Taking kids out of school for trip

I just have a problem with schools thinking its ok to dictate to students and their families when and how their children can be absent. I can understand having restrictions for people whose children are absent alot, and for frivolous reasons like they overslept or something. However, all of you posters, who have or will be taking your kids out soon don't appear to be the type of people with a blatant disregard for their child's education. I plan on taking my daughter out for five days in November and if they have a problem with it tough. When I was in school, my parents NEVER had to explain where we were going or why. They would just let the school know a few days ahead of time when and for how long we would be absent. Sorry about the rant...Just wanted to get that off my chest. To the OP I hope you have a terrific time!!!!!!!

I would refuse to do it myself That is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard of! Have a wonderful trip!

We live in Indiana. My daughters teach thought it was absolutly wonderful that we were taking our daughter on vacation.

I sent a note home a week before our trip reminding the teacher and asked for homework to be sent home early and I got a note that said NO HOMEWORK- just have a great trip.

This was our 3rd trip and our 3rd time to take daughter out of school. Each year the teachers are excited for us!

I am a teacher and I get very sick of hearing about the "bad parents" that take their children out of school for trips. These are times that you bond with your child and they learn from all the experiences that you have. They will remember this trip forever! Not all of us can afford the high cost of going in the summer ( or want to go in the summer). I say go for it! I also would not unenroll my child. What did they say they would do? They just don't want the absence number to go up. Go and have fun!

Thank you so much for all your replies! I sent e-mails to my state representative, the mayor of my city as well as been in touch with the superintant of schools. Their rationale was as I suspected; Parents who have little value for their children's education are bringing down our AYP percentages and I got stuck in the crossfire, where we are now into the 100th day of the school year. Yeah it stinks having to do all this extra running around, I was completely assured that both of my kids will be back in their same classroom when they return after school vacation. That was probably my biggest concern. As far as the make up work I spoke with the the teachers and both said if you get to it , fine but don't stress about it. Knowing my kids(big-time overachievers and very much not like me) they'll be doing it anyway! Oh well thanks again! Mother nature has thrown us a wrench and we have to get out of here today inorder to beat the Nor'easter that's on its way! I'll say Hi to Mickey and friends for all Of YOU!!!!!

My question would be...If you have to un-enroll them how would they even have home work? They were not part of the school let alone the class?

Better to withdraw and re-enroll than to be prosecuted for truancy violations!

DS is in 4th grade. We went to WDW in October and he missed 4 days. District handbook says NO vacations, absences will be unexcused, missed assignments will be zeros, and child may lose credit for the entire semester for excessive (more than 3) unexcused days. Great. School sends home a letter saying you can request vacation permission from the principal, but unless it represents an extraordinary educational opportunity it will be denied. In the meantime another mom told me she withdrew and re-enrolled her son to avoid all the politics. Teacher told me to write a note saying DS was sick and get on with it.

We get back from WDW, send a note saying he was sick. Get a letter from the district listing four unexcused absences and threatening me with prosecution. Brilliant. I call the registrar and she says we need a DOCTOR'S NOTE! I tell her 1)the district handbook doesn't say that and 2) DS didn't see the doctor because he wasn't THAT sick! Nope. They wouldn't resubmit the days to the district as excused. Fine.

DS still got all A's and B's for the marking period and I have managed to stay out of jail, but we won't do it again. OK, we will do it again, but not for four days.
