Talk to the damn chef

Pete is so right about this !!!!

And not just for food allergies, but for special needs when it comes to food. My DBF is now on meds for high chloresteral and it's going to be challenging to control what he eats when we go to WDW this December. He doesn't like vegetables (corn is about it) and is very picky when it comes to eating salad...we plan to ask for the chef to help us out on what he can have for dinners

I agree we have two daughters with severe allergies and Disney is really the only place we can eat without bringing their own food

In general Disney is absolutely fantastic when it comes to allergies. Two of my family have a gluten allergy and Disney is one of the only places they can dine easily, almost like a normal person.

Having said that, there are some CMs and restaurants that seemingly did not get the memo. Our last trip to Le Cellier was a disaster - our server told them that they could only eat a plain steak with no sauce or sides. She refused to get the chef, after several times of asking, and made it crystal clear that we were a huge inconvenience being there. In the end we walked out without eating. This despite having had a reservation for months, and giving them advance notice of our dietary restrictions.

My point is that however good Disney is in general, you still have to be careful. Some servers (inside and outside of Disney) either wrongly think that they know everything (e.g. "there's no gluten in brown bread") or view it as a lifestyle choice or preference (on the same level as "I don't like mushrooms").

I realise that it sounds like a bit of a rant against Disney - it's really not! Once again, Disney are in general amazing when it comes to allergies. :thumbsup2

I totally agree that you still need to be careful. We always talk to the damn chef ;-)

In all of the years we've gone with food allergies we've always talked with the chef and have had amazing experiences

I see both Craig and Pete's points on this matter. I have tree nut allergies. However, it only causes me problems when nuts are plentiful within the food itself. Cross contamination is not an issue with me. I had such problems ordering what I wanted the last time I listed nut allergies on my reservations. Ohana refused to bring the pineapple bread to the table because it might be cross contaminated even though I told them my dbf would like it. Citricos fought me about vanilla bean gelato. I had to tell them over and over that it would be fine before they would bring it to me. I'm not allergic to vanilla beans!!!! As an adult, I also can manage my allergies with just a little information. Yes...the chef should speak to you if you request it and absolutely for severe allergies. However, for those of us that know what we can and can't have....just provide the info and let us make our own choices.
