When we were on our last cruise I remember that we couldn't take food ashore. Does anyone know if this means we can't take anything edible ashore. How about prepackaged sweets, biscuits or crisps

Sealed, commercially packaged food is fine to take ashore. I threw some granola bars in my bag for snacks while off the ship.

In most ports, anything pre-packaged and still sealed is fine to take ashore. However, there are a few ports that don't allow anything due to that country's agricultural and food import laws; it will be noted on the Navigator and announced if this is true at one of your port stops.

Enjoy your cruise!

On the Norway cruise it was actually ok to take any food off the ship into Norway. No need for it to be prepackaged. I could imagine that for the Med cruises it is the same.

I would suggest checking with guest services before taking any food or beverage products off of the ship. This is just to protect yourself as you don't want to get into a legal situation in a foreign port over a granola bar. That is an extreme example, but many countries, including the United States, take the importation of food very seriously. I would also not assume that because it's acceptable to take food off in one port on a cruise, that it would be acceptable to take food off in other ports.

I tend to fly Virgin Atlantic when I travel from the states to the UK. Several years ago I was speaking with one of the stewards on the flight about the fruit that they offered during the flight from the UK. They loaded the oranges onto the plane in Orlando. The aircraft and flew from Orlando to London Gatwick, offloaded passengers, uploaded new passengers, and then returned to Orlando. At no time did that fruit leave the aircraft. But, on return to Orlando the uneaten fruit was inventoried, bagged and sent to be incinerated. Because the oranges had left country, despite the fact that they were Florida grown oranges, they could not be brought back in.

I believe Crustables from room service can be requested to be sealed and I think potato chips in bags are free on Castaway and possibly at the fast food places maybe but hopefully someone will confirm. Oh and cereal obviously

There are bags of chips available on the ships in a few places. I've seen them around maters grill (one of those windows) and at the bar on 12 (or 13) forward (don't remember the name) - which I think is kind of an odd place to have bags of potato chips.
