I'm going to buy two this week as gifts for fellow dis fans.

Is target the ONLY place with a small discount?

:)

I love wdw

Many grocery stores offer rewards too. Giant Eagle and Kroger give gas discounts. For GE its usually 20 cents off per gallon per $50.

Depending on where you live BJ's has them too, for about a 4% discount

Our Winn Dixie store has double fuel perks on gift cards, so while you do not get a discount on the card, you rack up some cash at the pump which is always great.

I went to Target today and signed up for the Target debit card so I could get the 5% off Disney GCs.

The cashier looked confused as to why it didn't work and she called her (line) manager over who said it doesn't work on any Gift Cards. I told her I knew it did, because I knew many people who bought them at a discount but didn't feel like arguing the point. The cashier the next lane over said it had worked for him in the past but he had a huge line and I had groceries in the car I didn't want to melt.

Next time should I go to the entertainment department to make it work? Just ask for a different line manager? How have you resolved this when you've run into this issue of them telling you you can't get 5% of GCs. I know I've read threads previously of other DISsers who have had this difficulty and overcome it.

I had the same issue last year and had to ask for the store mgr and then explain that they are not considered gift cards but rather entertainment cards and that they did qualify for the discount. He then brought me to the service desk and rang me up. It seems like you'll get some that do know & others that don't. This year, I'm planning to call ahead to the store mgr before I go in since I'm planning to use my red card and my extra 5% pharmacy rewards card to buy enough cards to pay of my upcoming Aug. trip. Saving 10% off of $3400 :thumbsup2

Thanks. Think I'll go to the Target closer to work and try there. So they do have to manually enter the 5% off for the debit card then? It doesn't come up automatically in the computer?

You will not see the 5% off until you scan your red card through. The system does not know you have that card until you are at the payment process. The inital bill is going to look like the total (without the 5% off) until you area almost done completing the transaction.

taaren- are you saying that after you swiped the card and paid it didn't take the 5% off?
Like the PP said it doesn't show up until you pay with the redcard- but if you paid and it didn't take it off that makes me curious.

For two weekends every December, Target sells $50 Disney Gift Cards for $38 to Target Debit/Credit Card holders and for $40 for everyone else.

So plan ahead to save big on Disney every December. 20-24% Discount.

Also, H-E-B Grocery Stores in Texas routinely sell them for 15-20% off. 2-3 times per year they have a 7-10 day sale. While the Target deal forces you to buy your Gift Cards in $50 increments, H-E-B can usually sell you them in larger amounts.

I signed up for the card, then she scanned all the DGCs, then she scanned my new Target debit card code from the receipt, and the 5% didn't come up ... I got the impression the cashier wasn't doing it right though since the guy in the next line over was trying to give her instructions. :confused3 The Target closest to my house it always feels like the cashiers I get are clueless.

I did not know this! Thanks for the heads up!!

As far as I know, there is very little the cards don't work for.

I personally have used them to pay for:
  • Dues for the Disney Vacation Club
  • Tickets at WDW
  • Restaurants within WDW
  • Spending money on the Disney Cruise Line
  • Spending money at Downtown Disney
  • To pay for hotel costs at WDW.

That should cover almost all of your needs! :thumbsup2

Our school doesn't do Scrip but my friends school does and the % goes towards their tuition. They get between 4-7% back on Disney cards. I also like Scrip better because I can get the cards in large denominations, not just the $25 or $50 at Target.

This may be a stupid question, but I have been interested in opening a Target debit card but don't understand how they work. Doesn't a debit card have to be linked to a checking account? I have only ever seen debit cards offered from banks :confused3

You bring a blank check and they use the information to link the Target Debit Card to your checking account.

Thanks. So the account is still with your bank........ I wonder how the Target debit card benefits Target. If it's that easy I have to do this. I spend so much money with Disney 5% helps!

Ooooo, thought of another possibly dumb question:) Let's say I am buying a $50 Disney card. Do they just deduct $47.50 from my checking, or is it some kind of cash back?
