We are thinking of going to Tarpon Springs when we visit Florida again next April. At first we thought of going on Easter Sunday for dinner but I am wondering If that's a good idea. Will stores be closed because of the holiday or do they stay open because it is a "touristy" area?

The only area of Tarpon Springs I would really consider "touristy" are the sponge docks which are really a very small area of the overall city. I lived not too far from there for a while but really can't recall if they were opened on Easter Sunday.

Hard call. While Tarpon is very touristy (the sponge docks area) it is a very heavily populated Greek community. I would think Easter Sunday would be a very important day for them.
If I think of it, when I am up there next I will ask. I go to Tarpon every couple of months.
My initial thought though is the restaurants would be open.

That's what I was wondering. Thanks.

I believe Greek Orthodox Easter is a different day than Christian Easter

I used to go to grade school in Tarpon Springs years ago! Wow, hard to believe it has tourists now.

Some years they're different, but in 2011 they'll both be on April 24th. I have a feeling that a lot of things will be closed.. just a guess, though. Hopefully not though, that would be a fun way to spend the day. I love Tarpon.. well, mostly just the Greek canolis at Hellas, haha, but the shops are fun, too! :)

***Sniff Sniff...STUPID ARMY! That is MY TOWN! I grew up there and just moved to Central TX a year and a half ago.

Most things are closed Easter Sunday in Tarpon, including the Sponge docks. It's not quite a large enough tourist destination for them to bring in the business that say...DISNEY can get. Most of the restaraunts will be open, but the hours will be different. Some open later, for bruch/lunch and others are only open for dinner.

Hope this helps and if you do get down there have some Chicken Souvlaki or Greek LoMein for me from Mr. Souvlakis!

I am SOOOOOOO missing home.....:guilty:

Oh Tarpon Springs! When we lived in Tampa we visited several times. I love it there! No trip is complete without a visit to the St. Michael Shrine on Hope Street.

Bumping up because I was at Tarpon today.

I asked one of the shop keepers and she said maybe a few of the stores would be open. but not many. Easter is huge in the Greek community. I asked about the restaurants and she said they would be open.
