I haven't read all the replies, but I'd never put Ethan Allen and Pottery Barn in the same category. I own both. My Ethan Allen furniture was quite expensive, but very high quality. The Pottery Barn is ok quality.
I did buy a high top bar table from Target for my basement, and my husband was very skeptical about it. I will say it's better quality than I expected it to be, esp. for the $400 (including 4 chairs) that it was. My three 9 year olds use it all the time and it's holding up well. Not daily use, but kid use.

not only can you get it at Target prices, but you can see how it really holds up over time. I love Craigslist for stuff like that. You can even post what you're looking for and the price you want to pay. We sold my DS Little Tikes Thomas train bed there because someone was looking for one for $125 and bought the solid maple low loft bed we were looking for in the same week off Craigslist for $100. Saved us over $1000.
