Just wanting to see how other people take money to Disney.

We are looking to take a certain amount of cash and not sure whether to take travellers cheques or credit card for the rest.

Do Disney hotels change travellers cheques?

We did like the idea of the american express card with Thomas Cook but the offer has ended!

Yes Disney hotels do change travellers cheques. Certainly they have changed mine but I always change fairly small amounts at one time.

I tend to take some cash, some TCs and my credit card for other purchases :)

US$ Traveller's Cheques are used like cash in the US no need to change them anywhere, as they are accepted at 99.9% of places, the only exception maybe the drinks carts around the parks. You get your change back in US$ as well so even easier. I like to take a bit of cash for arriving at the airport and the rest of the daily budget is in TC's and the CC is used for any extras :teeth:

Claire ;)

On our last trip we had about 2/3 of our money put on the American Express Travellers card (which we will use again) and the other 1/3 was in cash. We also took a credit card for an emergency :)

We usually take our money in a mixture of TCs and cash. This year, we have got the TC card (incidentally, although the Thomas Cook offer has finished, American Express are still offering $75 free if you load a card with $1000 - not quite as good as the Thomas Cook offer but still a good deal). We have got $2250 on the TC card and will probably take about $1400 in cash. We will also be taking the credit card for emergencies ;)

Try to carry as little cash as possible at all times. I heard of two separate instances last month of tourists leaving their backpacks behind after they get off a ride or after they eat at a restaurant and going back to get it and it being gone. One lady had over $2000.00 American Dollars in it and it basically ruined their vacation. I remember last summer a honeymooning couple lost their entire vacation fund and had to shorten their holiday by a week.
Traveler's checks are accepted EVERYWHERE, so there is no problem with carrying them instead of cash. The only problem is you have to carry proper I.D. for when you cash them.

We took most of our money as TCs, with some cash for arrival and a CC just in case.

As has been said, pretty much everywhere took TCs without any bother and, in fact, maybe 50% of the places didn't even ask for ID...certainly nowhere on Disney asked. :confused3

I work at Disney part time and they train us to definately check I.D. with TCs.

Really!

I don't doubt you, mom but we spent TCs in various shops all over Disney and also counter and buffet catering and not once did I have to show ID.

Mind you, come to think of it, every time I went to pay with a TC, I had my passport in my hand...maybe because I was willing to hand it over without be asked, they thought I was OK and didn't bother checking. :confused3

That could be it, but alot of CMs are kinda lazy when it comes to checking, so I don't doubt you. I would just bring it with you just in case. You just never know...

i stopped using travelers cheques years ago......i prefer cash...
we use cash and credit cards....since we stay onsite, we put just about everything onto the key card, which we pay by credit card....

the cash is mainly for the other cities we visit when we're in the states....

The trouble with taking a vast amount of cash is most travel insurance policies only cover about £250 worth of cash if stolen/lost! At least with TC's and CC's you are covered shoudl they get lost or stolen.

Claire ;)

We take a couple of hundres dollars or so in cash and charge the rest to our room and settle with a Cc - which we also use for any purchases elsewhere.

The money stays in our a/c a bit longer earning interest, as we don't need to pay the bill for another month - makes sense to us.

Cash only for us, probably better with a combination of TC and Dollars.
Just cannot be bothered with TCs anymore though, find cash just easier to use.

We took mainly TCs and cash. When out we tried to take mainly TCs with a little cash.

In the parks when we used TCs we were never asked for any form of ID, even when I bought a $10 item with a $100 TC! (I wanted the cash :) ).

Onlt used out CC at the Florida Mall and a couple of times at DTD (we were asked for photo ID when using our CC most of the time!).

Ditto here. I got a little bothered when people kept asking me for ID when I tried to buy goods using credit card. TC are just not for me. Should I loose my money, I have 4 credit cards to choose from.

And with cash you know how much you're spending. My first trip was mainly CC, which was great until I got home with a three page bill :teeth:

To be honest I have been asked for ID more times when using my CC than I have when using TC's!

I think Thomsons still have the American Express Travellers cheque card offer of a free $750 if you buy $1000 :thumbsup2
