DIS Dads Talk DVC with the Dis Dads

Dads of the DIS talk about life, bacon, Disney, bacon, kids, bacon, cars, bacon, family life, and lots of other fun stuff! And beer. And bacon.
I have some exciting news to share, I saw a 250 SSR property with Fidelity yesterday listed at $64. Dec UY 51 2013 points and 250 2014 points. We put an offer in at $60 with seller paying the 2014 dues. The seller countered with $60 and not paying the 2014 dues. Guess what? We accepted their counter offer!!! The paperwork has been started and hopefully we will be owners in a few months& just in time to borrow some of those 2014 points for our trip in September 2014!

I really appreciate all your guys knowledge and help. It has made my life easier and has helped me explain numerous questions to Melody. :thumbsup2

I'm sure I have more questions about banking, UY, and whatnot in the future.

So much for Melody and I not buying anything for each other for Christmas. :lmao::lmao:

Congrats. And I'm jealous. But mostly congrats.

Now the waiting begins....this is the hardest part! Good Luck! :thumbsup2

If I can have my points loaded by 2/21 that would be awesome since we are planning on using them 9/21-9/25. We are hoping to get into a BLT 1 BR.

BLT has been difficult to get at the 7 month window, but Sept is not a popular time. Also, we only do studios so I'm not really sure about the 1 BR category. So, this reply is not in anyway helpful.

I think I have a few things going for me.. September and a mid week booking- Sunday-Thursday

I've been reading the resort room threads where they show the rooms and views from each room. Can you request a certain room or room(s)? Also does DVC supply pack & plays if needed?

They have a pack n play thing in the closet, even in the studios. You would only need to request if it is missing. I think MS will let you make two requests - "high floor", "near elevator", etc. There is a BLT Thread that lists all the room numbers, where located, etc. I know some people will request a room # specifically. The problem is if that room is taken and no other request is listed, then there is not a category for you.

So the wait continues&.. Still haven't heard anything yet. We are on day 21. Hopefully we will hear something next week. We've already have planned 2 possibly 3 trips. After reading more about DVC I think I would of been better with a August UY opposed to December. But I guess it is a little late for that.

There is a 0% chance of traveling in May & June for me but we have traveled in October & November. So say we booked a trip in Nov and had to back out for whatever reason, what happens to the points? Would I still have 60 days to rebook and use them even if it went into the next UY?

We haven't ever canceled a trip but have moved dates before. I guess these should of been questions I asked before. :rolleyes1

FIXED Nate& Thank you! LOL

Last time I checked...these are the same months? :teacher:

December is a good UY. The travel months to avoid for that UY would be November, October, September, and August. We start school in August, so if it wasn't for an October Fall Break, we would not travel those months until the dds are out of school. You have a lot more school years. It does stink that you can't go in June, but there is always July.

And, it isn't like you can't go during those months. You just lose that flexibility in being able to cancel/bank points without issue. Worse case scenario is a place like David's rental that will try to get distressed points rented for you. There is also trip insurance, which I think you have to buy at the start of your UY, that may cover losing points. But, I really have not checked into that option, so I'm not for sure.

Norm, can you explain why certain months are better for UY? If I bought one in Dec, but always travel in Sept would that be a disadvantage?

I'm not Norm, but I've done some research……

You would be good with a August UY. That way if your plans changed and you had to cancel, you'd have time to either bank your points or use them before the following August.

Ok, so it is more about the flexibility of planning. Does have anything to do with the "window" for when you book? Like if I owned st SSR, but wanted to stay at Beach Club, how would an August UY effect that?

The UY doesn't effect that but your home resort (or where you own) does. If you own at SSR you can reserve SSR 11 months away from your reservation. If you wanted to stay at BCV you have to wait till you are 7 months to book.

Are any of you thinking of adding Poly when it is offered? DW said the oter day she would like to buy enough points to stay at least 2 nights.

I am thinking YES!!!! Don't even have to talk her into it. What do you guys think? The plans look really interesting.

This one is the most complicated. Your points are good for their UY. You can either use those points in that UY, or bank them forward. The problem is you have a deadline of when you can bank points.

Example. I have Sept UY. My banking deadline is the end of April. Let's say I book a trip for July. April 1, I find out I can't go, then I cancel the trip and bank the points forward to next UY.

If I book a trip for July and find out May 1 that I can't go, then I cannot bank those points forward because I missed the deadline. I would have to use those points by Aug 31 or I lose them.

I picked the Sept UY because I really don't want to go in the summer months. But, if we had to, then that offers the most flexibility with no kids in school.

But, if I have a June UY, then those last 4 months after banking window are May, April, Mar, & Feb. The only flexibility is Spring Break & Memorial weekend. It would be much more difficult to squeeze into those 2 weeks only.

Over the course of a 40 year contract, I imagine the needs of UY and travel times will change.

Just don't ask about holding points.

My favorite was the Contemporary, and I talked DW into adding on points at BLT. It is still my favorite resort, but we just recently sold the contract. We can still only afford to go to WDW once a year. Adding more points just made us go more often. So, I will hope to stay there one day, but no more DVC points unless i pick up a new career and a lot more money. My plan is to retire to FL in 12 more years.
