 5 strong but we will take our 5 hard core dedicated members and make one hell of a team.

DTD would also work if it's early enough in the am. I love running through there first thing before it opens. Could start from Cirque de Soleil then just run through the 'streets'. I'll be at WDW the weekend before Princess for DD6's birthday so could get some Garmin measurements.

I love that path!
