My 8yo DD has a reading disability, she is in special ed and gets modifications in her regular classroom. She mentioned she's having trouble in computer class because the teacher will orally give a web address for the class to go to. She can't relate the words to letters and is getting frustrated.

What she needs are the web addresses written down (preferable typed) so she can just copy them. That way she'd be able to keep up, she can work the computer fine it's just the reading part she needs help with. I have put a few web addresses on her desktop so she could find them without typing it.

Should I go directly to the computer teacher or would it be best to address it with her regular teacher? She has an IEP but it addresses only her special ed class and regular classroom.

Make sure the computer teacher has a copy of the IEP and explain specifically what your DD needs...after all, the modifications should follow her to computer class.

Hey this is one I have a lot of expertise on....lol

First I taught Special Ed for 12 years, and have had plenty experience that way. I am now the computer teacher at my school, as I was getting burned out.

My suggestion.

First, talk directly with the computer teacher. In most cases she will have no clue of any modifications required. Remember she will see probably the entire school, and reading that many IEP's would be mind boggling. Bring with you a copy of the IEP for her, and explain what she needs and why.

Second, I would have any modifications like that be stated in the next IEP annual meeting. It does not have to refer to computers, but a modification that includes visual cues and aides can be used in all subjects and be enforced.

Third suggestion...always talk to the individual teachers. It makes them feel better if they don't feel you are talking about them behind their backs. Many will feel that way!!
JMHO...besides they are all there to help the children :)

hope this helps...If I can help in anyway let me know.

hugs
