Taking toy in carryon

We leave for DW tomorrow!!!!! DS 16 who is quite delayed cognitively has some favorite toys that he does best if they're with him most of the time. One is an elongated gel filled tube that has dolphins in it. There's no way to open it short of cutting it. Am I foolish to want to have this in his carryon? He likely won't want it on the plane as I hope to get him to sleep most of the trip (we're flying over night from Seattle) but I know he'd like to have it for on his tray before and after the flight. What do you think? Will I have trouble with it at security? Thanks,

I think I know what you mean - it's sort of a tube that "rolls" on itself?

My guess is that if it doesn't fit in your baggie (and if it's what I'm thinking of it is more than 3oz and won't fit), then you will have trouble bringing it on board. It sounds like something he would be upset to have confiscated (i.e. thrown out), so I don't think that I'd risk it.

You will not be allowed to bring that item in a carryon since it contains liquid. Since it does not have the volume printed on it the TSA will tell you to check it or trash it even if it fits in a zip lock bag.

I would say not to bring it on carry on. They are pretty strict on that liquid/gel stuff. You may want to check at baggage check in and ask, and if you need to stick in the luggage then.

Except that the airline doesn't make the 3-1-1 rules - so an airline check-in agent cannot tell you if it will get through security or not.

Unfortunately it won't be allowed, there are 3 oz restrictions on liquids and gels - even snow globes have to go in checked bags. There are exceptions but this won't qualify.

I would have an alternate, non liquid favorite for him and pack the squishy toy in your checked bags (with lots of protection).

All the details can be found at the TSA website.

Thanks for the replies. I was sort of thinking along the same lines. I do have another toy that should give him the same sort of effect (he likes to have it under his hands when he plays with his beads) that doesn't have gel. The dolphin tube will go in his luggage.

Personal expereince.

My cousin's daughter had a Ariel toy with something like this. TSA would not allow her to carry it on. (She's 4 and really cute and that card didn't work...) Cousin had to go get Delta to help her deal with this... I understand that getting toy into checked luggage was a nightmare and this was at teeny tiny airport!

we flew home from MCO last week. When we were going through security we got in trouble 'cause we forgot to take out the roll of pennies, and we should have known to do that. So, they had to dig through the bag and find them, and everything was ok.

Then, we get on the plane and my son goes into his backpack. In the front pocket we had put 3 Capri Sun's earlier in the trip that we forgotton about. They went through security just fine. :confused3

Yeah you got to love the TSA "protection":lmao:

In my purse is a tube of hand lotion. It's been there for about three years (not the same tube, but there is ALWAYS one there) It's never made the plastic baggie. IF it ever gets found I plan to write the TSA a letter congratulating the agent who found it. That may NEVER happen!

A toy containing liquid or gel should not be permitted to be carried past security unless it can fit in your carryon liquid baggie.

I have even heard stories that people were not permitted to bring snowglobes through security.

it might get past, but it might not. If you must bring that particular toy, bring it in checked luggage.
