My father in law is a raacal for taking his own bacon sausage etc on his holidays. He has just asked me if he can take some to America, is this possible or not. I remember in 2002, all meat was banned due to the old Mad cow. I hope he can, he has bought a freezer bag full of bacon and sausage.

Hello,

Even towards the end of your plane journey the cabin crew take ALL food from you and bin it! You may be able to 'smuggle' a packet of crisps past them but all meat/fruit/veg etc is banned and as above you could/probably would be fined.

The US Department of Agriculture is really hot on this. You have to declare on the Customs Declaration (the white form you fill out before you land) that you are not carrying certain products, including meat. If you are caught illegally importing meat you are in a lot of trouble. I've just returned from Orlando (flying in to Tampa) and we all had to present our baggage to a sniffer dog on arrival - no idea whether the dog was trained for drugs or anything else, but I'm sure he would have noticed if I had a couple of pounds of best British Bangers!

You really should ensure your father-in-law understands the seriousness of this.

Regards

Rob

the sniffer dogs for this are at orlando airport too..
we had one year the dogs were sniffing everybodys cases whilst we were going through immigration.. i would not take any bacon or sausages if i were you...
why doesnt he just try the bacon and sausages on offer there ???

I did forget I had a couple of virgins sandwiches and scones in my bag and they came to the resort with us. I had them for tea!!! as I was too tired to get to the food court!!

Really though you should declare any meat products. I remember a middle aged brit couple having their Marks and sparks tinned stew confiscated at MCO. The airport people were baffled as to what it was! I betcha they had it for dinner.;)

The only thing I would be tempted to take to the USA is some curry powder or sauce !!!!

Thanks for the replies.

The reasson he won't get them there is because he is set in his ways and likes his bacon.

I have jusy told him he cant take them, and he said I knew we should have gone to Benidrom.

LOL

He will come round after a couple of breaskfast tomorrow and friday.

the dogs they use are trained to sniff out food
