Teacups = no spin???

Just read the piece in the LA Times today about the changes to the spin on the Teacups . . . WHAT IS UP WITH THAT??

From the LAT today 2/29:

The teacups still rotate, but fans said the park has tightened the mechanism so it's impossible to produce the old stomach-churning spin. It takes near-herculean strength to make them rotate even slowly.

Disneyland officials said they made the change after a disabled patron lost his balance and slipped from a teacup last month. He did not require medical treatment.

Officials from the Department of Occupational Safety and Health, the state agency that regulates amusement parks, investigated, but didn't ask Disneyland to modify the ride.

I could get flamed big time for this but IMO....

The rides come with warnings. People that know that they have limitations either shouldn't ride, or in the case of the teacups spin .

I'm guessing that Disney can't take any more bad publicity after Big Thunder, so if there is even one incident on a ride, they will make any possible modifications.

What bugs me about this is that it could get carried way too far. If someone vomits on CA Screamin'...are they going to slow it down? Take out the upside-down part? You get my drift.....

I'm all for safety...don't get me wrong...but people should know their limitations and the rest of us shouldn't have to suffer if they don't.

Frankly, I agree with justmestace. You don't have to go on every ride in a theme park to have a good time. But after the problems they've been having with their roller coasters--Big Thunder Mountain in CA, and Space Mountain in Tokyo--they're probably scared stiff of more accidents.

We visited Dl for the first time last week, and we thought it strange that it was close to impossible to spin the teacups. I also agree with everyone here - people know their limitations, so if you cannot ride a ride, then just don't. My little ones really enjoyed the ride, but my DH and 14 year old daughter thought the ride was rather lame. I thought it was cute, but a little disappointed it was so hard to turn the teacups.

Here's news from People.com:

Meanwhile, in semi-related news, there's been another uprising, this
time at Southern California's Disneyland, where the 49-year-old Mad Tea
Party ride in Fantasyland is being criticized for having been
mechanically tamed and made harder to spin.


The Los Angeles Times says that recently a handicapped writer had been
injured on the ride (though not seriously), so the Party has been
slowed
down -- prompting its fans to march to City Hall on Disneyland's Main
Street in protest and post hundreds of messages in Internet chatrooms
under headings such as "Save the Teacups," according to the Associated
Press.


There's even reputed talk of a spin-in, if protestors can get the cups
twirling.


In a written statement, Disneyland officials, claiming there have been
few complaints, insist: "The ride remains entertaining and exciting for
guests of all ages."

Can't wait to tell my snotty 9 year old that mom is not a weakling, the ride is altered! Just about gave myself a stroke trying to turn that stupid cup while my husband camcorded and laughed his you know what off at my troubles! I noticed that if you have two burly guys doing it you can get it to spin a little. Hate to be politically incorrect but why do we all have to pay but because somebody else got hurt but not enough to require treatment. Give me a break and put it back the way it was before I return in May!

A few of the "guests" quoted in the articles were posters at another Disney messageboard!!! Pretty Cool huh!

Anyone who's there if you get a chance place a written complaint at City Hall, hopefully this will help get the Teacups a spinnin'!
