I am going to have a lot of time in the airport traveling to a weekend crop this next week. I would love to bring my small Fiskars Trimmer in my carry on to start trimming my photos. This is the type of trimmer with the small orange blade holder and the acutal blade is teeny tiny, and slides back and forth on the track. I checked the TSA site and I can take scissors with a blade smaller than 4 inches, but all razor blades are prohibited. Not sure if this would really count as a razor blade? It is certainly less dangerous than any small scissors I own!

I have an old blade I can put in the trimmer and use, and if I have to throw it away to get through security I won't mind, but I don't want to cause trouble.

Has anyone traveled with this type of trimmer in their carry on luggage?

I've only checked my trimmers in my luggage, never did carry on. Sorry

It will probably depend how much of a "Jobsworth" you get on check-in. They may no even notice it - I accidentally took through a pair of folding scissors once (the sort you get in a cracker) as I forgot they were in the bottom of one of my handbag pockets. Is there a number you could call? Otherwise I'd use the old blade just in case.

I agree with MazdaUK -- my son (11 at the time) had a pocketknife in his backpack (forgot to take it out after going to Boy Scout camp) -- made it through going and returning security checks -- he & I discovered it when were waiting at the gate to board the plane home!

IMHO, take the risk -- it is such a teeny tiny blade. I'd even carry a spare in your pocket and walk on through the machine. Microscissors on the other hand . . . . I'm not even bold enough to try that!!

Have a great trip,
Brenda

I think things are a bit calmer now - no more stories of poeple being asked to check in GI Joe's because "they've got guns in the packet":rolleyes1:lmao:

My sister kept getting stopped going through the scanner once - we couldn't work out what was setting it off:confused3 Turned out to be one of those solid perfumes in a metal case:rotfl2: (like a lipstick)

When I traveled in Sept, I was surprised to learn that I could take scissors with me in my carry-on - -the blade had to be no more than 3 inches long. I had no problems, no questions etc. In Phila, I put them out in plain sight in the box that goes on the conveyor belt. In Orlando, I forgot to take them out of my purse, but it was still fine. I was able to cut a whole bunch of paper piecings while I waited at the airports.

I would suggest that you look into it. It seems like it would be okay now.

ANother idea -- how much would it cost to replace? Or can you get a cheap one? Take it and if they say no, just throw it out.

Hi lts -- can't imagine you'd have trouble with the trimmer (except that it's with photos that I have trouble using old blades). (glad you're scrapping again; I remember a time when you weren't doing very much! -- I've gotten back into it too).

p.s. (not to change the thread -- but where ya goin' to a crop -- I've been trying to find one to go to. Have you gone to the WDW SDV? Am thinking about doing that next year).

I knew you could take small scissors. I have an old blade carriage that I just replaced so I am thinking I will just take that one. I have new ones I can put in my suitcase. If I have to throw it away then that if fine.

Hi!!! :wave2: I have been scrapping quite a bit! I have a full scrapbook room with a TV and my laptop set up. My first Disney album is almost done.

I am scrapping at a retreat I used to go to every year when I lived near the Tenn. border. It is held at a Youth Camp in the Smokey Mountains near Pigeon Forge. I flew back the first year after I moved away but haven't been back for about 4 years. They have done it for quite a few years but I am not sure if they will do it again next year. I wasn't supposed to go, but 2 weeks ago my friends were begging me to come, and the organizer said that this may be the last year they do it. I found a great airfare and decided what the heck! I haven't done the SDV ones because they are just soooooo expensive. And if I am in WDW I want to be making the memories, not scrapping them! SDV has a crop here but it is still just so expensive, even to go for the day.

I can't remember how far you are from Pigeon Forge but if they do this crop again next year maybe you can come up also (and bring friends-- attendance is down!)! Heck if you can be there this weekend you are welcome to come!

I live really close to Pigeon Forge, what the name of the company? Sounds like it would be fun.

It is a ton of fun. It is not run by any company. There is a Yahoo Croup for Scrapbookers in TN and this crop has been organized by 2 of the members for the last 10+ years. It has been open to members of the group and their friends. We actually have some very talented Scrapbookers that attend/ have attended--some are well known in the scrapbook industry. My brush with SB celebrity is that Rebecca Sower is good friends with one of the organizers and sometimes comes for a day or so. Rebecca has worked with several companies and has had her own lines of paper and embellishments. Several other have worked with some of the big companies in the industry--I even had an idea of mine scraplifted by one of the organizers and featured on a Scrapbooking TV show! We used to get TONS of freebies. They would have boxes and boxes of papers and embellishments that they companies would give them. In fact I would say that at least 1/2 of my patterned paper has come from these. I am not sure if that is still happening. I haven't been in several years and I am not sure any of them are still workign with the companies.

When the crop first started we had a waiting list a mile long. But for some reason attendance has dropped of drastically and this year there are only about 20 going instead of the max of about 75-100. But the activity on the Yahoogroup has also gone way down. I suspect that it is because when the group started there weren't a whole lot of resources for Scrapbookers online. Two Peas and many of those other sites hadn't started so this was our only way of connecting and networking with others. But now that message boards like this are so popular, the need for the smaller yahoogroup has dwindled greatly. This is why the organizers are saying they may not do it again next year. It really is more fun when the numbers are a bit bigger. We would have lots of demos and games.

One thing that is so wonderful is the cost. It is $150 for the entire thing--Thursday at 3pm until Sunday at 1:00. That includes all meals during that time. Everyone brings snacks to share, we do swaps and gift exchange games and it is in the mountains where the view is spectacular! The only downside is that it is at a Youth Camp, so the accomodations are not 4 star. In fact I am not sure they are even 1 star! We sleep in the bunk houses the kids use--bunk beds, thin mattresses and about 20 women to a room at the max. The shower stalls are barely big enough for my plus size self to squeeze into. ;) But you know that is actually part of the fun. We all have jobs assigned to help out and everyone pitches in to help with cooking and cleaning and we just laugh and have a great time. I think at my max I have gotten about 10 pages done during a 3 day crop becuase there is just too much other stuff to do!

Maybe if I can get enough interest from other in the area we can get people from here to join in next year and we can keep it going. I used to live 2 hours away and it was a great drive but I moved and now have to fly back. I used to bring the entire back of my mini van FULL of stuff, but now I am limited to what I can put in one suitcase (under 50 pounds!) and my carry on.

I will talk to the organizers and see if they want to try to get some more interest for next year. They make absolutely zero profit--the cost just covers the use of the camp and the food and supplies. So they only do this for the absolute fun we have of getting together every year.

Update on bringing a Trimmer with the small blade--it went through security going and coming back with no problems. Not even a batted eyelash. Both times I was in small airports with noone else going through security so I am thinking they have even more time to really look at what they are seeing on the scanner.

Welcome back lts -- glad it worked okay and hope you had a wonderful time. Did you get lots of layouts done? (posting photos of them?). Did it sound like they might meet again next year? I'm only a couple of hours away from PF/G'burg, but on short notice couldn't bomb over there for this one (leaving tomorrow for Florida -- Everglades/Key West, then WDW).

I was just thinking about you this morning, wondering how everything went. Thanks for the update, I'm travelling next summer w/scrap stuff and now feel a little more comfortable knowing what will pass security.

Take care,
Brenda
