Tamiflu question

My oldest was placed on Tamiflu Friday due to the flu. He vomited within an hour after the first two doses. He has had extreme nausea after dose 3 and 4. I know this is a side effect from the tablets as these were not part of his flu symptoms.

My question is does he have to take all 10 doses? His flu symptoms have improved dramatically. He still has a headache and is tired; however, he has been fever free for 24 hours and the body aches are gone. I hate to have to continue giving him the Tamiflu tablets since he is having such bad side effects.

Our pediatrician's office is closed today and tomorrow. I could page a doctor from the practice but thought I would ask here first.

If it were me, I would contact the pharmacists and see what he says about stopping the meds. I know that it is not good to stop antibiotics even if you feel better. I Googled "stopping Tamiflu early" and came up with this website. There are several others you might want to check.

I would not stop it unless the side effects were so adverse he couldn't function.

Tamiflu stops replication of the virus. It takes 5 days of meds to fully stop the replication. If you stop the Tamiflu, you risk the flu symptoms coming back with a vengeance. I would stop it if the side effects were really bad.

My son also started it on Friday (he is 14) and he had very bad stomach pains on Friday evening and all through Saturday. He seems better with it today and, sure enough, the insert says that the worst of the stomach pain is usually over in 2 days.

Did he take it with food? My dd had stomach problems with her first few doses so we made sure she had it with food. I don't know if it helped but the stomach problems stopped.

Thanks for the information and sharing your experience about your son. I figured it would be similar to taking an antibiotic. DH was the one to take him to the doctor prior to leaving for the weekend and did not ask anything about the medicine. We have no prior experience with Tamiflu. I must say I'm shocked with how quickly he is feeling better.

I will have him continue taking it.

Thanks for the help, and I hope your son is over his flu soon.

Yes, he did take it with food each time. At least he's not vomiting now.

I was on Tamiflu a few weeks ago for the flu too. OMG....that stuff was brutal to my stomach the first 3 days. I did nothing different but for some reason the 4th and 5th day I was okay w/ it.

People kept asking me if it helped...I couldn't answer it. I started Tamiflu within 24 hrs of having symptoms. I knew I was exposed to the flu, so as soon as the sore throat and body aches started I went to the doctors.

I think it must of though, because inspite of my positive flu test I never ran a fever and I was back to work after 4 days.

DS had dose 5 last night and dose 6 this morning - no stomach problems! :cool1:

Thanks again to all the responded.

I am glad it worked out for you. I will say that when my son was younger and got the flu, he was placed on Tamiflu. He puked his guts up (imagine violent projectile) with the first dose. I called our ped and he told me not to give it to him again. Same with Amantidine. They put it in our chart as an allergy. You still might want to check, just in case. Also, keep a close eye on him.

I had an allergic reaction to this medicine and the doctor said to just quit taking it.

But I would never hesitate to call the service for the doctor on call when I had a question about something like that.:)
