I'm in advanced teaching classes now and we are learning about law and how it pertains to us, parents, and students. My group has to find a court case using at least one Amendment. Any suggestions?

Sorry, I can't help you with that, just giving it a bump.

I'm not a teacher either, but I took a couple pre-law classes last spring and this site was pretty useful:

Landmark Cases.Org

It has some key definitions and some teaching aids for different reading levels as well. . hope this helps! :)

how old are your students, what issues do you want illustrated?

if you can't find what you're looking for at findlaw, give me a hint as to what you want and maybe I can come up with something. in law school I took an entire year of Constitutiional law.

I took a History of Education course, and of course we used tons of courts cases as precedents.

Of course there was the separation of church and state, the Scopes Monkey Trial. There was also Plessy v Board of Ed.

I remember actually doing an assignment like this, and I pulled a case out using a History teacher using "teenage vocabulary"-. using some curse words. Most parents were offended by his choice of words.

The board of ed wound up supporting his decision.

it's "Plessy v. Ferguson", Cindy, and "Brown v. Board of Ed." Plessy was a Civil War-era case establishing "separate bu equal" as the standard until it was overtunred in Brown.

I'd recommend FCC v. Pacifica Foundation -- not just for George Carlin fans, but also for Howard Stern fans. a serious first amendment issue -- how do we govern the airwaves?

the courts are revisiting the Miranda decision, that should make for lively discussion.

There is a book called "We The Students" by Jamin Raskin that deals with constutional rights of students and it goes into detail about landmark cases.

Look up Tatro vs Irving ISD. I taught in Irving and later worked with the student. Not sure if it involved an amendment, but it went to the Supreme Court.

Thanks for correcting me. I got them screwed up. I got an A in the class but that was three semesters ago... my memory retention isn't what is used to be!

Constitutional law was my passion, Cindy. my teacher was a first amendment expert, but we covered quite a bit of other stuff too.

there were a whole series of cases in the 60's about whetehr students could wear anti-Vietnam protest slogans to school. we're still living with that issue -- what kind of dress code can students be compelled to follow vs. their first amendment rights. if you want I can fidn some cases on that.

Thanks so much everyone, I will be looking into those on Sunday.

I am focusing on Secondary Education and it must involve education. I am trying to find a case that many of the students may not know so I'm not lecturing on anything we have all done. I am familiar with Plessy v Ferguson but so is everyone else, we too learned it in the beginning.

If you have any more suggestions please post, I'm getting excited about this report!

Island Trees School district! the school district wanted to remove certain books from the library. http://www.firstamendmentschools.org/freedoms/case.aspx?id=41

After several of its members attended a conservative educational conference, a New York school board determined that nine books in a high school library, including Slaughter House Five by Kurt Vonnegut and Black Boy by Richard Wright, should be removed because they were inappropriate for young people. Several students and parents challenged the school board’s decision to remove these books from the library.
