Takin' on the jellies, SWEEEET!

The Monterey Bay Aquarium is in Monterey, CA. I haven't been there in sooooo long. I think the last time I was there, there were 2 otters mating. :lovestruc

Nooo thats where I went haha. Is the Aquarium of the Pacific different from the Monterey Bay Aquarium ? Or is it the same thing ?

The Monterey bay Aquarium is where I took my pics :)

OH, lol. I misunderstood you. :flower3: The Aquairum of the Pacific is in Long Beach then. A lot newer than Monterey's. They have jellies there too! So much for me reading your orig. post and I was the first one to respond! :p I was just too distracted by the purdy pics.

Nikon D40, making a mental note so I ask for that for Christmas...lol

Long Beach huh ? HMM. Maybe I can convince family to make a trip haha. I doubt it though :) Thanks for the info !

This is a little OT from DL, but I went to the Monterey Bay Aquarium and had an awesome time ! The whole time all I could think of is Finding Nemo :) I brought my trusty Nikon with me to "take on the jellies!" Sorry if this is image heavy, I had a great time and wanted to share since its summerish and we're nearing the end of it :)

I always tell you that you take GREAT pictures! Now see? Everyone else agrees! Have you thought about taking photography up as a living? You do well with people, plants, Disney and jellyfish, so I think you could get work!!;) You could always get a job as one of the Disney PhotoPass photographers, although you would be limited to just Disney locations, but that would be great fun for you, I bet! And I am serious, Wazowski - I think you should look into that!

Thanks so much Sherry ! I'm taking an actual photography class for the first time, so we'll see what happens. It would be amazing to do that for a living ! Though I guess I'd probably miss painting and makeup a lot too HAHA! Me NOT sticking to one art is my big kryptonite. I always go from one art form to another. I'll probably leave that camera alone until October when we go to Disneyland and pick up some other craft. If its not photography its painting, drawing, graphic design, makeup, sewing, jewelry, scrapbooking, shirt making, etc. It just goes on and on. Thanks though for the amazing compliment !

It seems to be that truly creative, talented people are adept in a bunch of different areas. Some musicians I know also draw and write and design thing. And you do a bunch of different things, too. But there is no rule book that says you have to do just one thing. You could pursue photography and also paint and do make-up, graphic design, etc. Would you ever be interested in taking a job at DLR as a Photographer? It could be a nightmare or a dream come true. Or would that completely kill your love of Disney after while and make you hate people?! I have a feeling that you would be great with people, and great at taking pictures and you would get to be at Disney all the time. Anyway, you definitely have talent - as good as your camera may be, it is your 'eye' that is behind the images. You should clearly do something professionally with that. Your photog class will help you fine tune your talent, but you already have it to begin with.

Just like Michael Phelps - he may be able to fine tune his athletic abilities and swimming skills with training and being coached and all that, but he has natural abilities that transcend all of that.

Thanks so much Sherry. It would be a dream to work for Disney, but at the same time, I've read (as I'm sure you have) that once you work there you begin to see the politics of the job (just like at any other place) and it starts to wear down on that magical feeling you get when working there. I think if I were to take photographs, I'd LOVE to do it for their travel company and just take awesome images of people having a great time at their various spots to vacation. That would be a dream !!!! Who knows, one day we'll both be working for them and 'live happily ever after' haha !!!

I have heard that some Cast Members get very disillusioned with Disneyland after seeing the inner workings of it, BUT I have also heard of some people who worked at DLR and LOVED it and said they would go back to do it again! I think it really just depends on the person and exactly where you are in the parks. One of my uncles used to work in the Magic Shop there and he loved it! Some folks would want to keep it as that magical place, and to work there - actually IN the parks - may spoil it, but for others it would be a dream come true! I think it would be okay to do it in increments - you know, a summer here, a fall season there, a few months at a time. You may be able to work with the WDTC at some point, although I imagine the way it works is that they start you at one rung of the ladder - and that is where the Photopass or other park photographers may come in - and then work you up to the more 'official' photography jobs.

Hopefully, we will both be working for Disney one day - you could do it in a lot of different creative capacities that I think would be easy for you, not just photography!

Oh really ? The magic shop ? I've always loved that store. Its so quirky and interesting. I bet he had an amazing time ! I agree with you, if it was done in increments it would probably be fun. I had a friend who was a character and she did it in the summers. She said it was the perfect amount of time because by the end of the summer she'd start to get irritated with the place, and then went back to visit as a guest and fell in love with the place all over again.

Ahhh....the character jobs. That is one thing I would NOT do for Disneyland! I hate heat anyway - whatever the 'bah humbug' equivalent is for summer, that is me! (Love Christmas, hate hot weather!) So to get me out in the peak fo summer wearing a heavy, furry costume with a head that weighs more than a small child, would take a miracle OR a LOT of money!!! I could maybe handle the photgraphy thing in the heat, but not the costumes!!! I would hate people, hate Disney, hate life... I would be miserable!

You know, some of the Disney employees are very dedicated and so many of them truly love to interact with people, I think. Last week, I called Reservations to ask something about my October booking at PPH. This very friendly CM named Cathy was helping me and we began chatting, as many of them will do. That is when you start finding out all the best tips, when you get the Reservations or WDTC CM's to converse with you. In any case, I was talking to her and she happened to mention in passing that her husband died 6 weeks ago, and as a result of that, and the ensuing financial hardship, she was being asked to leave her apartment or rented house by the landlord. She is basically being evicted. And this was a lady who was chipper and chatty and talkative as could be. I couldn't believe she was going through all of that and was still being nice to ME. She was fondly recalling what her husband liked to do when he came to Disneyland - the routine he had in the parks - and how she sometimes likes to do the same things just to help her think of him and feel closer to him.

I told her that she is an inspiration to everyone - just the fact that she can get up in the morning after such a horrible thing happened and is still happening, and be friendly, helpful, engaging. It just boggled my mind. This lady said that she was so grateful to have her job at Disney because it has helped her get through this very rough time. She says she has a great supervisor and great co-workers, and everyone has been a very strong source of support for her. She has asked for more hours at work because working hard helps her get her mind off of things, and she loves talking to people. She said that helping other people to make their trips special is part of what helps her get through her grief. So Disney is helping her cope, basically.

Anyway, I just thought she was remarkable and amazing. And I don't know if she works out 'on the front lines' in Reservations - like at the hotel desks - but I would love to meet her when I am there and tell her in person what a special lady she is!

I really do love how wonderful the CMs are for customer service. Throughout the years we have encountered wonderful people at DLR just willing to help people in any way possible. I especially love making reservations. They're amazing ! I would love to meet her too if she was that great !

Yes, they do go above and beyond the call of duty! I think many of them probably have hardships like what this one CM was going through, but not only do they love Disney and like to help make people's trips special, but it helps them deal with rough times to be able to interact with guests and talk to them. You really have to LOVE people (and Disney) to either be out in the parks dealing with thousands of them on a daily basis, or on the phone, answering tons of stupid questions from obnoxious callers (and you know some of them are obnoxious!).

But I think, because we have all discussed on this board before about how being at Disneyland makes us feel and helps cheer us up, etc., it is cool to know that it is also helping the Cast Members (or at least one of them) get through their own rough times!
