Tatoos & Piercings

HOLY CRAP! Is that even human? And if so is it a boy or a girl? Sorry if this offends anyone but that is gross.

Here's my take - feel free to do whatever you want to yourself but society and the business world will judge you (just like how you're judged here on this board for many things). I have two tattoos - one on my front right hip (Mickey!) that only my wife and I guess guys in the locker room see. My other tat is an Icthus that is just above my right ankle (on the outside of my leg). I'm actually planning on getting a new tat on my chest in the next couple of weeks as a belated birthday treat. But I am able to "cover up" my ink for business purposes, although I've had clients comment on my ankle tat on golf outings. So far, though, I've not lost any business.

I used to post on another messageboard where this argument often came up. I have 3 tattoos and the last thing you could call me is trashy. I want more, too - I love tattoos. Thought about getting my eyebrow pierced, but I guess that wouldn't fly when I'm trying to get a new job.

I do not care for tattoo's personally. I have seen a few that look pretty nice and I have seen a few that people felt that they just HAD to get a tattoo, no thought went into getting a tat, they just wanted a tat and anything would do!

I have heard people say that getting tats are addicting and once you have one you want more, maybe, I don't know.

One problem about tats and piercing is that if you go out and get a hundred tats and piercings everywhere there is skin, then don't ask someone what they are looking at when they are looking at YOU! C'mon you knew people wear going to look when you did it.

I think it's addicting. When I got my last one, the guy said, "It's easy to stop at one, but when you have 2, you want more." I'm a masochist; I like the way it feels to get one, and I really like tattoos, but mine are so small that I don't think I'll ever be covered in them.

Not in the business world - I can't see visible piercings ever being embraced in business.

It's also why I'm not getting a tattoo on my inner wrist at the moment. I really want one, but I'm holding off until I find a new job.

What happened to getting to KNOW a person before you passed judgement on them?

:confused3

not as long as people are shallow and make appearance the first thing that matters.

I have piercings that are visible, and a tattoo that isn't. In no way do I think that makes me 'trash', and I know for certain that anyone who actually knows me would agree. I know that people probably do judge me unfairly from time to time.. I knew that when I got them, but I will not let the opinion of a few close-minded individuals dictate what I will and will not do. True trashiness has nothing to do with physical appearance, it comes from within.

And what about people who get piercings for religious reasons? I believe that it is Hindu's who pierce their noses, correct? Are they grouped into the 'trash' category as well?

I've read that at one point in history large-guaged ear piercings were a sign of wisdom. Apparently those days have passed :rotfl:

I am not talking for all people with tattoo's but the ones that I personally know that have alot of tattoos, including my DH, know that if people are looking at them its because people are looking at their artwork (tats) So I have never encountered a situation where someone that was tattooed got upset that someone was looking at them for their tattoo's.

I think the majority of the time its the perception of the non-tattooed of tattooed people that is the problem. Like with my DH - people are intimidated by him and they don;t even know him. The only thing I can think of is its because he has tattoo's and piercings - that is not a reason to be intimidated by a person. If we as a society could be more accepting of individuals for who they are inside instead of what is on the outside I think it would be a much better society!!

Both DH and I have tattoos - DH has one on his upper arm and one on his chest, I have one on my ankle and am soon to get one on my shoulder. DH's are usually covered in public, unless he is swimming, just because of their location, but mine is usually visible, even at my professional job. FWIW, the only time I have felt we were ever "judged" for them is through posts on this board. I have never had anyone treat me differently in real life. Maybe I only associate with those that don't judge a book by its cover, however.

Just think how boring the world would be if we were all the same!

DH has 7 and I have 1. Soon to be 2 if you saw my recent thread on the tink tat. I am a fan of the shows Miami Ink and Inked. Tat's have come so far that a good one is like wearing a piece of art from a true artist and the artists on those 2 shows are a great example of that.

Myst
(Who doesn't care if people that don't mean anything to her think she is "trashy" lol)

I do think that folks who think they are "expressing their individuality" (a common response when asked why they got a tatoo) are only kidding themselves. There's nothing "individual" about doing the same thing that 65 milion other people have done
But not every person has the same tatoo. I'm sure there's several people out there who has the same tatoo as others, but for the most part, tatoos are unique to the person.

For instance, I was thinking of getting a Tinker Bell one on either my ankle, or my arm, but I know a lot of my friends would never get Tinker Bell. They mostly have designs, or some complex graphic, that I would not get.

Whether or not a person has tattoos and piercings is their own business. I certainly don't think they should be excluded from public places because of it.

However, it also says something to me about their judgment or lack thereof.

I hope you don't feel judged by this thread. I started it to vent about the people who were doing the judging on other threads, and not to judge what is a personal choice.

Like I said in my last post, I'm thinking about getting a Tinker Bell tatoo.

If you actually believed to each their own and it was their own business then you wouldn't have followed with a statement about lack of judgement. Now how are you going to back that statement up? What makes you think people with piercings and tat's show a lack of judgment?

Personally, I think tattoos and excessive piercings look hideous. Genuinely awful. I don't think they are body art, I think they are body graffiti. I think it says something about one's judgment to disfigure one's body in a permanent manner like that.

That doesn't mean I think people should be barred from Disney or anywhere else. I also think that adult people should be free to get all the tattoos they want. There are lots of actions that don't show good judgment, but people ought to be able to do them. They don't hurt anyone else and the only lives they can affect is their own.

My niece is engaged to a fellow who is covered in tattoos and piercings. He has the most disgusting ear thing I have ever seen. I think it's called a grommit, but I'm not up on these things. He's a genuinely nice guy, but I think he has made some fairly stupid decisions. He may well think the same about me, and that's OK. Free country and all.
