Hi Everyone, we posted a video on our blog of a walking talking Mickey Mouse appearing in a recent video at Walt Disney World. The video's promoting the 2012 Walt Disney World Marathon, but definitely proves the technology exists for a talking Mickey that could be used for meet & greets. Check it out via the link below.

DIS Unplugged: Video - Talking Mickey Mouse Appears in Walt Disney World Promo

What do you think? Do you want to see a talking Mickey Mouse meet and greet character?

Talking Mickey was in Disneyland's Toontown last year I believe (or within the last year). I'm not sure how long he was around though.

Sorry, but that's not an interactive talking Mickey Mouse based on new technology that can be used in Meet & Greets.

It's the same kind of Mickey that they use in the "Dream Along with Mickey" castle show. He's been around since 2009.

He could not talk and interact with everyday guests.

Talking Mickey shows up at about 1:00, give or take a few seconds. I wonder if they plan on just using the talking backpack tech for videos for the time being, or if he's going to start appearing in the parks.

Oh, that didn't occur to me. All Mickey has to do is mime talking and they add the voice in post production.

Definitely - pay no attention to his right hand

wow thats pretty neat! I'd like to see this added with other characters :)

I"m getting excited about the marathon now.

Definitely - pay no attention to his right hand

Wow, that's talent! Mickey is his own ventriloquist dummy! ;)

Wait until you see him climb up and sit on his own knee.
I don't get the "pay no attention to his right hand" line. Yes, his right hand is behind his back at the beginning of the video, and in some other places. However, it's clearly waving around free in many parts of the video for extended periods of time.

SPOILER ALERT:

The reason that hand is hidden much of the time is that "finger bends or flicks" of the right hand is how the "helper" controls the character's mouth and eye movements.

In stage shows (for which these articulated characters are designed) the audience is mostly at a distance and the finger flicks go unnoticed.

In close-up work (like your linked video) the finger motions would become obvious very quickly, so the helper hides that hand most of the time.

EDIT: I've located a brief area of the video where you can see the "finger bends" in action.
At about 1:18 in the posted clip, Mickey puts his right hand up on the host's left shoulder.
As Mickey says, "Tell 'em? Aww, come on, Pal. We've gotta SHOW 'em! Let's go, everybody!"
you can see Mickey's right-hand fingers flex in sync with his mouth movements.

Yes, this IS a very revealing "spoiler" for the magic, but you DID ask. ;)

.

I didn't think I would like it, but I love it! Looks like a lot of fun!
