Taxi to Atlantis

Where is the best place to take a taxi from port to Atlantis in Nassau. Been to the Bahamas a few times and feel like you get ganged up on by all the locals as soon as you go through the gates. I honestly don't even like getting off the boat in Nassau because of how rude the people are here, but my mom wants to go over to Atlantis.

What's the best/cheapest way to get there without having some local trick us into paying a fortune to get there?

There are a bunch of vans just inside the gates of the cruise terminal that take passengers to Atlantis for a flat $4 per person (plus tip at your discretion). They tend to wait until they're full, but that doesn't take long. They're not going to rip you off; they are making milk runs back and forth between Atlantis and the cruise terminal multiple times a day.

That's really the best way. You could instead take the water taxi, which costs essentially the same amount and also waits to fill up. But it's much larger than a van and can take 20 minutes to fill up.

You can also go get a smaller sedan cab. There are often a few outside the terminal or on Bay street, and the cost tends to be about the same. It's negotiable if you feel like haggling. Taxis will have "Taxi" in fancy lettering on the sides, a special license plate, and a meter (which they never seem to use).

Every other option like renting a car or hiring a private driver is complete overkill if all you want is to go to Atlantis. If you want to explore the island further, a private driver is handy.

Sounds like you should stay on the ship and not risk being tricked by some local.

We went right to the taxi stand and jumped in a van with other passengers. It was no problem. I hate the pushy aspect of the Nassu cab scene, too, but right at the port they are fine.

I have heard the same thing, but have never seen it that backed up. We haven't been at peak season, though. We went in late spring (well after spring break), early summer, and late summer. The bridge was not backed up significantly when we left on any of those occasions. It's usually a 15-20 minute ride, and it's hard to imagine it could take longer than 30-45 minutes. I'd ask the driver or one of the bell staff when you arrive when they think you should start heading back. Unless you're there at spring break or Christmas, an hour seems like overkill. Basically if the ship is going to sail at 5:30, with a 5:15 all aboard, leaving at 4:00 should be fine. You will most likely arrive before 4:30, and even if you don't you'll have 60 minutes of padding.

Just a thought and not sure if it is legal, it is only about a 2 mile walk. At a normal pace, that is only a 30 minute walk. If the bridge is backed up, a 30 minute walk is easy. Its a possibility if it is really backed up.
