Tarheel Tink- Saturday 12/9/00 Check out
Our final day- depression sets in. We have express check out. I checked the bill over and found an error. The previous day we had split the bill at the Ice Cream Social; we put ours on our room card and the others paid cash. The bill showed us paying half and then again paying for all of it. Luckily I found it before we left so I called the desk and they credited it. The credit did show up on my next statement.
We packed up the car and could just barely get everything in. Our housekeeper was delighted to take our floral display- still stunning after 6 days! We left Dixie Landings and drove to Downtown Disney Marketplace to do the shopping Mom had inquired about repeatedly. A very long line had formed outside of World of Disney for a holiday pin being released. After a breakfast at McDonalds, we hit the World of Disney and Mom found her remaining gifts including a great Seven Dwarfs shirt for herself. I found the fairy godmother pin and got two- one for myself and one to send to Julia. We went through the Christmas Shop and I got more plants to replug my dolphin topiary I had purchased in May.
We ate lunch at Rainforest Cafe using our Safari Club Card(and our 10 dollar off Safari Club coupon we got for joining the other day). Has anyone else seen the rack of ribs they serve?!! It looks like something you would see on the Flintstones! The man at the next table got it and we could not take our eyes off of it! Our meal was very good and we sat right under a very neat gorilla that Mom imitated on video- too cute! His Santa hat with leopard print tassel and trim was for sale in the gift shop- a must have for me! Earl bought some frog items for an exotic frog fancier he works with.
As we headed back to the car, we stopped at the Gourmet Pantry and bought some items to put in the cooler for our dinner on the road (deli sandwiches, Greek salad, pickles). A chocolate shake from GhiradelliâÂÂs was the final purchase before we get in the car and sadly leave WDW.
BUT- our excitement did not end there!
First- we had a "hidden mickey" of a speeding ticket on the way home. Mom and I were asleep so awoke to a screeching of brakes. It was a 3 car stop by a SC highway patrolman. He did looked a little bemused when he looked in our car at Mom in her Santa hat with Pooh ears, hopper pass and room key hanging around her neck and her WDW fanny pack still on surrounded by WDW shopping bags full to the brim. I had on my annual pass hanging around my neck along with my Snow White shirt, Earl in Eeyore shirt and an Eeyore beanie on the dashboard.
Upon our return home my mother was really tired and over the next few days did not feel better so went to her doctor and had some tests. We ended up with her in the emergency room and she was admitted into the hospital. Ultrasound found gallstones so surgery was planned but she primarily was having cardiac problems. (Imagine me writhing in guilt). If you can believe it, we just got her out of the hospital after a three week stay. Of course, on Christmas Day in the hospital, all were treated to the sight of Mom in the now famous Santa hat with Pooh ears!
During the same time, my oldest dog Bree (a retired champion Weimaraner) went into renal failure so was ill the same amount of time on IV fluids and numerous medications. She survived skinny as a rail so we are working on fattening her and Mom up right now!
Despite it all, Mom had a great time and loved all of it (except for Dinosaur!!!). She was hard pressed to choose favorites but Merrie and Julia chose MVMCP, Brown Derby's Oyster/Brie soup, Fantasmic and the dinner package seating, the Christmas parade, the ice cream sandwich from Sleepy Hollow, the cinnamon-sugar pecans from the wagon in Epcot, Osborne Family Lights, Rose and Crown restaurant, Animal Kingdom (gorillas and tigers antics), AK walking trails, Wilderness Lodge, and the rides at night (teacups, Jungle Cruise, Splash Mountain, Haunted Mansion).
Thank you to all who contribute to this site- we were able to do so much with all the hints and advice. If you were in the parks during this time and saw a wheelchair flying down an incline with the woman in the Pooh Santa hat giggling with her arms in the air, I apologize for our enthusiasm. My husband just could not stop himself from trying to scare her and she couldn't stop pretending she was doing the Splash Mountain "look, no hands!" poise as he flew her around! Another Disney addict is formed!
