my daughter worked writing articles for a magazine and as an assistant for one of her professors.

she earned $350 from the magazine and $250 from the professor.

neither sent her a 1099-MISC since neither was for over $600 and,

i'm guessing she still has to claim both as income but,

turbo tax is asking for the employer id # or social security number which,

we don't have since my daughter did not receive a 1099-MISC

- can anyone help? -

thanks

I'm a professional tax preparer whose done more than a few of those not having 1099=MISC's. I've never needed an employer ID or social security #. Lots of people do little jobs like that. Essentially. for the Schedule C-EZ (the form she'd use), her own social security number is sufficient as she's considered SELF employed. I just did one Friday for a guy whose side job was cutting lawns and cleaning up lawns. He was lucky if he knew the names of who paid him and there certainly weren't employer IDs. So as long as she has her own SS #, she should be OK.

Taxes can be so much fun! (NOT!) I was chugging along ready to e-file, when I noticed the company that paid me $58 as a movie extra put my name in as the employer on the W-2. They did put their EIN on it also, so I wasn't sure if the employer name as me was a typo, or if they were saying I was self employed (but then why did they send me a W-2?) I'll have to make some inquiries tomorrow!

Thank YOU! Simba's Mom, but Turbo Tax is asking if we received a 1099-MISC which the answer is no. So there is no place where we enter her income. Should I not use Turbo Tax and file the individual tax forms?

Thank you again!

There should be a place on the form for untaxed income or something like that-go to the form view vs the questions. I though though if it was under $500 you didn't have to claim it as income. I would ask on Turbo Tax help about where to put that and if you even need to claim it.

Th I though though if it was under $500 you didn't have to claim it as income.
All income is taxable, regardless of how little it is. You babysit your neighbors kids a couple times and get $100 that income is taxable.

I don't know about TT's personal edition. However on their professional edition if a client gives me income information without actually having a 1099-MISC I am able to enter it directly onto the Schedule C.
